2014 Scotties - Tournament of Hearts in Montreal

by Jordon on 2014-02-21Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

The curling was fabulous so the event is always a must see! Unfortunately, not many in Montreal bothered to attend - the stands were never more than half full even for the important playoff games and finals. Montreal did a terrible job of hosting. The event was held in an arena away from anything like a restaurant and without a liquor license if you can believe that for an adult event! The Sweetheart Lounge was licensed, and only as far away as crossing the parking lot, but the food offered there was the same 4 items everyday all day! Due to the arena's location there was nothing nearby that people could go to and return for the evening entertainment. In fact, the lounge was so badly supported that when the band started up at 8:30pm Saturday evening there were about 5o people in the place! At 9:00pm the band packed up and walked out. A huge opportunity for the city to host a big event was lost and I'm sure the CCA did not make the much needed funds they would normally expect from these national events. Sad, truly a sad waste of all those volunteer's time.

    Scotties venue didn't rock

by Beachboss on 2014-02-14Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

There was a problem between the CCA and the city of Montreal so there was no liquor license in the venue that showed the curling; there wasn't even coffee/concessions for the 9am games at the beginning of the event...seemed to be a bit disorganized; this isn't the first event the CCA has organized so I don't believe they are to blame.

    Great atmosphere

A good sizeable crowd for a championship game made for a fun night at a seldom used arena.

    Montreal "Rocks"

by Bobko on 2014-02-11Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

Event went well, but was not as well organized as several we attended in the past. Concessions were very limited--only two Subway concessions for the whole arena. No hot food--only pre-wrapped subway sandwiched and cookies. No beer or hard liquor available. Lots of rumbling in the stands over that one. Rumour had it that the CCA thought that booze was too risky--whatever that meant. We used the Metro to travel back and forth each day--perfect !! Arena was very dated--even though it had been renovated a few years ago. Anyhow, curling was fantastic and can't wait for the next one back in home province Manitoba.

Congrats to Rachel and the girls from Ottawa!

by TravelMan on 2014-02-11Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

A friend and I spent a week in Montreal at the Scotties. We attended the last 11 draws as well as the finals. Most entertaining. A fantastic performance by Rachel Homan, Emma Miskew, Alison Kreviazuk, and Lisa Weagle as Team Canada. They went undefeated throughout round-robin play (11-0), then won both their page playoff and gold medal game. This marked their second consecutive win at the Scotties, and the first time for a clean sweep (13-0) since Linda Moore back in '85. Rachel never had to throw her final stone in any of the draws. They are also the youngest team ever to win back-to-back Scotties Tournaments. Truly, an absolute pleasure to watch live.

Seats were awful, food was poor, however the people of Montreal were great as were all the volunteers, the facility was adequate for the event just set up poorly. Leads me to ask-do we set up the Scottie's to be a second class event?

by Mascotte on 2014-02-11Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

It was a great event! Very good game! I wish there were big screens to have a close up of the stones in the house. Nevertheless, it was fantastic!!! I hope the tourament comes back in the province of Québec very soon!!!

    Quality of curling was awesome

by TheMa on 2014-02-09Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

The curling was great. View from seats anywhere in the arena was excellent. Very friendly staff. However. The lack of breverages, no service in arena except for very small coffee ship with limited food was disappointing! While the party area had a great setup not everyone wants to have to walk across a blowy cold parking lot. None of the walkways to the arena doors were shovelled resulting in icy dangerous walking

There is no Jumbotron in the Maurice Richard Arena Had to spend $15.00 on a special device to listen to the TSN broadcast - the radio that we purchased at a previous Scotties shouldn't work in Montreal. Only one small concession booth in the arena & nowhere to purchase alcohol Only one food outlet in the Heartstop & was cash only - huge lineup for food, & only one brand of beer on Saturday & Sunday Insufficient washrooms in the Heartstop.

    Wow, great curling

by AceOttawa on 2014-02-08Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

Bummer about the flu, but the athletes put on a marvelous performance, curling was top-rate, the venue was outstanding, great location (one minute walk from metro station), volunteers were super ambassadors for curling, Montreal, and Quebec, and fans were good sports and supporters, and let us mention the sponsors. We had a wonderful day at the Scotties, so glad that we went. Curling, Canada's most fun, competitive sport!!,

    Terrible venbue

by Tazzzie on 2014-02-08Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

The band at the Heartstop Lounge was fantastic, but the arena is not good for a curling event. No alcohol or concessions. Not enticing for people to stay on premises. Also, the arena seats are very uncomfortable.

    Youth was the call

by DickieLake on 2014-02-07Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

This year it was great to see so many NEW YOUNG TEAMS. If the Scottie's is to continue then the old guard must encourage young woman to compete.

    Boring!

by Sarahlee on 2014-02-04Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

The best in Canada? Please. Most teams there were wearing training pants... Athletes were very nice but curling the first weekend was perhaps not their finest hour. The location? Well, fine of a sort. Everyone had to sit a good 20 ft up away from the rinks. Forget a close view - or bring your binoculars. And no jumbo screen. The set up of food and drinks, or should I say "lack thereof" was very poorly presented. I can't imagine the poor souls who are there for the week. Horrid expensive junk food in a totally separate building, no liquour in the arena, no decent restaurants for kilometers around... Stay home; get the commentary, decent food and drinks and close ups of your favourites.

Curling was great, organization not so much..

by MrFrinkles on 2014-02-04Arena Maurice Richard - Montreal

Surprised that the Scottties would not have coffee or tea available for spectators, especially since the event is sponsored by Tim Hortons. Save your money and watch at home. The only place available to buy anything (not coffee/tea) was at a small canteen located a shot walk away. There was no indication of where this canteen was located , just a lot of signs saying that it existed. Disappointed when we did finally find it since we were just looking for a hot drink.

Overall the curling was fabulous! The people I sat beside were great. I really enjoyed myself. I now have a signed Sasha Carter shirt. However I was frustrated that I was bumped from my orinigal seats by the media without notice or an apology. We were not given anything for the inconvenience either, not even a free coffee or a pin. We bought my tickets a year ago on the internet. I was not the only one this happen too. The organizers of the Scotties in Red Deer and Ticketmaster had to move alot of people because of the media. I felt sorry for them. The only other thing I found frustrating was not enough gluten free food options. I have Celiac disease and can't eat anything containing gluten.

My husband and I enjoyed the whole Tournament of Hearts. We attended nearly every draw. There were some awesome games! We especially like the fact that you don't have to go outside to get to the Heartstop Lounge.

    Scotties Bonspeil was awesome!

by grayrock on 2012-02-29Enmax Centrium - Red Deer

I attended all the draws at the Scotties and found: volunteers were very pleasant and helpful the Western Hamburger purchased in the Heartstop Lounge was the best lunch the soft ice-cream, a mix of vanilla and chocolate, was the BEST snack facilities were kept clean the private box we were invited to share on one occasion was very nice -- the luncheon included a variety of tasty snacks - views were good security and ushers were very helpful when I lost my seat cushions but having the Lost and Found in two/three different locations was confusing enjoyed the young Lite Rock curlers carrying the banners for the team introductions but think the kids should have received complementary passes for those games-- their parents would have purchased a ticket to attend the game with them rather than leaving after the introduction of the teams. As it was, the Lite rock curlers received no public acknowledgement for volunteering--- something as simple as "Banners for each team are being carried by members of Red Deer's Lite Rock Curling Club" would have been recognition enough. Two Junior Curling Team members from various Central Alberta clubs were introduced at center ice with the provincial team that was being recognized that day. that was a great idea! despite all the snow, the paths around the arena were kept clear and most were sanded for safety box-office happily replaced a lost ticket so I was able to attend the game immediately and did not miss a shot ---perhaps caution Provincial team members to watch their language as there was a lot of swearing - many of the words were audible or easily recognized on the televised broadcasts. Children who were in attendance or who watched the broadcasts should not accept this as the 'norm' for curlers - male or female. --really enjoyed the MC - Stu Brown, I believe ---and all the activities after each end kept all entertained. Great sponsor - with a short but meaningful speech at the ending ceremonies. Great job by the Committee - please do it again soon!
