VAN HALEN IN CONCERT:

In their rise stardom, the legendary rockers of Van Halen left an indelible mark on hard rock and heavy metal by challenging conventional notions of what was musically possible. From the hot-wired licks of guitarist Eddie Van Halen to the heart-pounding double bass drumming of his brother Alex, their supercharged sound never fails to excite audiences in concert. And with legendary frontman David Lee Roth bringing his charisma back to the fold, the group has recaptured the same energy that made them a must-see spectacle in the first place. Incendiary hits like “Hot for Teacher” and “Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love” still sit perfectly beside catchy favorites like “Jump” and “Dance the Night Away”, and ticket buyers can’t help but sing along to all the classics every time Van Halen plays on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Growing up in a musical household, brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen pushed each other to become instrumental virtuosos by their teens. They started playing with dynamic singer David Lee Roth and bassist Marc Anthony in 1974, settling on the eponymous Van Halen moniker later that year. Their self-titled 1978 debut went on to sell over 10 million copies thanks to Eddie’s game-changing guitar playing, Roth’s flamboyant persona, and their undeniably catchy songs. The band became a veritable hard rock institution with their masterstroke album 1984, which contained the number 1 hit “Jump” and helped them crossover from metal to mainstream. Unfortunately, conflicts between Roth and the rest of the band lead to a falling out, and the frontman was replaced by Sammy Hagar. The new Van Halen lineup scored more hits, while Roth concurrently enjoyed a successful solo career. Eventually Hagar split with the group as well, and they briefly hired former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone before announcing a hiatus in 1999. The band reunited with Hagar in 2003 for a reunion tour, but tensions in the band resulted in him leaving again. Tempers between David Lee Roth and the band had cooled by that point, and he rejoined Van Halen in 2006, while Eddie’s son Wolfgang took over on bass. Their fresh lineup still inspires the same pandemonium from their early days, while their 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth (their first record with Roth since 1984) continues to excite fans around the world.

Seriously fun night! DLH is such a blast! The concession service and prices at the arena needs a lot of work.

    Sound Man problem.

    by yep326 on 2012-06-13MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The sound man should have done a better job. Distortion glore in every song. Couldn't make out most of the songs. I did make out Jump which was the last song. Kool and the Gang was better the the lead act.

Van Halen at the MTS in Winnipeg

by HipsterDoofus on 2012-06-13MTS Centre - Winnipeg

Despite the fact you could tell that the Van Halens all TOTALLY HATE and DESPISE Diamond Dave they put on a terrific show. Eddie can still play guitar! I mean totally.. What was cool was why these guys keep getting back together when they can't stand each other.

    Van Halen was was different

    by 2493 on 2012-06-12Rogers Arena - Vancouver

I saw Van Halen back in '86? in Vancouver with Sammy Hagar and loved the show although I was a huge David Lee Roth fan. During this last concert, I was very disappointed with the show and even more so that i had bought 4 tickets. The band was amazing but what the hell was David doing? I looked forward to hearing his signature voice but you couldn't even sing along with the music and he changed up EVERY song. It's one thing to change some of the vocals to address the city you're in but not one song did he sing properly to. Again, i loved watching the rest of the band. Anyone i had known that attended the concert had the same to say. I also understand that the band had asked the fans not to be in use (as per security) and the arena was sooooo hot that 2 of the people that were with me had to listen to the rest of the concert- last 4 songs at least- outside of the seating area. One of them just about passed out due to the heat. I found it very hot myself.

    Van Halen - Vancouver Show

    by 1TSOfan on 2012-06-12Rogers Arena - Vancouver

Well it's my 3rd time seeing VH now. This show didn't really deliver as much jam packed excitement as the previous ones I have seen. Eddie and Alex are pure perfectionists and never dissappointment their fans. Looks like David forgot some of the words, or seemed to be doing a bit of ad-libbing here and there on a song or two at the end of the show. Granted he's allot older now. I think it's probably the last time to see this band perform. Wonder why Wolfie was not given a bit of a solo like the other three had? Hmmm...anyway glad I went. Hats off to Cool and the Gang for getting the crowd warmed and and rocking at the end.

by MIKS on 2012-06-12Rogers Arena - Vancouver

Every Van Halen had an excellent show...guitar, bass, drums....all tight....all excellent.... The vocals were tough...rough and often out of key....diamond dave is sparkling a little less bright...but nice to see the high kicks.

Awesome show. Van Halens moves are still out of this world. I wish I could move like that, and have the energy he does.

Great to see these guys! Good venue. The biggest issue was that the music was so loud at times that you could barely hear the singing.

Horrible!! Not the Van Halen I remember!

by larar on 2012-06-12Rexall Place - Edmonton

This was probably the worst concert I have ever been to, and I've been to alot! There was no band dynamics, the interaction with the crowd came off forced and fake and David Lee Roth of now is better suited to a Vegas show. The only saving grace was being able to say that I saw Eddie Van Halen perform and do the best guitar solo I have ever seen...but that would kind of go without saying. Let the concert bored and dejected.

    Terrible

    by Dawnchester1 on 2012-06-12MTS Centre - Winnipeg

I expected that the quality of showmanship would naturally be less of an aging rock band but this was embarassing. Dave couldn't remember most of the words of the songs he sung with Van Halen but had no trouble remembering the songs he sung when he broke away from the band. Don't waste your money.

    Diamond Dave is Back!!!

    by Bonavox67 on 2012-06-12Rogers Arena - Vancouver

Kool & the Gang did a great job in warming up a really "white" audience! Van Halen's set was tight! Alex performed an awesome drum solo. Wolfie held his own on bass...Michael Who? Eddie proved once again that he's the master of the guitar solo! What can be said about Dave? He's an original, dude. Singing, dancing, forgetting lyrics, rapping & storytelling!

    The Mighty Van Halen

    by Cutlass66 on 2012-06-12Rogers Arena - Vancouver

As a fan of Van Halen for my thirty three years on this planet, getting to see VH with David Lee Roth at the helm was the highlight of the years of fandom. I've played guitar since the age of Nine and of coarse been heavily influenced by Mr Edward Van Halen, so seeing the master guitarist playing Live is an extra special treat. And this tour is Van Halen on Fire!! Eddie's playing is right on. Alex's drumming is spectacular. And Dave...well Dave has always been Dave. Even since the old days he has never really sung the songs Live the same way as they are recorded. And that's fine. That's just Diamond Dave. He is Stage Presence. A Front Man. And I was actually surprised by how strong his voice was when I saw the show. And I'm glad to see its all smiles between band members now. And Eddie seems very happy with his band. Now Wolfie. I know people have been belly aching for Mike Anthony to be back in the band...but you know what? Wolfgang is more than proving he's a part of this band and that he is in fact a Van Halen. He has chops! Great bass player and he's playing riffs that I don't think Mikey could pull off in some if the new tunes. And he's a great back up singer. So I for one am happy with this version of Van Halen. It Rocks!! No doubt about it. I also feel that there wouldn't be any Van Halen with out the new found excitement and drive from wolfgang being in the band. So yes Van Halen is Back and I highly suggest seeing them on this years tour. Much better playing and chops than the previous 2007-08 tour with David Lee Roth and MILES better than the terrible 2004 reunion with Sammy Hagar!

    Disappointed

    by Ranman14 on 2012-06-12MTS Center - Winnipeg

I was totally disappointed with the sound of Van Halen. This is the second time I saw them at different venues and was truly disappointed by the terrible sound that overshadowed Roth's voice. There were so many times I could not understand hime while the music was playing, but when all 3 vocals sang the problem seemed to disappear. My guess is that the sound company did not have the system checked properly with Roth's voice. Drum solo was good, guitar solo was best... Even thought how dumb it was to playback on the screen everytime Roth did a high kick or a smooth move. The first couple times sure, but everytime during the concert? Come on... I will only listen to them on cd or album from now on...I will never go see them live again. Kool and the Gang was much better and the sound was set perfect.

It was a great concert ! Brought my 13 year old daughter and her friend. They had a blast !!! Kids got the thumbs up for attending from other concert goers. Cool that they liked Van Halen. Van Halen played well and the set list was excellent. My only disappointment was that it wasnt loud enough. Crank it up...i want to be deaf for at least an hour after the show!!!!! It was a fantastic show. don't believe the haters. Just go....

    Van Halen was HO HUM

by LaurieVog on 2012-06-12Rogers Arena - Vancouver

I can now scratch Van Halen off my "must see" concert list. Been there. Done that. Won't see them again. The concert was just "okay". Nothing spectacular - though it was kind of funny watching David Lee Roth jump around and acting half his age.
