This musical was not what we expected. The title, the subtitle ("The musical by Queen and Ben Elton"), and the iconic silhouette of Freddie Mercury on the PR release suggested that the music and musicians of Queen would be the focus of the plot. It felt like a "bait and switch" situation. For the first 30 minutes, I tried to get over the surprise of this odd "plot" that was not about Queen at all. I kept wondering if I had made a huge mistake spending $700 to bring 7 guests to the show. Perhaps a better subtitle might have been - "an original futuristic musical by Ben Elton, featuring the music of Queen."
In the end, our group ranging from teenagers to 50-somethings enjoyed the show. Some of the acting was weak and reminded me of a high school musical, but the main characters and the band were excellent. Some of the actors spoke too fast for the sound system. We sat in the third balcony and missed some of the clever pop references because the actors didn't give space between lines.
I do think the message of the show - being creative like the artists of the 70s, and not being ruled by technology - was a worthwhile message for the audience, especially the younger generation. Perhaps the subtitle should reflect that, so that audiences might make better decisions as to who would enjoy such a show.
I thought that $90/ticket for the third balcony was too much. $60-75 would have been more appropriate for this show.
