WILCO IN CONCERT:

Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”. Though ticket buyers never quite know what to expect from these innovative musical adventurers, they know they can count on Wilco to deliver a an electrifying, genre-defying concert experience every time they take the stage on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Frontman Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco out of the ashes of his earlier alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, absorbing most of the lineup to release the new band’s 1995 debut A.M. The group quickly developed a reputation for incorporating experimental elements with their next two albums Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999). Despite those sonically ambitious releases, nothing prepared fans for the aural onslaught of 2001’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which pushed the boundaries of music production and defied genre lines all together. The band’s record label famously refused to release the album, while overwhelming fan support and critical adulation lead to a bidding war that netted Wilco a lucrative recording contract. Their next album A Ghost Is Born (2004) won a Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year. Following several critically acclaimed albums and core additions to the group, Wilco remains a vital and restlessly creative force in both their live concerts and their recorded output, which includes 2015’s secretly released Star Wars.

    Wilco Finally!

by DaveW on 2022-08-29Budweiser Stage - Toronto

I've been listening to Wilco for 20 years, but had never seen them live. I wasn't sure what to expect, but was not disappointed in the least. Early in the show, Jeff Tweedy said they were going to give us our money's worth, and they did (which is saying something with today's ticket prices). I was a little worried that the show might be very low key (it definitely wasn't) or include mostly songs off the most recent album at the expense of older favourites. Neither turned out to be the case. It was a rockin' affair with a perfect mix of fan favourites, deeper cuts and some really good new songs. All these guys can really play and enjoyed the long instrumental run-outs to several songs. The sound was fabulous where I was sitting (Section 103). As I suspect with most Wilco shows, the people around me seemed to know every word to every song. As an aside, I really like the Budweiser Stage as a venue. The freedom to grab some food and a beer and wander around makes you feel like you aren't in Ontario! It was a beautiful day to wander around meeting people while the opening acts were playing. Both opening acts were very good.

Jeff should go smooth on the doughtnuts but hey, doughnuts are so tasty. Wilco killed. One of the most underated band ever. Bieber, K Poop stars and Pitbull should listen to Wilco. M-Telus should be an illegal room name. All rooms should be called Metropolis. Wilco killed Love Wilco Love Jeff and the boys. Wilco killed. Long live Wilco.

Comments on Wilco show at Budweiser Stage

by Lou on 2022-08-22Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Wilco was great but I must say sound level is too high. Kathleen Edwards opened the show . Sound mix on her set was bad . Could not make out vocals and overall sound was too loud. Bahamas mix was better ...easier to make out vocals. Wilco had best sound mix but still too loud. We were in Row XX

Great performances by everyone. Wilco at their best sounding, tightest playing since I started watching them perform. Great show all round.

    Wilco 08/18 Budweiser Stage, Toronto

    by M. F. on 2022-08-22Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Not good! When we came through the gates we were told our 400 level seats had been "upgraded". All that meant was the event was undersold and 300 level seats were given out completely randomly. We could not sit in the seats we paid for and were forced to sit in a closer, but for us, far less desirable seat. This kind of treatment is why the airline industry has to have a passenger bill of rights. The same is needed for Ticketmaster and Live Nation. Sour taste. Will not do again any time soon.

    Great show

by Tom petty on 2022-08-21Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Fantastic show from a first class act. Only complaint was the back lighting from behind the stage that BLASTED extremely bright lights sporadically into the audience. On/off/on/off. Over and over again. Very annoying, but other than that the show was great. Poor choice of beverages in the facility, and why are there no drink holders in the seating areas??? At $175 a seat I expect at least a place to put my drink.

    Perfect Evening

by Pat on 2022-08-21Budweiser Stage - Toronto

From the comfort of the venue, to the quality of the sound and performers, everything about this evening was perfect. Vendors greeted myself and family with a smile all evening long, staff was very helpful. Lots to keep both parents and kids happy all evening long.

    Ashes of American dollars

by Ashes of American dollars on 2022-04-19United Palace - New York

I could not travel due bad Covid self-isolation timing, so I basically lost the tickets. Since none of the gigs were sold out, it would have been a nice gesture to allow for switching seats among dates. I would have been able to attend up from yesterday.

The Band was great as always ... but rushed

by Rickco on 2019-10-16Budweiser Stage - Toronto

Wilco is great ... I have seen them several times and they never disappoint. The show was at an outdoor venue and Wilco have typically been doing between 28-30 song sets. They did not get on stage until 9. The opening act was on for almost an hour. The timing seemed off and I think Jeff Tweedy was a bit displeased about the whole thing. He did not do a lot of crowd banter since he said "we don't have a lot of time". An indoor venue and an earlier start would have been better.

    BLOWN AWAY!

by timleyes on 2017-04-08Massey Hall - Toronto

I have never seen Wilco before last night but did have Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and did play it a lot in my old studio. I knew it was important to see them, especially at the legendary Massey Hall. I was blown away... it was like walking into a garden, from the opening gentle acoustic Normal American Kids to sonic blasts like Misunderstood and to moments where I swear I was transported to a mid 90's Nirvana jam. Such a smart evening of music. Cant wait until next time
