About

Since premiering at Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre in 2003, WICKED has been mesmerizing audiences and breaking records, becoming the second highest-grossing musical in Broadway history with over $1.4 billion in tickets sold. Composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman’s magical “untold true story of the Witches of Oz” has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards — winning three — including Idina Menzel for Best Actress in a Musical as heroine Elphaba. With a captivating score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity” and “For Good,” the WICKED cast album won Best Musical Show Album at the 47th Grammy Awards, with Time magazine cheering, “If every musical had a brain, a heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” In addition to Menzel, the star-studded original cast included Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Joel Grey as the Wizard, Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond. WICKED is also the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.

    WICKED was wickedly awesome

by magbag on 2009-07-13Gershwin Theatre - New York

The 2 witches have incredible voices and are incredible actors. They keep you memorized from beginning to end. I laughed out loud and a quietly cried during this show. I saw this show just 2 months after seeing the Wizard of OZ, so the story was fresh in my mind. I have also read the book, and I loved the story that was portrayed in the musical much better. It is not dark like the book. If I read the book first, I may not have went to the musical. I took some musical newbies with me and they thought it was incredible. The set design, costumes, story and singing is something that I will remember for a very long time.

Wicked was definately the highlight of our recent trip to New York. It was our first time in New York and we did alot of very interesting things but this show was definately at the top of my list. My husband even loved it and he is not normally interested in live theatre.

    One of the best

by amar on 2009-07-11Gershwin Theatre - New York

Excellent first halve. Well intergrated the Wiz of OZ into the story line. Catchy tunes and lyrics. The second half was a little slow, but did pick up towards the end. Overall worth the experience. Strongly recommended.
