VAN HALEN IN CONCERT:

In their rise stardom, the legendary rockers of Van Halen left an indelible mark on hard rock and heavy metal by challenging conventional notions of what was musically possible. From the hot-wired licks of guitarist Eddie Van Halen to the heart-pounding double bass drumming of his brother Alex, their supercharged sound never fails to excite audiences in concert. And with legendary frontman David Lee Roth bringing his charisma back to the fold, the group has recaptured the same energy that made them a must-see spectacle in the first place. Incendiary hits like “Hot for Teacher” and “Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love” still sit perfectly beside catchy favorites like “Jump” and “Dance the Night Away”, and ticket buyers can’t help but sing along to all the classics every time Van Halen plays on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Growing up in a musical household, brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen pushed each other to become instrumental virtuosos by their teens. They started playing with dynamic singer David Lee Roth and bassist Marc Anthony in 1974, settling on the eponymous Van Halen moniker later that year. Their self-titled 1978 debut went on to sell over 10 million copies thanks to Eddie’s game-changing guitar playing, Roth’s flamboyant persona, and their undeniably catchy songs. The band became a veritable hard rock institution with their masterstroke album 1984, which contained the number 1 hit “Jump” and helped them crossover from metal to mainstream. Unfortunately, conflicts between Roth and the rest of the band lead to a falling out, and the frontman was replaced by Sammy Hagar. The new Van Halen lineup scored more hits, while Roth concurrently enjoyed a successful solo career. Eventually Hagar split with the group as well, and they briefly hired former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone before announcing a hiatus in 1999. The band reunited with Hagar in 2003 for a reunion tour, but tensions in the band resulted in him leaving again. Tempers between David Lee Roth and the band had cooled by that point, and he rejoined Van Halen in 2006, while Eddie’s son Wolfgang took over on bass. Their fresh lineup still inspires the same pandemonium from their early days, while their 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth (their first record with Roth since 1984) continues to excite fans around the world.

Huge waste of money, only go if you like Cool n the Gang. Ruined Van Halen for me forever. Used to be my favourite band growing up, very sad.

DLR ain't the rooster he used to be...

by ericathered on 2012-06-11Rexall Place - Edmonton

Lots of great guitar riffs and solo and a great drum solo too. DLR was singing lyrics slowly and then playing catch up towards the end of the line so it sounded sluggish and then too fast. The band didn't acknowledge Wolfgang VH at all and I had thought it would have been so cool for him to play onstage with his dad and uncle, but then not to even be introduced to the audience just sucked! DLR can stll do the roundhouse kick but can't do the full splits anymore. Thought the B/W film of him in the apartment dancing was kind of goofy. Leave the dog show at the website. It's cool and all, but not for a concert. T-shirts $45 base price were too expensive.

    Van Halens - minus DLR

by cubber on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

WOW, what a let down for a true fan...DLR was defeiniely not engaged in the process of treating life long fans, he was clearly pissed off at his contract...as he brough it up during hot for teacher...VH brothers were tight but DLR ruined the show with a 30% effort, only singing when he felt like it.

Van Halen - some good memories

by BCRocker on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

Considering age of the band member they put on a good show. Wolf was much better and helped on vocals. Overall a better show than last go round. That said. I think this will be the last. David is sounding a bit tired and Eddie has to sit down now for any extended solo. To bad no Micheal Anthony but he's having fun playing again and making money with Chicken Foot. For sure go see those guys. Nope this will be the last visit

    Past prime

by OutwestHighRiver on 2012-06-11Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Van Halen Calgary- I really wanted to enjoy this concert, and for the most part, I did. I was hoping it would be as exciting as 2007, but David Lee Roth and his vocals are clearly past their prime. He also forgot the words a couple times, and let the background vocalists save them. The cost of the price per ticket was not worth the price of admission.

    Van Halen Rocked!!!

by Bigbuckadams on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

What can I say, my first time seeing VH with DLR, sure they're getting old, but it was still a great show!!! Its going to be my last concert, as I have a terminal illness, so I'm very happy to have seen them :)

    Van Halen was horrible

    by tazz1010 on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

If I could ask for my money back I would. We left after 5 songs. DLR forgot his lyrics, the act was boring. In all the worst concert I have ever gone to. I was very disapointed since I was so excited to go in the first place

The Curtain Has Closed For Dave.

by PhatLen on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

All in All Eddie and the boyz were great. Music was tight, Video and Stage was awesome, but unfortunately Dave was soooooo bad ! He clearly is no where near the singer he once was. Totally off key, timing was off, voice shot. I have always loved Van Halen and Dave. They were my favourite band of all-time. But at this show it was like the boys were playin' hard rock while Dave was doin Vegas Smaltz Lounge music. In other words..Friggin Horrible. I was so disappointed and kept hoping it would get better, but not to be. In fact, not that I'm a singer by any means, but he was so bad, I could've done a better job. At least I know how to keep it in key !

David Lee Roth, a shadow of his former self

by Gunwale on 2012-06-11Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I never thought that I would hear myself saying this but Van Halen was a huge disappointment for me. They were my favourite band througout the 80's and into the mid 90's but that was due mostly to Sammy Hagar however their internal squabbling became too political and they soon fell off the radar for me. They returned for a concert tour in 2004 and it was impeccable! Classic Van Halen belted out by Sammy but this latest iteration does not even come close to the former Van Halen with Roth years. Eddy was awesome and Alex and Wolfgang held their own but Roth couldn't cut it. He even apologized half way through with some cheesy "there's a lot of smoke up here" excuse for speaking the lyrics instead of singing them. I'm affraid that Roth's days are through. If Eddy doesn't reunite with Sammy he should retire the Van Halen name. IMHO.

    Save your money!!

by KLMH on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

Such a disappointment! Horrible performance by David Lee Roth. He never sang a whole song the entire concert. Forget the words old man??? Sound was terrible as though they were using the same equipment from the 70's. Saving grace was Eddie, his smiling face and awesome strumming. Wish I'd saved my money and listened to my old albums instead.

Van Halen rocked, David Lee Roth - not so much

by BenitoM on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

The band played fabulously! If only David Lee Roth's singing could have kept pace, it would have been an unbelievable show. As it was, I enjoyed myself but seriously thought that my own singing was better than his. Seriously! Best drum solo ever and an awesome guitar solo by Eddie, of course. David either needs some voice lessons or maybe start lip synching...

    Van Halen Sound was terrible

by Chade on 2012-06-11Rogers Arena - Vancouver

Van Halen were great. Dave Lee Roth sounded amazing still. The soundman ruined the show. There were points that were very distorted and echoed. So much so that in some songs I couldn't find the beat until the lyrics started.

The boys are back in town, and this time they are here to play. Seriously. Eddie , Alex, Wolfgang, and the honorary Van Halens are determined to rip the world a new set of ears. They reclaimed their legacy with this tour and showcased their mad skills. So many black sweaty T-shirts dancing in a frenzy. So much noise and confusion. Forget Occupy and tuition riot madness. The kids just wanna rock!

This really could be the last time...

by Totofan on 2012-06-06MGM Grand Hotel - Las Vegas

You just never know with these guys, if this will be the last tour, or who will even be in the band if they continue...That said, it was a very good show and Roth was in pretty good form though he does a lot of talking (even when he should be singing). Wolfie is really pretty good and you can't fault him for taking the place of Mike Anthony. Everyone was very solid and Eddie was great, I can't really say if he's as good as before but darn close. I think - aside from the ticket price - that any fan of any version of Van Halen would still enjoy the show.

    Van Halen rocked!

by chiefkewj on 2012-06-05MTS Centre - Winnipeg, MB

One of the main reasons I decided to go was to say I seen Eddie Van Halen play live, and what I got was great show regardless by the band. Great interaction with crowd, and great selection of songs. Not entirely sure what Diamond Dave was talking about, but it was amazing to see him moving and running around as much as he was. Very good show

    *Mind Blown*

by Ralphy8663 on 2012-05-20Rexall Place - Edmonton Alberta Canada

I have recently went to go see van halen and well................................It was AMAZING!!!! First off the opening act kool and the gang was amazing. Their singer was great and they had various instruments from trumpets to saxophones, they even had a trombone solo!! But that is enough about the opening act lets get to the meat of the concert VAN HALEN!! They were just incredible, Eddie was killing it on the guitar, he even did a seven minutes long solo which blew me away, Alex was very good, and had an amazing drum solo, Wolfgang seems to have grown into the band and is less awkward then he was when he first joined, and Diamond David Lee Roth was amazing. Though at first it was kind of hard to hear him over eddie but after two songs you could hear him more clearly. They played for 2 hours, i consider that a solid time. This has been the best that I have been to even better then KISS. Also if you are looking to purchase shits at the show they cost around 40-45 dollars and the hoodies range from 100-120 dollars. If they are in a city near you go see them you won't regret it! Do eeet!!

    Best Classic Rock Band!!

by Anonymous on 2012-05-15Rexall Place - Edmonton

Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, David Lee Roth can do whatever he wants, it's a concert, you go for a show, if you went for music then you could just stay home and listen to it. So all of the people who are saying David Lee Roth isn't at his best, don't know how to enjoy a concert. I personally though David Lee Roth was amazing, he was moving the whole time and definitely put on a show. Same with Eddie, always moving around and rocking out pretty good for 57 years olds. Wolfgang added great backing vocals to the band and of course Alex was amazing on the drums. I would easily recomend this concert to anyone who likes even just a couple Van Halen songs. Don't go to a concert and expect studio quality music. Also, I don't think that David Lee Roth was any worse than Bono was when U2 were here. I'll definitely go see them if they come back.
