Toronto Maple Leafs History

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cup Championships and seven division championships, with more than 60 former players, coaches and executives in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Maple Leafs were one of the NHL's founding teams in 1917. They originally were known as the Arenas and then the St. Patricks before taking their current name in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought the franchise.

The team won two Stanley Cup Championships in the NHL's first five years and returned to the finals in 1932 behind the "Kid Line" of eventual Hall of Famers Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau, and Busher Jackson. In 1942, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the first of five Stanley Cup Championships under coach Hap Day. The addition the following year of center Ted Kennedy helped the Leafs maintain their dominance, and resulted in another title in 1951.

The Leafs won three Stanley Cup Championships in a row starting in 1962, and another in the 1966-1967 season, thanks to a roster brimming with players who would end up in the Hall of Fame: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Allan Stanley, Bob Pulford, and Frank Mahovlich.

The team returned to the conference finals in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, then again in 1998-1999—the latter trip powered by eventual franchise scoring leader Mats Sundin. The Maple Leafs have appeared in the Playoffs every year consecutively since 2017. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the Playoffs a total of 74 times to date.

  • leafs now have points in 4 consecutive games! lol

by TheBraak on 2009-11-04Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I was not told that the seats I purchased were "standing room only" seats......this was a little frustrating, considering I drove quite some distance to see the game...and trying to watch the game underneath the media both was difficult. I would never recommend the "seats" we were given to anyone. It was cool to be in the arena, however, but actual seats would have been much better. That was the first time i have ever been in the ACC for a leafs game to support the buds, and I will be back for sure...I will just remember which "seats" to not purchase......

  • The Leafs competed.

by DisappointedJP on 2009-11-04Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

I bought these tickets for my nephews birthday. He and I went. The (obstucted seating) OBSTRUCTION was a WALL, so you couldn't see all of the game. Not going to buy these tickets again, not even for free. If i'm spending my hard earned money, I want to be able to see everything. The game was good but the seats SUCK!

  • Great, the Lightning won

by sunbunny on 2009-11-04Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The game was exciting and in overtime my team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, won. The Leafs are going down the drain!!! Very appropriate for the Air Canada Centre to give out crying towels. They need it!!!

  • depressing

    by fan41 on 2009-10-20Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

Pathetic they tried hard but lack of talent was evident. Need goldtending? $225 dollar ticket awesome view terrible game if I didnt drive two hours to get there.... I wouldve left early like all the regulars were doing. There was a cool fight though later

Although the Leafs lost the total experience was great!! The fans, as usual, were rockin as was the atmosphere in the ACC. The employees were all great and very helpful. However, the Toronto Star lady outside our entrance was super pushy and annoying as she constantly battered people while trying to get them to invest in the Toronto Star on a daily basis. I know she has a job to do but come on when you're attacking the same people everytime they go in and out of the entrance to get a beer or use the washrooms it becomes overly annoying. Other than that we definitely would go again. One suggestion, maybe they should try lowering the ticket prices so more people could come down and enjoy the total experience. Even for the blue section where we were it was way pricey and probably most people wouldn't even think of spending the money we did on tickets. Overall it was a great evening!!

  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by BIGHOCKEYFANMAN on 2009-10-18Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

The product the Leafs are putting on the ice is pathetic. Waste of money. Half of the crowd left in the 3rd period and those who stayed booed the rest of the game. Best thing could happen to the Leafs is people stop buying tickets. Richest team in the league and we still have a crummy team to show for it. We should be the YANKEES of the NHL but instead we are a laughingstock. BOOOOOOOOOO!

The venue is great. The spirit is pretencious. The Maple Leafs are dropping like the autumn leaves.

Still love my leafs...took my son and daughter, both play travel hockey and other than the WOW factor of the ACC and some TO players themselves!...well?, at one point i turned to my Bantam Rep son and said, "They, (Toronto) have the same problem as your team...don't look before they pass the puck. (usually to the other team)....no one wants the puck, and the goalie???well he is on his own too!!!....Didn't like the booing fans at the end of the game and heard chants like...."Lets fire Wilson!!!"...still early...hope both teams come together by Christmas..especially my son's!!!.:)

  • Its hard being a Leaf fan these days.

by Meatgrinder on 2009-10-18Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

The game had promise, the crowd was into it early-on, but the Leafs just couldn't deliver yet again their first win of the season. The game got progressively worse. I can't say it wasn't by a lack of trying, just something with this team is not clicking. Lack of leadership is probably a huge factor. Anyways - I think MLSE should refund everybody who was at that game last night... and probably for all the home games of the regular season so far this year.

  • Even when the Leafs Lose it's Still Fun

by ShizNick on 2009-10-14Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

This was the first game I've been to in over a year and eventhough the lacking Leafs were not up to par for this game it was still very exciting and fun to watch. There were some big fights, some huge saves, questionable calls and nice looking goals. You can't ask for anything more in a good hockey game. The game started with a tribute to a, recently passed away, former captain of the Leafs that was very touching and well organized. Then halfway through the first period they played a short montage highlighting Darcy Tucker's career as a Maple Leaf as it was his first time back in Toronto since he was traded some time ago. The Leafs lost, and badly at that, but it was one hell of a show and a great game to see. I hope I can to another one this year and hopefully by then they have won a game.

  • Can the Leafs be fixed?....

by BringStanleyHome on 2009-10-14Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

... before its too late?? My feeling is that the season is already a write-off. Sad thing, which is the cherry on top, is that we've given away our 1st round picks for the next 2 seasons for a player not on the team yet LOL Entertaining game to watch like being in a Yuk-Yuks club. Never laughed so hard but seeing Tucker for probably the last time on ACC ice was nice.

  • leafs loose again

up in the nosebleeds at the acc....the view was ok but there were too many drunk idiots there to enjoy the game with my ten year old.......

  • SIX LOSSES IN A ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by rafter on 2009-10-14Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

What can be said? Is Kessle going to be the saviour? One thing for sure, it is not the goaltenders or the defence. I think the forwards cannot score and backcheck. Some only standout in fights. Fights do not win games but they do excite fans. Call up the young guys, give Kandri a chance. Trade away all the forward veterans and get a now present young star if possible.

  • not worth the money

by exleaf on 2009-10-13Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

It is unbelieable that the Toronto Maple Leafs can charge so much for tickets - yet play so poorly. It is sad that "going to a leaf game" is no longer a family event.

  • leafs vs penguins

by fanleafs on 2009-10-12Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

Why can't you get AM 640 reception in the building to listen to the play by play? Seat section 122 row 22 seat 15 not impressed. It's a corner seat. Absolutely no leg room and a condensed tight seat. Very uncomfortable.

  • GO LEAFS GO!

    by NeNe2 on 2009-10-11Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic game. To bad they lost but the crowd was fun and the game was exciting. :) Id highly recommend a Leafs Game to all my friends! One thing though cheaper beer.

  • NOTHING BUT A GOON SQUAD

by plum on 2009-10-11Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

It is sad to see how pitiful the team Brian Burke has assembled. It's safe to say it will be 43 years without a sniff at the Cup. Most disturbing is that they are nothing more than a goon squad now - 5 fights in 2 periods and I Ileft the arena. Also pitiful is the request on the jumbotron 2 and 3 times each period for the fans to make noise on the count of 3. How pathetic for the supposed hockey capital of the world tohave to resort to such measures. That promo belongs in Nashville and Phoenix - not Toronto. .
