Michigan Wolverines Women’s Basketball History

The University of Michigan Wolverines launched the women’s basketball team in 1973 and earned their first March Madness berth in 1990. The Wolverines began to surge during the ’10s after making their first tournament appearance in over a decade in 2012 and a second round advancement in 2013. The Michigan women’s basketball team secured their first postseason championship at the 2017 Women's National Invitation Tournament on their ninth appearance. The following season, the Wolverines kicked off a streak of seven consecutive NCAA Tournament berths between 2018 and 2025, including the program’s first Elite Eight appearance in 2022. The Wolverines have been led by two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year Kim Barnes Arico since 2012.

The Michigan Wolverines play at the Crisler Center, which first opened in 1967 and currently seats 12,707. The venue’s student section has taken on a life of its own as the Maize Rage. The arena also serves as the home of the Wolverines men’s basketball team and the women’s gymnastics team.
