About

The WWE is the world's largest wrestling promotion corporation. Founded by Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt in 1953 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation, the organization now hosts more than 500 events per year across the globe. In 1982, McMahon’s grandson Vincent K. McMahon bought Capitol Wrestling and was fundamental to turning the WWE into a widespread and enduring sports entertainment product.

Initially, McMahon built up the WWE roster with future superstars such as Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and Jesse Ventura and launched the organization’s annual marquee event, WrestleMania, in 1985. Over the years, WrestleMania has offered plenty of unforgettable moments like the Hulk Hogan-André the Giant championship match in 1987, the generation-shifting face-off between Bret Hart and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in 1997 and The Undertaker’s 21-year winning streak at the event. The WWE will celebrate the 40th annual WrestleMania in 2024.

By the late ’80s and early ’90s, there was a full roster of hardcore brawlers, including Shawn Michaels, Hart, Ric Flair and "Macho Man" Randy Savage, who were later joined by a new crop of “Attitude Era” stars such as Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H and Mankind as the organization grew into a touring juggernaut. Another infusion of talent joined the WWE during the late aughts and early ’10s, including John Cena, Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair, CM Punk, and Becky Lynch.

The WWE continued to reinvent itself as it created the separate Raw and SmackDown brands in 2002, launched various offshoot brands including the ECW and WWE NXT and introduced a 24/7 streaming network in 2014. The companies behind the WWE and mixed-martial arts promoter Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) merged into TKO Group Holdings in 2023.

  • The Show's Good, but Live's Better!

    by Databoy2k on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

There is simply no better production value than the WWE in pro-wrestling. From the loudest, noisiest pyro to the most effective use of the true talent of their roster, the WWE is an excellent value. The Edmonton crowd was particularly into the entire event, which made it even more enjoyable. Some of the greatest superstars were there, and the night was truly fantastic. I honestly don't believe that I've had as much fun watching at home as I have had live, and can't wait for these guys to come back again. Wonderful show!

by SpazzCanada on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Smackdown was pretty good, glad the WWE has finally come back to Edmonton! A lot of kids in Rey Mysterio masks were disappointed that he wasn't there.

  • Smackdown was absolutely awesome!!!

by Tiggger on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

My boyfriend Shawn, his 13 year old daughter Kendra and myself went to Smackdown on Tuesday August 11 at the Rexall Place in Edmonton. I don't think that Smackdown is an event we'll ever forget and Jeff Hardy will be a name always remembered!! Awesome!!

  • Smackdown was the most entertaining

by Pancake on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

I'm not much for wrestling and on top of it i only knew the people from smackdown, but the show was good. I enjoyed the light shows put on when the wrestlers where entering. As well as the drama that always adds to a good show. I would recommend anyone with the slightest interest in wrestling to watch.

  • WWE was fanfrickentastick!

by CowgirlX on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The WWE put on an amazing show. There was lots of excitement and nonstop action. I spent $30 on my ticket and the show lasted for over 3 hours so I got my money's worth. Even for people who are not hard core wrestling fans it's still a great time. You can't help but get caught up in the excitement.

  • Full show

  • What a parent does for their kids!

by HhushH on 2009-08-12Pengrowth Saddledome - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I guess if you are a fan of WWE like my son is the overall rating would be a 5 Star, but not being a fan of WWE the best I could give is a 3 Star rating. My wife and I took my son and his best friend to this show and they had a blast, which is all that matters to me. My wife and I suffered being crammed in our seats like sardines for 2 and a half hours (very good view from our seats btw) with screaming fans all around us just to put a smile on our kids faces and make a birthday a memorable one.

  • Smackdown what a blast

    by Charlie74 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

I had never been to a live event for wrestling in my life. I took my son and I had a blast. I have been watching wrestling for 30 years and was so impressed. Glad it was reasonably priced and was so much fun. Some rowdies in the crowd but nothing too bad

  • WWE smackdown / ECW Red Deer

by NanChuck on 2009-08-12Enmax Centrium - Red DeerRating: 4 out of 5

This was my 1st time @ a live venue, It was great!!!! That was a great line-up of wrestlers, All that was missing were the pyrotecnics. Also if one more light would of been on over the ring ,so You could see them better. But other than that Wow! I lost my voice Teee, Heee.

  • better than expected

by ljkbach on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

  • WWE- Awesome

by Shellgra on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

There was 6 of us that went to WWE and we all thought it was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. My kids loved it they were screaming and booing....we had so much fun. It seemed that it only lasted for an hour because we were so wrapped up in it. It was so entertaining, way more than I could hope for. The tickets were for my 11 yr old son for his birthday, and he loved it. My 9 yr old daughter came with us, she watchs WWE a bit, but she was the one making the most noise.....cheering. Awesome event I would buy tickets again today for another show. Thanks, Shellgra

  • just so so

    by unclemike60 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

Most matches were predictable, to much advertiseing for future events, and too much talking and not enough wrestling,. Food and Drink prices were out of site and quite a rip off , eg. small bottle of coke $4.50 for a $1.50 bottle, this is price gougeing. all in all the fans were great , but I would not recommend to anyone as for the price of tickets , parking and food and drink was all way to high of price for what entertainment recieved!

  • Smackdown was awesome

    by Timbo3744 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

I Usually only ever watch raw, but Smackdown was really cool even though i didn't know about the rivalries or anything.

  • WWE ECW Smackdown 2009 Edmonton, Alberta

    by Goldleader7 on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

To begin my review, I am not a huge wrestling fan, in fact, I'm more of the old school wrestling, but I gotta say, this was such an entertaining event! I really enjoyed the way the crowd was pumped all evening and the amount of agility those guys have! At one point, Jeff Hardy did 2 matches back to back and didn't look like he was gonna break a sweat! But let's start at the beginning: The event started with the intro to the jig and man was it loud! I couldn't even hear myself think. Those pyro-technics were so intense you could feel it booming. They then started with ECW and it was entertaining none-the-less. I figured I would probably be bored during this time since I never knew the ECW stars but that soon turned me around when I saw the Dreamer vs. Regal match. Then went on to Smackdown, and did that turn out great. Again, didn't think I would know the stars and thought this would be boring. In fact, the one match that made my day was the Big Show vs. Cryme Time match. Made me cheer and laugh all through the match. Overall, the entire night was eventful and would be something I would come back to the next time they stop in town. The only regret I got is I wished we could have seen more superstars, but choosers can't be pleasers.

  • A good evening of wrestling

by patouimet on 2009-08-12Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

It's been awhile since WWE graced Edmonton with it's presence, and it certainly made it's impact felt. Having ECW for an hour, a superstars match, a smackdown event, and a bonus match was enjoyable. The only downside is the main canadian wrestler, Chris Jericho did not have an actual match, even though the crowd was hot for him for doing simply being a guest ring announcer.
