Vancouver Canucks History

The Vancouver Canucks started play in 1970, entering the league along with the Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver has been to the Stanley Cup Final on three occasions, though they lost to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Despite humble beginnings, the Canucks continued to develop. With the arrival of three key players — Captain Trevor Linden, netminder Kirk McLean, and "the Russian Rocket" Pavel Bure, the Canucks had a winning Playoff run season — making it to the 1994 finals.

The Canucks continued to acquire superstars like Alexander Mogilny and Markus Näslund, and while the following years meant a series of losses, it allowed for the team to draft Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who would go on to lead the Canucks to Presidents' Trophies in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12, as well as their finals appearance in 2011.

Other notable events that have taken place at the arena include the 1998 NHL All-Star Game, 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and in October 2002 when Queen Elizabeth II dropped the ceremonial first puck during an NHL exhibition game between the Canucks and San Jose Sharks. Additionally, the arena played host to Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

    Good Clean Affordable Family Fun!

by WestcoastB on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

One major disappointment was that the Canucks did not take time to sign autographes. We know they have lives and games to prepare for but there are never enough player signings for the real fans and not scalpers or hawkers of merchandise. There was too limited opportunity to have a picture taken for our son with one of the Canucks as the Power Smart team was very unorganized as was guest services as we were told is was just too bad they didn't have any passes left "2min" after the announcement was made to "Go to" guest service to register for the photo op. We had a really great time but I spend alot of money on the Canucks through tickets, jersey's and so on that when this occured, it was very disappointing. Thanks. Brian

    GO CANUCKS GO!

by CaNucKS4Ever on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

This was my second time attending a hockey game at GM place and it was fun. Even though I sat in one of the furthest seats possible, I still had a great view of the game.

    Canucks Open Practice

by nancew on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

Very Generous of the organization and sponsors to have this open to the general public. I think to make it even better, it would be nice to have some additional commentary. Although, I know it is a practice, could the players have a name/number so they can be better identified?

    Canuck practice boring

by KeroseneHat on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

The practice needs more excitement. The line-ups for the kids are too long (eg. facepainting, picture with Fin). They only had 2 face painting stations ... how about a few more??? My son is 4 yrs old and doesn't have the attention-span to wait in line for an hour to get his face painted. Come on Canucks, can't you afford a few more face painting stations??? Or how about a few Fin mascots scattered around so more kids can get their photos with him. The whole thing lacked excitement. I guess I shouldn't complain too much as it was free ... but come on ... let's make it more exciting for the families with kids.

by staunchcanucksfan on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

I took my hubby, son & grandson to the Open Practice. This is the first time we ever went and it will not be the last. We had a fantastic time. I loved seeing all my favourite players, which is basically all of them, on the rink.

    GO CANUCKS!

by SJ319 on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

It was my first time in GM Place and I can never forget that day. I love the shootout part and I think almost everyone was cheering for team Luongo! I was very disappointed that I never heard Daniel Sedin and I was worried if he is okay and I wish to see Daniel back on the ice soon! I wish to see a real game soon in the GM Place and I even dreamed that I got two tickets to watch one of the games in GM Place! I recommend this event to everyone who like the Canucks and it's very exciting too! GO CANUCKS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by SeasonTicketHolder on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

I brought my 11 year old daughter, her 11 year old girl friend and her dad to the Canucks' practise. The girls concluded that the event was boring. As an adult hockey fan I thought it was good for the following reasons: Dan Murphy hosted the event - gave it structure Coaches introduced some of the drills and activities Young fans got autographed sticks Players threw pucks and t-shirts into the crowd Event sponsor BC Hydro gave away pens It lacked zing for the following reasons: At previous practises the Canucks supplied free hotdogs and drinks for the kids Fans who got sticks appeared to be selected by the cute, young factor; not randon choice There were few interactive moments with the crowd. Cheering for team Luongo in the shootout was the only sense of competition in the practise. I conclude that there is room for improvement.

    How great.

by Jaredy on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

I went for my kids sake, but it surprised me how exciting it was. You could really see their skill--much more so than in a game. They went through drills like two-on-three breakaways, breakouts, powerplany set-up and shootpout practice. What skills. A very fun event--but I did want it to go on a little longer. It was only 1.5 hours.

    Great for the young fans.

by Ram6 on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

I took my grandson to this open practice and he was excited and enjoyed it thourghly. I to enjoyed the experience and watching the whole practice. My grandson picked up his new jersey, Kesler #17, the enjoyment seen on his face made my day. He made his way to the glass and was able to get close to the players. He is 8 years old and quite a hockey player himself. The thousands of people at this practice was impressive. Everyone was enjoying themselves. I enjoyed the allumni game as well. My only complaint is that the doors didn't open until 1000 hrs. The same time that the allumni game started causing us to miss most of it. I would reccommend opening the doors 30 minutes earlier.

    Open Practice is a blast!

by IheartCanucks on 2009-10-12General Motors Place - Vancouver

We had a great time at the open practice! We got lower bowl tickets so it was nice to sit closer to the ice as our game tickets are in the upper bowl. I loved watching all the drills and the players were awesome, getting into it with the fans and giving away pucks whenever they could. It was great to see them all in a more relaxed environment, they all have so much fun together!

    Make the players noticeable

by Bean8 on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

We wished that the players would have there names and or numbers on the jersey because it was hard to determine who was who. Especially when this may be the only time that some of these kids will see their heroes up close.

Open Practise was lots of FUN for the whole family

by mumeep on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

We all enjoyed the alumni scrimmage before the actual practise for the Canucks. We were seated on the balcony at center ice, so the view was great! The kids enjoyed guessing which canuck was in blue or green, and the Shoot out at the end was the highlight of the event!

    Good family event

by KTMG on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

This is the second time I've been to the Canucks Open Practice, and it was just as enjoyable as I remembered! Obviously, it's not as exciting as a game, but it's a nice way to spend the morning, seeing as it's inexpensive!

    Canucks fans enjoying Open Practice

by LuckyTraveler on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

For its fourth year, The Vancouver Canucks invited family and fans to its Open Practice. This was the first time that I was able to attend, and it was great to see that The Garage was over 50% filled! JUST TO WATCH THE CANUCKS PRACTICE!! Talk about loyal fans! I arrived just before 11am, only to find out that I‘d missed the Alumni game. Next year, I will sign up on the first day tickets are available, and arrive much earlier! It was great to see that the players, coaches and staff appreciated everybody showing up and support the team.
