Toronto Maple Leafs History

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cup Championships and seven division championships, with more than 60 former players, coaches and executives in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Maple Leafs were one of the NHL's founding teams in 1917. They originally were known as the Arenas and then the St. Patricks before taking their current name in 1927 after Conn Smythe bought the franchise.

The team won two Stanley Cup Championships in the NHL's first five years and returned to the finals in 1932 behind the "Kid Line" of eventual Hall of Famers Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau, and Busher Jackson. In 1942, they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the first of five Stanley Cup Championships under coach Hap Day. The addition the following year of center Ted Kennedy helped the Leafs maintain their dominance, and resulted in another title in 1951.

The Leafs won three Stanley Cup Championships in a row starting in 1962, and another in the 1966-1967 season, thanks to a roster brimming with players who would end up in the Hall of Fame: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton, Allan Stanley, Bob Pulford, and Frank Mahovlich.

The team returned to the conference finals in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, then again in 1998-1999—the latter trip powered by eventual franchise scoring leader Mats Sundin. The Maple Leafs have appeared in the Playoffs every year consecutively since 2017. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made the Playoffs a total of 74 times to date.

A friend and i went to see Toronto play Pittsburgh. We are Pittsburgh fans and didn't really know what to expect. We had amazing seats, everyone was extremely friendly and courteous. I would definately recommend this to anyone who is a hockey fan!

  • Leafs come through

by Alby on 2009-09-24Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

My husband & I got tickets for the Leafs/Pittsburgh game for Tuesday night. The seats were in the nosebleeds, but we thought "who cares, at least we're there". The first period started out with the Penguins scoring their first goal within the first period of play. It wasn't too long after that that they scored their second goal. The Leafs looked shaky and spent the rest of the period just trying to get a shot on goal. We were thinking "Oh no, it's the Leafs of every other season". To my surprise though, they came out strong in the second period and had some big hits too. They finally scored and then tied it up late in the third period. Unfortunately, we had to leave then because we had to drive back to Oshawa. We did listen to the overtime period and shootout on the radio on the way home and were delighted that they were able to pull off a win after all. Overall, a very enjoyable night at the ACC.

  • My first Leafs game at the ACC, AMAZING!!!!!

    by LeafsFan4Life on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Last night I went to my very first Leaf's game at the Air Canada Centre, and I will never forget it!!! The experience is absolutely incredible, almost 20-thousand Leaf fans screaming cheering on the team, it was so much fun being a part of it all! Seeing young gun Nazem Kadri score the game-tying goal, and then again in the shootout, was definitely one of the top highlights of the night! Watching the Leafs play in person is WAY better than watching the game on TV, I will definitely be going to many more games at the ACC in the future!

  • Leafs Beat Pens!!!

by squeeker on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The event was amazing!!!! the seats that we had were great; just to the right of the goal. And the leafs came out to win last night! And to anyone going you must try Burkie's Dog House. The line is long but their Poutine Dog is excellent! Word of advice, get lots of napkins because they heap the gravy on.

  • Standing Room

    by Angela0976 on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great game, I could see the whole rink which was fantastic but I think I would think twice about standing room the ACC should think about putting in stools that fold from the wall up there.

  • Loved the game!

    by Blondie87 on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Although we were in the red section, the seats were amazing! Non stop action, overtime and a shootout! What a great night!

  • Love my Pens

by CambridgePensFan on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The event itself was great, however being pre-season all the players who I would have liked to have seen were not playing. This was unfortunate considering the amount of money that the Leafs request for a ticket to an exhibition game. Other than that everything went well and my dealings with Ticket master went completely smooth as usual. Thanks again.

  • the Boys Are Back in Town

by Divadeedee on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I usually go to a pre-season Leaf game expecting a stinker. I use the time to get familiar with the off-season aquisitions and associate the numbers to names. I was so suprised that after a shaky start, the Leafs really kicked it into high gear against the Stanley Cup Pittsburgh Penguins. While they may not have had Sid the Kid dressed, they did have Leaf killer Brent Johnson in net. Keep an eye on this new kid Kadri. He is playing to impress!! This may be a good season after all!

  • Leafs are always fun

by Toronto on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Great times. Not a single boring minute! Every seat in the house is great!

  • Go Leafs Go!!!

by beLEAFer on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and son went to the leaf game last night against the Penguins and they had a great time. It is always great to see the hockey game in person especially with your family. We will definately go again- if we are able to get tickets. We also go to the Marlies as it is easier and cheaper to see.

  • Bad Street Meat but Amazing game!

by RockstarDan on 2009-09-23Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

well the night started off with the worst street vendor sausage on a bun in the city but ended up with an incredible comeback with from the boys in blue. Even though the even was just a pre-season game without the likes of Hagman, Stajan, Blake, Crosby, Malkin, and Fleury the young guys brought it to the table and made you forget that the big names weren't there. The game started out shaky for toronto as pittsburghs Ryan Bayda netted his first pre-season goal at 1:43 into the first period followed by Chris Connor at 12::48 into the first period. It wasn't until after the second pittsburgh goal that Toronto was able to land more than 1 shot on Pittsburghs Brent Johnson. Second Period at 7:33 Viktor Stahlberg scores the Leafs first goal of the night with assists from both rookies Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson (Watch out for this line as they will be tearing it up this season). Mike Komisarek looks to be the toughness Toronto needed as he managed to land multiple hits throughout the night and even take on Matt Cooke and Jordan Stall at the same time and beat down both of them which was incredibly exciting to see. Third Period the Leafs turned it up a few more notches and jumped past Pittsburgh int he shot department but could not put the puck past goalie John Curry and Torontos Toskala amde some big saves to keep his team in the race to tie things up. But, with all hope lost and with 1:58 left in the game the Leafs #1 draft choice Nazem Kadri lights up the ice and saves the day scoring to tie the game 2-2. After a tough but exciting 5 minute over-time the game goes into a shoot-out Toronto Nazem Kadri shootout goal (Best shoot-out deke i've ever seen!) Pittsburgh Jordan Staal shootout miss (Bood the entire way down the ice) Toronto Tyler Bozak shootout miss (Almost got it in) Pittsburgh Chris Conner shootout saved (not even close) Toronto Lee Stempniak shootout goal (the leafs win!!!!) Amazing night and worth every penny to see it! Can't wait for next time

  • Leafs vs. Flyers was memorable

by Dereck on 2009-09-22Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my sons first Toronto Maple Leafs game and he loved it. We arrived early so he could see the ACC before the game started. The staff in the gift shop were so good with him and I am sure he will always remember their kindness. We were close to nose bleed section but the view was still good. The atmosphere was joyful, people were yelling when the Leafs got a goal and the people in the seats around us were high fiving my son. He seemed to enjoy the fights also. We took the TTC home and I asked him if he would go again, he said yes (of course). Sadly we will have to next year’s preseason game to afford it. He had pizza, he had ice cream, he had his lucky Leafs boxers on and most importantly he had fun. GO LEAFS GO!!

  • Sweet Comeback !!!

    by Puke911 on 2009-09-22Air Canada Centre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

After being ahead 2-1 at the end of the first...the leafs got up to their usual "drag the heels" in the second period to end up being down 4-2 at the end of the second period. The third period started off slow but then the leafs exploded and came back with 2 quick goals in the tail end of the third to tie it and put it into overtime. They were all over them throughout the third and carried that momentum into OT and within minutes were celebrating a beauty of a win. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of that throughout the regular season and more of that great play from Nik Hagman, who was definately without question, the first star of the game.
