About

The WWE is the world's largest wrestling promotion corporation. Founded by Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt in 1953 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation, the organization now hosts more than 500 events per year across the globe. In 1982, McMahon’s grandson Vincent K. McMahon bought Capitol Wrestling and was fundamental to turning the WWE into a widespread and enduring sports entertainment product.

Initially, McMahon built up the WWE roster with future superstars such as Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and Jesse Ventura and launched the organization’s annual marquee event, WrestleMania, in 1985. Over the years, WrestleMania has offered plenty of unforgettable moments like the Hulk Hogan-André the Giant championship match in 1987, the generation-shifting face-off between Bret Hart and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in 1997 and The Undertaker’s 21-year winning streak at the event. The WWE will celebrate the 40th annual WrestleMania in 2024.

By the late ’80s and early ’90s, there was a full roster of hardcore brawlers, including Shawn Michaels, Hart, Ric Flair and "Macho Man" Randy Savage, who were later joined by a new crop of “Attitude Era” stars such as Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H and Mankind as the organization grew into a touring juggernaut. Another infusion of talent joined the WWE during the late aughts and early ’10s, including John Cena, Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair, CM Punk, and Becky Lynch.

The WWE continued to reinvent itself as it created the separate Raw and SmackDown brands in 2002, launched various offshoot brands including the ECW and WWE NXT and introduced a 24/7 streaming network in 2014. The companies behind the WWE and mixed-martial arts promoter Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) merged into TKO Group Holdings in 2023.

  • Smackdown was amazing!!

by Serujuunin on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Smackdown in Edmonton was amazing, We had unforgettable seats and the action was always intense, waaaay better than watching it on television. After the show stopped taping, they gave us a bonus cage match that the rest of the WWE Universe didn't get to see! It was fantastic! I would definitely go again if the WWE comes around.

  • Smackdown/ECW Was Great!

by CurtisC on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

The show was pretty solid from start to finish. I would have liked to have seen a few more superstars like Rey Mysterio and Undertaker, but the performers did a very good job.

  • WWE Smackdown was amazing!

    by Blondi20 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first wwe event that I have attended. I thought the event was amazing. It was so much fun and entertaining. I loved seeing some of my favorite superstars and was very happy to see Jeff Hardy hold up the Canada flag at the end of the show. I would definately buy tickets again when WWE comes back to edmonton!

  • First time - totally amazing, EXCEPT....

    by soccerdude101 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

It was our first time at one of these events. My son and his friend were so excited to see all their favorite superstars. The only disappointing feature of the whole evening is when my son found out his favorite wrestler Rey Mysterio was not going to perform. He brought his mask, clothing and a huge sign that he made to cheer on Rey, but was almost to tears when he found out he wasn't there. In the future I wish it would be advertised better who would be coming to avoid disappointing these young fans. After all they are the ones that are getting us to buy these tickets!!!!

  • jeff hardy was awesome

    by pandabear9196 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

First of all I was a bit disappointed that a few top names were not there, namely R-Truth and Rey Mysterio. u see them on TV but when they came to Edmonton they were not there. This is suppose to be top name entertainment show and u give the people what and who they paid money to see. And Chris Jericho why did he not want to fight, they could of made a match for him too. Disappointed also that the previous night the superstar Sgt Slaughter mocked down the Canadians..Do we go to the USA and mock the Americans....NO NO I know this is all acting but think about it.....However seeing Jeff Hardy was awesome and my grandkids were so thrilled.

  • Smackdown was fun

by kidnixx on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The WWE really wants to entertain and they make you feel part of their show. Cheer and boo your favorites as loudly as you want. They have humor for kids and adults.

  • Smackdown/ECW was the Bomb!

by Josephina on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing, the pyro-technics were crazy good and the number of super-stars that were involved in the show were great performers. Would highly recommend this program to everyone and I am looking forward to their next Edmonton event, hopefully it wont be another four years.

  • WWE ECW/Smackdown

    by zman1 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Great event! Fun to watch! Best entertainment at Rexall in a long time!

  • Solid Show, Needed More Main Eventers!

by SmackdownFan on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Smackdown/ECW was a decent show, but could have been better with more MAIN EVENT Superstars like Rey Mysterio/Kane/Great Khali who were all absent from the show, which is odd because they were all at the previous Smackdown/ECW event in UNIONDALE, N.Y. and were expected to show up, plus I was highly anticipating to see them perform for the fans in EDMONTON since both Undertaker and Edge are absent from injuries which is UNDERSTANDABLE. But on a good note i did get to see superstars like Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, Chris Jericho, Big Show, John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, Christian and Cryme Tyme and the Non-Televised Steel Cage Match for the World Heavyweight Championship between CM Punk and Jeff Hardy was awesome but wished it could have lasted more than 5 minutes. But it was my first show and I am glad I got the experience.

by taker on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

enjoyed being at the wwe event. had good seats. lots going on. good entertainment for the money. a few dead spots at the commercials could have used some fill in entertainment but overall very satisfying and would attend again.

  • awesome

by jmdownie on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show. The crowd was great and not obnoxious and rowdy like at most concerts. The wrestlers were on their mark and it was fantastic!!!!

  • Finally, Smackdown has come back to Edmonton

  • WWE SMACKDOWN/ECW was unbelievably entertaining

by Ronx on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Back in 86 I went to watch Wrestling with the "big" names, Hulk, Ultimate Warrior, Andre and so many more icons. It was great then. My 14 year old is obsessed and wanted me to go with him but I really didn't want to go as this was an interest of my past and not so much now. Even though it is played in my house 24/7 I really did not think it was for me. WELL to my surprise, I enjoyed it beyond belief. The light show, the pyro the wrestlers & the crowd made the evening so enjoyable I would highly recommend it to many & even go back again. All in all I rate it about a 15 outta 10 :) Brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks to many.

  • WWE is good value

by Kent on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

I went with my son and I was pleased with our seats and the reasonable price. The show was long and we didn't say for the end. Door were late opening to the event and the concessions were all poorly staffed which made getting a pop almost impossible. The event itself was enjoyable.
