About

The renowned professional dance ensemble under the name of Pavlo Virsky is famous for its bright colors, unity of content and form, and the vivid embodiment of its stage concept. This magnificent artistic group embraces the beauty of its native Ukraine. Each and every performance is romantic, elevated, and passionate. The ensemble's diverse concert programs have been warmly received by audiences around the world.

Virsky started in 1937 by two well known Ukrainian ballet masters, Pavlo Virsky and Mykola Bolotov. From 1955 to 1975 the group was lead by Virsky whose exciting choreography has amazed the dance world for years. It was under the guidance of Virsky that the company matured into the professional dance ensemble that the world enjoys today.

In 1980, Myroslav Vantukh, Virsky's disciple and an expert in folk traditions and ethnography took over from Virsky and continued the creative genius, preservation and development of the folk choreographic art form. Virsky continues to grow under the direction of Vantukh as he takes the dancers to new heights of accomplishment through his ever expanding repertoire of new dances and continues to entertain and educate the world about the talents of Ukraine.

Not the BEST, but still impressive

by stanisze on 2010-10-11Kelowna Community Theatre - Kelowna

I enjoyed this show with my Dad for his birthday present. We're both Polish so we figured it would be nice to watch. We both agreed that we liked, though we wouldn't go a second time. I found that most, if not all the songs, were very similar in tempo and rhythm. I know that they are mainly dancers, but it would have been nice to hear a little bit more singing going along with the dancing.

the performance was so good because it was balanced-some elegant feminine pieces then the traditional testosterone laden male athletic stuff.I love dance with props eg boots, staves, swords, hats and tambourines

Wow what a great show! The calibre of dance was second to none! I am so happy I saw them. I will definitely remember that show as one of the best performances if not the best I have ever seen. Just amazing!

To a simpler time in dance!

by Talent on 2010-10-09The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

I loved it! The women's costumes were beautiful and celebrated the Ukrainian tradition which was appreciated. With all the bump and grind of today's dance it was delightful to see a production which had joy, humour, ties to the past, and, a huge amount of energy. My mom is from the Ukraine and tomorrow she will be watching the DVD and reliving moments of her past. I took my friend who was not sure of what she would be seeing. About 15 minutes into the program she turned to me and said she didn't know why but this show was, in her words, uplifting. I concur.

    Virsky - Totally Amazing!!!

by splashover on 2010-10-09The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

OH!!.. My god, this performance was totally amazing! The colours of all the costumes, the liveliness of all the dancers, and the music, absolutely wonderful! The way all the dancers had a perma grin on their faces the whole time, my face did the same. If I could have I would have jumped up and dance around with them, (no where near as good though..) Definately a show worth the money. Our seats were awesome. I am of Ukrainian decent, my husband isnt, so that makes my daughter only half. This was the first time for them to see something like this and they totally enjoyed themselves as well. Cant wait till next year. I would love to go see them again.

    Thrilling athleticism

by Erlampo on 2010-10-09The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

The company put on a truly thrilling show. All of the 20 or more female dancers were stunningly beautiful; their dancing was graceful and charming. The 30 or so male dancers were the true stars of the show, however; their astonishing athleticism was coupled with balletic prowess that would have out Nureyev to shame. Speed, height, flexibility and agility were much in evidence. Virtually all of the men were very goodlooking. The entire troupe is a very positive advertisement for Ukraine. My only complaints are for the canned music (would have been nice to have a small ensemble playing live), and the bare white backdrop on the stage -- could we have had rustic scenes of Ukraine? The dancers deserve better. Costumes were great. All in all, an exciting show, very worthwhile.
