Everything - music, food, vendors, volunteers, weather - all exceptional. The music lineups for day and night were superb. Hats off to the organizers for creating such a wonderful atmosphere and heartwarming experience. I'm not sure how you can repeat such a fantastic event but best of luck in your efforts.

Winnipeg Folk Festival - 40th Year as good as all

by PrairieLynn on 2013-07-17Winnipeg Folk Festival - Birds Hill Park - Winnipeg

A great lineup with a fine mix of styles and genres. The workshop lineup filled the days with old favourites and new discoveries and the great evening concerts ended days with twelve hours of wonderful music. As always the people and vibe were great.

    oh yes

by MicRosie on 2013-07-17Winnipeg Folk Festival - Birds Hill Park - Winnipeg

Previously I had attended with a day pass on two occasions. After over 20 years of saying I should go, I finally did the camping weekend. I did not have close friends going and without a love interest to share the experience with, I went on my own. I did not seek out acquaintances that might be going. I did not post on facebook that I'd be there. It was a great experience. I was free to be where I please when I pleased. Eat, sleep, etc when I wanted and everyone around me was wonderful - staff and fellow festival-goers. I would definitely go again - alone or with friend(s). I should have done it long ago and wish I had taken my kids (now 15 & 18) year after year starting when they were little. Maybe next time I will set up closer to the family area although the all-night party was great and honestly didn't keep me up when I really wanted to sleep. The drums were lulling. :) I especially enjoyed the day events for which you can have a greater appreciation when you are there for the duration as opposed to an evening or a single day pass. I took the time to prepare in advance and had a good idea of performers I wanted to take in. I can't wait until next year!!

I thought the event was awesome. The bands/singers were great. The array of food vendors was excellent. No shortage of toilets. All very clean with adequate tissue. The layout of event was well put together. One could see there was a lot of thought and effort put into this years folk festival. I loved people watching, the best thing was not seeing or hearing an cell phones. Well worth time time to go again. Can't wait till next year.

    Winnipeg Folk Festival

by abcdef12 on 2013-07-17Winnipeg Folk Festival - Birds Hill Park - Winnipeg

We like all the new changes. Very well organized. Our only complaint was to many singer songwriter's and not enough blues performers.

All the acts were incredible; camping there is amazing. When you camp out there, it gives you lots of time to do everything without being rushed, theres also a beach within walking distance for the really hot days.

highlights for me: serena ryder, in living color lead singer, the beautiful weather over the weekend. meeting new people and friends in the beer tent and at camping. dancing at the xavier rudd concert. why does FF bring in the same acts such as Kat Empire and Xavier Rudd. Kat Empire was so-so; are there no other big acts that FF could get with all the musicians and bands on the planet? A lot of the main stage bands on wed and thursday were a bit sleepy such as city and color, all their songs sound the same even though they are a well-known, popular band. None of the music blew me away the way that Niko Case did a few years back. The lead singer of In Living Color was the highlight, but the rain and running back to a wet camp was a damper, it would be convenient if there was a weather board for campers so we know to close up our tents and bring rain gear. On top of that, getting back into the camp that night was majorly backlogged which made us more wet. It's fairly easy to sneak in so people will sneak in despite security, We had 3 squatters at our site who we had kicked out because they were out of control and crazy. The festival is expensive so I understand why people sneak in. I don't mind as long as they are not dangerous and or crazy/unpleasant. It would be nice to have a big music board somewhere on the festival site detailing the acts of the day which would reduce the need to carry around a program. I found that I saw a lot of the same acts over and over again. There was a lot more walking involved with the new stages, which were beautiful sites, and also the new location of the food area.

    Love those Jams

by Jeffries on 2013-07-16Winnipeg Folk Festival - Birds Hill Park - Winnipeg

When Tinpan Orange and The Cat Empire joined Rich Aucoin in a reggae French version of Hotel California as a finale to their workshop it was pure heaven for the audience, and something close to it for the performers from all appearances.

    Feasted on Folk Fest Friday

by wacko on 2013-07-16Winnipeg Folk Festival - Birds Hill Park - Winnipeg

Great day for music lovers! Manitoba showcase of talent was terrific! Oh My Darling, Stan Rogers with violinist Dale Brown, Del Barber and JR Edmonds Band were amazingly talented. Danny Michel with the Garifuna Collective had a terrific afternoon concern. Seeing the Grand Dame of Canadian folk music, Sylvia Tyson, perform was an absolute treat. Loved Lyndi Ortega's evening performance on mainstage. There were no real food lines, so getting a meal was quick and tasty.

    Outstanding Evening

by aljud on 2013-07-15Winnipeg Folk Festival - Birds Hill Park - Winnipeg

We went to the Folk Festival for the first time in 20 years and had a fantastic time. This is a first class outdoor event. Excellent musicians, especially Serena Ryder, who absolutely rocked the house. We'll all be back next year thanks to the great music, lots of food options, a clean environment/ bathroom facilities, and the fun eclectic crowd.

    Folk Fest

by Vooden on 2012-07-17Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Always great and usaually worth 5 stars just for getting turned on to new music which is what it's all about. I fear though the WFF is starting to cater to the masses and the music that the masses think they want to hear. This is the antithesis of what the WFF is supposed to be. Don't be so concerned about getting the big names. Don't be so obsessed with big crowds and expansion. Too large of a crowd doesn't mean success nor does too long of a fest. Also do we really need all of those volunteers. I realize that this comment will be sacrilegious to many, but I talk to many who only volunteer because they get into the festival for free (along with free meals) even though they are very well off. I realize that many of the positions require special training and expertise and I realize there are many who can't afford regular entry (especially the youth who without regeneration the FF would die). But there are still many who don't fit this description and dare I say coast (You know who I'm talking about so don't deny it). Isn't the volunteer experience supposed to be for some sort of more altruistic reason. A lot of the volunteer bureacracy at the WFF is fraught with nepotism and favouritism and needs to be cleaned up. More of the credit for the success of the WFF has to be given to individual donors and the people who choose to "volunteer" their money to get in despite sitting behind volunteers who by "insider trading" have been able to get there before the rest of the gang. Long live the Wpg Folk Fest, but we should strive to make things better.

Great line up at Folk Festival this year

by Anitoba on 2012-07-13Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

They did a great job with the lineup this year. The only complaint I had this year was the way the Lil stage on the Prairie was affected by the music from the blue stem. Not fair for the smaller performers to be drowned out by the larger stages.. we need to have a better set up for the stage. Great job putting the whole event!

    Best Time Ever!

by Jeeny on 2012-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

This year, 2012, was my first time camping in the festival camp grounds and it was the best time of my life! I met so many super friendly, down-to-earth people. I really enjoyed how there were many different parties happening throughout the entire festival and in the camp grounds they were going at all hours of the 24 hour clock! Watching the sunset from main stage to all gathering on Pope's Hill watching the sunrise to watching the drumming circles or taking a well deserved nap in between to fire dancers and glow-stick outfits to hanging out in themed camp sites to playing life-size games, it was truly the most incredible experience.
