Love and Peace and the Whole Damn Thing!!

by Blortface on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

What can you say after you say K.D. Lang !! Well, you can say Del McCoury and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. What a rush--talk about getting the crowd in to it. Amazing. Great weather--good food --people getting together to listen to music and renewing old friendships. The crowds (especially Main Stage) should be reminded to take their visits and conversations away from those concentrating on the music. I would vote for a four day festival.

    Awesome

by diamondjewl on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

I go every year. Some years the music is better then others but the over all experience is the best and the music is always good (just lacking awesome at times!). The camping facilities are easy and wonderful. The food is not too badly priced and excellent. Relaxation is the name of the weekend. Just pull up a chair, find a shaded area and lay back and enjoy the sound of music. This year my complaints with the music was only at the main stage. That is just a small portion of the all over weekend musicians. I think everyone should go to this event!! Super amazing and relaxing.

    Folkin' fantastic.

by Raybay on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Folk fest in birds hill is always the time of my life! This year it was particularly good due to awesome weather! The talent was amazing. I am really not the kind of person who likes any and all music but I'm amazed that I loved it all yet it really is quite diverse in their own way. I guess the commonality is in the roots of the tunes, which is so fundamentally important to a festival such as this. The people behind the invites to the grouPs are doing a great job. Some obvious greats: m ward, blind pilot, Jeff tweedy. Some other stand outs: Dan mangin, trampled by turtles, Valerie June, kills sorrow. To name a mere few! All the days were great! I did not want it to end And I look forward to next year!

Folkfest is such an amazing event that has become a staple in not only my life but my friend's lives as well. It is a great place to connect to those you already know and make friends with people you have yet to know. The food selection is great, it definitely provides a lot of options and gives you the chance to never eat the same thing twice. I also enjoy that Folk Fest is the venue where I try some of these fine local restaurants for the first time, pushing me to try them when I get back to the city as well. The artists that play at the Folk Festival are fantastic. I not only feel as though the artists themselves are great but the new styles they bring to Manitoba are really enjoyable as well.

    First time exceeded expectations

by Jemplay on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

I had an amazing time at Folk Fest, the weather was perfect and I fell in love with several new artists. For those of you who think FF is just for old hippies, it is great for all ages, and is very family friendly. Wonderfully organized, clean, and very entertaining, I can't believe I've never been before (lived here my whole life and am 35) and can't wait to go back next year.

Folk Fest kicks again! (with caveats)

by 04S2K on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Everyone who was there & many who weren't have already heard what an absolutely amazing world-class event this is. This year, though, the frustration with camping entry on Wednesday, festival traffic & parking as well as horrendous line-ups for food (both back stage & on site) was loud & continuous. The Winnipeg Folk Festival is getting way too big for them to ignore this issue. I've been to this festival 30+ times & this is the FIRST time the I was frustrated enough to re-consider attending next year! (But that only lasted 'til I got to the head of whatever line I was in.)

    Folk Fest Fun!

by wpggrl on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Folk Festival delivered again this year. It's a fantastic place to take your child for a great musical experience. The food can be a little costly, but in the +33 sun, it was worth the money for a cherry lemonade and a salad. It's getting quite busy, and we had to miss a concert or two because we couldn't find shade (it was all taken up), but all in all, I'm glad I went and will go again.

    Well organized event

by bkhofner on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Experience at an outdoor music festival in this climate can be very influenced by how much the event was impacted by the elements: weather and mosquitoes. The weather was hot and I was glad that I didn't have problems finding covered areas for meals or breaks from the sun. Improved shade in the performance areas and children's sand area would be beneficial along with clearly identified places onsite to buy sunscreen. Mosquitoes were a non-issue. I attended the Sunday show with two young children and didn't see much music; the kids had lots to do and look at in the children's area so that ended up being almost the entire day and a fun time for them. They are definitely looking forward to going back next year and I'm sure they'll appreciate the music part eventually. We did see Beats Antique and Ganga Girl perform and that was a good workshop. I attended the Friday mainstage show on my own and was generally disappointed. KD Lang's set was fantastic but Lucinda Williams seemed very off for most of her set in her vocal delivery and focus and most other performances were forgettable. I find it personally frustrating every year to have only 10 to 15% of performers be local (excluding the children's tent, this number would drop further) and then find no shortage of cases where the talent from other places isn't as good as what we have in our own city.

    Winnipeg Folk Festival

by PrairieLynn on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Many years ago David Amram called the Winnipeg Folk Festival a "mental health spa", and he was so right. I continues to be one today. As the festival evolves some nice things are lost and some things greatly improved, All in all I can't imagine a summer without it.

    Wpg Folk Festival

by MMavis on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

    - enjoyed smaller music venues better than the main stage. However music was great overall. Food was better than in prior years. Thought the bus shuttle was a good idea. Do not think that at these prices that festival goers should have to pay $5 for a shower or have to even worse, set up their own in the middle of a field. This should be a free service. Where were the picnic tables for people that visited the food vendors? It is bloody awkward eating on a bench. Finally, the wait to get in the gate was ridiculous - waited for nearly 5 hours to get in, sitting in a field with the sun beating down - 30 deg. temperatures. Also if we are expected to do this, people need more than TWO porta potties that ran out of toilet paper just as I got there. I need not elaborate how embarrassing and inconvenient this was.

Where have all the hippies gone?

by Hethyoga on 2011-07-12Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

I've been attending the Winnipeg Folk Festival for 18 years now and this year saw a lot of changes. The artists like Blue Rodeo, KD Lang, and Tegan and Sara attracted the crowds which were then directed through the food line area to get to main stage. Did not like that the forest path was closed off and traffic did not flow well through the food area. The artists were great however and all and all it was a great time. Not many hippy sightings this year which was a bummer for me.

    K.D. Lang was AWESOME!!

by TobaGirl on 2011-07-11Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Friday's event was amazing! K.D. Lang, Fred Penner and the others made for a wonderful day! The food, the atmosphere, and the kiosks filled with unique gifts made for an unforgettable day. We thoroughly enjoyed it all. I hope to make it an annual event for me and my family. Blue Rodeo on Wednesday was also a show stopper. Great to see some top names in the music business. I hope the organizers continue to bring is big names. It would have been good to see a few more locals like Sierra Noble and international stars like Adele. There could also be more Aboriginal performers to add a more international appeal. We have lots of good local drummers, dancers and First Nations/Aboriginal singers like Don Amero, Jerry Sereda, Tracy Bone, J.C. Campbell.

The sounds mixing was really off at most of the stages, especially the bluestem and mainstage at night. For a folk music festival it is still quite pricey and could have expanded into more world music acts as in years past.
