WILCO IN CONCERT:
Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”. Though ticket buyers never quite know what to expect from these innovative musical adventurers, they know they can count on Wilco to deliver a an electrifying, genre-defying concert experience every time they take the stage on tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Frontman Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco out of the ashes of his earlier alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, absorbing most of the lineup to release the new band’s 1995 debut A.M. The group quickly developed a reputation for incorporating experimental elements with their next two albums Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999). Despite those sonically ambitious releases, nothing prepared fans for the aural onslaught of 2001’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which pushed the boundaries of music production and defied genre lines all together. The band’s record label famously refused to release the album, while overwhelming fan support and critical adulation lead to a bidding war that netted Wilco a lucrative recording contract. Their next album A Ghost Is Born (2004) won a Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year. Following several critically acclaimed albums and core additions to the group, Wilco remains a vital and restlessly creative force in both their live concerts and their recorded output, which includes 2015’s secretly released Star Wars.
Such an amazing performance. Such passion! Incredibly talented!
I have seen Wilco many times, and many times at Massey Hall...they always put on such a great, tight show and last Thursday they did it again. How they play those complicated songs from Yankee Foxtrot and Ghost live is beyond me! So so tight and inventive and brilliant. And a gorgeous set to boot. The usual suspects were brilliant...Nels killing it again on Impossible Germany (and everything else), Glenn Kotche - a drummer in a class of his own - John Stirratt keeps a solid bass, Patrick Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen often unsung heroes but steady and critical to the band's sound. And Jeff...I can't say enough about his songwriting, his presence, his coolness, his respect for his band and the audience. And the fun he has every night.
ithursday night at massey hall was a once again incredible evening of music from one of the most underrated bands . unfortunately with so much sugar pop and rap music much of the rock music is under listened to and ignored. wilco should never be ignored. they are the one band i could listen to for hours live. even if i didn't know their new material. thursday night was no exception. the crowd on the other hand seemed "stunned" and not really taking in the greatness on stage as jeff tweedy had to ask if they were okay. what i observed was that most people were intently listening, which is rare at shows these days. finally towards the latter part of the show most were finally standing up and showing their sheer joy. their 28 song set lasted 2hours. they could have played longer in my opinion as they still had around 30 minutes before the curfew of 11 o'clock. but i guess i am greedy for tweedy and the greatness of this band. anyone who was on the fence about attending should fall off the fence and go next time. money well spent.
If you haven't been to a Wilco show, just go already!
Wilco wide varied and expansive catalogue makes for an interesting concert as Nels and Glenn stretch songs into extended jams which bring new life to songs. Jeff tweedy was talkative and humorous which is a joy to see. Wilco is not so quietly becoming a great jam band. One of the top 5 live acts around in my opinion
Wilco is one of those bands that is all about the music. No pandering or designer stage show. Just great music from a band of incredible musicians who care about the sound(s). Led by sometimes crusty Jeff, they can play it soft and sweet or hard and sonic. The variety of songs and sounds keeps me intrigued. They caught my attention 15 years ago and I'm still rapt.
I have listened to Wilco for years now and was never able to attend a live show. I was blown away, this band delivers. Jeff and Nils were amazing but the others were so tight and filled it all in as well as a studio sound. Highly reccomend
Went to two sold out shows. Both shows uniquely different set lists but equally outstanding. An extremely talented band... Very tight band, extremely talented musicians/artists. Totally unique in there own sound.... A must see live band. You won't be disappointed... They just keep getting better... Love the new and old Wilco.
Great show. The entire new album up front (that takes confidence). The crowd on its feet for the entire show. Wilco keeps getting better.
Played the new album front to back without interruption, then another two hours of solid material from the last decade or so. Only slight criticism is I would have loved to hear older stuff like Outta Sight Outta Mind and some Golden Smog, like Passenger Side and Pecan Pie.
What a show! Two hours and forty minutes of WOW! Their stated gap; was to "fill our ears with as much music as possible" and they succeeded. Thanks guys!
Truly an artist who grows better all the time. Yes I went to see Nick Lowe, the opening act. My only regret was that he wasn't the headlining act. Nick could play forever and I'd be happy.
They are just too good!! The songs played from the new album will definitely join all other masterpieces written by Jeff Tweedy!!!!
Great Show! The lighting was amazing! Wilco + Massey Hall = Great!!!
Wilco looked and sounded great in Toronto! I thought the show got off the a slow start but they really hit their stride about 3 - 4 songs in. Lots of great classics and promising new sounds. Loved it!
Saw Wilco on Friday. I really love the band's albums, especially Yankee and Sky. They are talented musicians with a great song base. What stops me rating them super high is that they seem to feel the need to end every song with a dissonant sequence that bridges to the next. For some songs, this fits really well. For others, they should leave some sound space...after each song, I'm thinking "Here we go again...random noise until the next real song starts." Truly, too self indulgent. Too bad, because they don't need to it. Mix it up a bit. They may be the American Radiohead...but at least Radiohead knows when a song can stand on it's own.
Wilco always comes to Toronto and provides a solid show. Keep coming back, and we will keep on showing up!
I consider Wilco to be the pinnacle of modern music. So a bad night with Wilco is beyond measure in comparison. When they are great, and Friday night at Massey Hall they were, they are beyond being beyond. It was a great performance, new songs weaved in with old to create a tower of menace and thoughtful power.
The amazing Wilco proved again why they are one of the best kept secrets in rock. They come across as the American alt version of Radiohead and it is just unfortunate that not enough people listen to good music these days. The sound the lighting and energy made for one of the best shows that will happen this year. All in all a great concert that will be remembered for quite a while.
From the opening song 'Wilco (The Song)', to the closer 'Walken', and the 20 something other songs in between, this was Wilco at their best. An absolutely smoking show from possibly the best live act out there! If you have the opportunity to see them, do not pass it up.
