About

Since premiering at Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre in 2003, WICKED has been mesmerizing audiences and breaking records, becoming the second highest-grossing musical in Broadway history with over $1.4 billion in tickets sold. Composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman’s magical “untold true story of the Witches of Oz” has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards — winning three — including Idina Menzel for Best Actress in a Musical as heroine Elphaba. With a captivating score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity” and “For Good,” the WICKED cast album won Best Musical Show Album at the 47th Grammy Awards, with Time magazine cheering, “If every musical had a brain, a heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” In addition to Menzel, the star-studded original cast included Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Joel Grey as the Wizard, Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond. WICKED is also the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.

    Wonder of Creativity

by Jasy on 2009-07-26Gershwin Theatre - New York

From Maguire's original plot and characters, to Schwartz's music, to the set design, and costuming, 'Wicked' is a wonder of creativity in storytelling. There is no other production quite like it. If you are choosing one show to see on Broadyway, pick this one! You won't be disappointed,

This prequill to the Wizard of Oz is cleverly written, well-acted, and very entertaining. The production boasts an incredible set design and an array of over-the-top costumes. Wicked will have you laughing aloud throughout - I guarantee you will leave smiling!

    Wicked was wicked!

by simplyred on 2009-07-20Gershwin Theatre - New York

Loved it and would highly recommend this theatre and show! I was frantic trying to get 'just the right seats' but the theatre is fabulous and any seat would be great - orchestra OR mezzanine level. As it goes, we were towards the back under the first meZZ, but the seats were GREAT. Loved the show, funny and witty and wonderful voices on the two main characters. They were all great and the set was beautiful. Enjoy.

    WOW!! So Great!!!

by Allycat on 2009-07-16Gershwin Theatre - New York

If I could have given more that 5 stars I would have! This was just the best show!! We just loved it. It made everything from the Wizard of Oz make sense. From start to finish it was wonderful. There was good humour, sadness and some really good lessons to be learnt. There is so much I would say about this production but I just don't want to give anything away. Having seen this in New York in June we came home and found out that it is playing in Seattle. We have already have purchased our tickets to see it again in September. Truly a must see for the whole family!

    Wonderfully Wicked!

by Lucy06 on 2009-07-15Gershwin Theatre - New York

We were lucky enough to see the NY production in June and the wait was worth it...an extremely tight production - more comedy than I had anticipated, but breathlessly intoxicating. Well worth planning our trip around ticket availability!

    Wicked was amazing!!!

by CLHRS on 2009-07-14Gershwin Theatre - New York

Wicked was much more than I expected. I'm the type of person to doze off for a bit during dull/slow moments while watching a show but this was a rare exception. I was thoroughly entertained all throughout the show. I loved the music, the actors were great and there was just so much energy! I've raved about it to friends and recommend they watch it. I will surely see it again if I get the chance. Great show!

Just see it.. and then you will know why!!

by Mathue on 2009-07-14Gershwin Theatre - New York

Listening to someone else's raving positive opinion can often over-inflate your expectations.. and that I do not want to do as this performance has it's own brand of magic that you need not look for. Just go with an open mind and I'm sure it will win a place in your heart. But if you really have to read on.. here's my take on it - Wicked displays some of the best new songs in the musical theatre world delivered by a pool of talent that is just a joy to watch, add to that a superbly crafted captivating story that manages to transcends all ages. Mix in sets and characters you can't help but feel like have been a part of your life before and you have this thoroughly entertaining show. The Gershwin Theatre is alive as a virtual Oz as I believe this snappy modern fantasy seriously challenges some of our history's best musicals for the #1 spot.

Wicked was the ultimate theatre experience!

by StephCo on 2009-07-14Gershwin Theatre - New York

I've been attending Broadway shows since I was 18, for over 20 years, and I've seen a ton of productions. This show, Wicked, is, without question, one of the best I've ever experienced. I sat with my 9 year old son and my 'theatre resistant' husband. We all loved it, appreciated it and were touched by it. The music is incredible, the performances were spot on, the set design was magical. I can't recommend Wicked more. It really does transcend age, race, nationality and economics. See it!!!!!
