Since the very beginning, Xavier Rudd's ability to connect with people has been his most powerful gift. The more he has toured the world, the more hearts he has touched and the more of the world he has put back into his music. Now, fronting a band aptly named The United Nations, Xavier Rudd has assembled a lineup of musicians from around the world as a one-people musical force. Making their debut in 2015, Xavier Rudd And The United Nations finds the iconic Australian solo artist in full band mode for the first time in a long and successful career, and introduces new album Nanna to Xavier's diverse and acclaimed discography...
Enthralling audiences with his ability to wield so many instruments at once, Xavier's 2002 debut album, To Let, introduced a sound that was a mix of guitars, yidakis (didgeridoos), stomp box and percussion, blues harp and vocals. Something distinctly new, yet tied back through time to the spirit of our ancestors. With a sound established, Xavier's 2004 sophomore album, Solace, was testament to the power of his songwriting abilities. Solace debuted in the top 20 of the ARIA charts and was met as an instant classic; going platinum and earning Xavier two ARIA nominations, with three of its songs – Let Me Be, Shelter and Solace – voted into triple j's Hottest 100.
Only a year later, Xavier was receiving his third ARIA nomination, this time for third album Food In The Belly. Celebrated for Xavier's abilities to effortlessly weave genres together - from the reggae sway of The Mother, to the irresistible tribal jam of Manã - Food In The Belly impacted strongly in Australia and Europe, landing Xavier on the Dutch album charts for the first time. Xavier's gold-selling follow-up, White Moth, continued on this path of international success. Released in 2007 on Epitaph sister label ANTI-, White Moth reached #30 on the US Billboard charts and earned Xavier another ARIA nomination back home.
Nudging ahead of White Moth one spot to peak the ARIA charts at #5, 2008's Dark Shades Of Blue was Xavier's biggest musical departure, yet resulted in massive fan and critical acclaim. Gritty, dark and introspective, the album connected deeply with fans, and reintroduced Xavier as formidable lap steel player. 2010's Koonyum Sun - recorded as trio Xavier Rudd And Izintaba - was a return to lighter shades. Featuring a new sound courtesy of a collaboration with bassist Tio Moloantoa and percussionist Andile Nqubezelo - yet abundant in the blues'n'roots charm of his earliest work - Koonyum Sun brought Xavier Rudd full circle.
Debuting at #2 on the ARIA charts, Xavier's 2012 album Spirit Bird was the triumphant pinnacle of of his entire solo career – capturing the most beautiful aspects of his voice, his songs and his spirit. Led by the wonderfully delicate Follow The Sun, Spirit Bird saw Xavier Rudd yet again tour the world, bringing together old fans and new, regardless of their culture or country of origin. Now, this ability to connect is at the heart of Xavier Rudd And The United Nations – a band with a strong message of all people coming together around the globe to return to spirit, respect the ancient ways and protect the Earth and the very essence of creation.
Mixed by Errol Brown at Tuff Gong Studios, Nanna is Xavier's ninth studio album, but his first with Xavier Rudd And The United Nations... finding one of the great solo artists of our time fronting a full band with impeccable results. Once again diving into new musical waters while still holding true to the music in his heart, Xavier Rudd has added another remarkable milestone to his already epic journey, solidifying his place as one of Australia's greatest artists, activists and spirits.

Hey all, This was my first time seeing Xavier Live and let me tell you, it was an incredible experience. From the opening act, to the Mohawk representatives welcoming him to Niagara Falls and to the last words spoken from his mouth, Xavier and his friends shared with us their gifts, energies and visions to the fullest. Thank you! For The Futur We Hope! Peace, MABB
See him. You will have so much fun, and seeing a group have so much fun onstage is amazing. Bottom line: unforgettable and awesome.
Transported into a a spirit world moved by inspired music and fans in a total groove.
loved this concert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent performance!!
Xavier Rudd was amazing as always - he was so energetic and active, and his band was, as always, so brilliant. The venue was disappointing and I wouldn't want to go again unless it's an amazing artist (like Xavier is!!) - non alcoholic, small, muddy, and with really limited facilities. I would stand in the mud and watch Xavier in the rain - but this venue was small and disappointing.
What a great experience! Music was amazing, Xavier Rudd is incredibly talented, a great showman and actively recruits from the crowd! The young boy at the end was great and the entire crowd really got into it. Loved it and would go again!
What a spectacular outdoors show!!! Not even the rain could dampen the energy!! I will go any time Xavier Rudd and Izintaba come to BC. Purely captivating and creative group!
was a really good show, great venue, just thought it was a little short......but they're always short,i'd say 90% of people were into it moving around by the end of it, wish it woulda kept going but hey, all good things come to an end all to quickly.......
sooo much fun! Danced the whole show. He jammed out every song it was amazing
I was at the show last night, and I left with mixed feelings. I am not sure how well this is going to go over, but I really feel like I have to share my thoughts. I want to preface this review by giving a little bit of my Xavier Rudd history. I was introducted to Xavier by my brother right after Solace was released. My brother is a world traveler, and he had the very good fortune of being introduced to Xavier Rudd while spending some time in Australia. I was not keen on the sound right away, I will admit this, but it did grow on me. I could not help but feel happy after listening to the album, and some of the songs really made me want to get up and dance. I followed Xavier through all of his album releases, and trying to catch as many live shows as I could. I have only missed 2 shows in Vancouver since I started listening to him. My first show was when He was opening up for Michael Franti and Spearhead. This was an amazing experience, despite the fact that his set was very short. It was very simply Xavier on his pedestal, playing his music and engaging the crowd here and there. Tremendous experience, I left feeling awesome. I saw him again after this at the Orpheum I believe, and it was much the same. For those not from Vancouver, the venue was an old opera theatre. The acoustics were awesome, and again I was not disappointed. I caught another show again at the Orpheum, but this time things were slightly different. I think that this tour was for "White Moth," bit I may be mistaken on this. The difference with this show was that Xavier was touring with a drummer. It wasn't bad at all.. the drummer did not play on all songs, and when he did play he was not overpowering. The show was still all about Xavier Rudd and his magic, his ability to own the energy in the building and send it back to the people who were watching him perform. I remember leaving that night very happy. I missed the tour for "Darker Shades Of Blue," so I don't know what the concert experience was like. This brings us to last night. This was my first show ever at the Malkin Bowl, and I absolutely loved the venue. We were completely surrounded by big, old trees, and the entire viewing area was not very large. An outdoor concert that could still be intimate.. cool I thought. It was finally time for the show to start and Xavier, Andile, and Uncle Tio took the stage. They wasted no time and ripped immediately into some funky beats. The bass guitar was very heavy, and the drums were sharp. Make no mistake about it, these guys were able to whip the crowd into a frenzy fast. The pace that they set here was pretty much maintained for the entire show. There were very few slow parts, and all 3 guys seemed to be having fun on stage. They were all laughing and dancing and doing their own part. It was about 2 or 3 songs into the evening that it hit me that this show I was witnessing had lost something. I thought back to the earlier shows that I saw and I remembered what they were-- Xavier and his gear on stage. He played for us from his pedestal, and he sang for us from his heart. It was all him. He looked awkward and uncomfortable on stage but you could tell that he was still having fun despite this. He played the music for all of his songs on his own, and this was a sight to be seen. I remember staring in awe, absorbing the positive vibes that this man was sending my way. I compared this to what I was seeing last night. Xavier Rudd was standing in the middle of the stage at a mic stand playing his guitar. His pedestal was behind him, and he had a bass player and a drummer to his left. All 3 were both pouring their hearts into making music. It dawned on me at this point, that this was not the same intimate encounter that I was used to seeing, that I WANTED to see. This was a band playing for me, for us the group, at an outdoor venue. Xavier Rudd had become a front man for a band that played songs from their album and covered some of the songs from his earlier albums. I say that they covered the songs because they really didn't sound anything like I remembered them to. "Energy Song" was almost unrecognizable, and the band went into numerous lengthy jam sessions that almost seemed out of place. Xavier spent very little time on his pedestal, and the didgeridoo/harmonica/other instruments were not used a whole lot. I remember one point where Xavier had a distortion mic and he was hollering chants into for the crowd to repeat back to him. This seemed really out of place. They did not play very much of the older stuff, and like I mentioned above the songs they did play were not like I remembered them. The drums and bass did fit nicely with "Messages," but that was the only one that stuck out in my mind. I did enjoy the show last night, please don't think that I didn't. I was just kind of surprised by what I was seeing. Some may call it natural progression for an artist to get to this point, but I don't know that I agree. If someone told me years ago at my first Xavier Rudd show that he would be fronting a 3 piece band in 2010 I would have called them crazy. I will be watching and listening to where Xavier goes from here. If this 3 piece band is here for good, I am happy for all 3. I will continue to listen to the music as long as I dig it.
It's great to see a band that truly enjoys playing together and Xavier Rudd and Izintaba certainly do that. The Malkin Bowl is a wonderful venue and the concert was awesome. I'd say that I would probably have preferred seeing Xavier Rudd on his own - essentially the 'Quiet Spirit' cd that I love - but I suspect I'm the only one there who thought like that - and I am over 60 and most of his audience would be under 30!! :) I picked up on his music after working in Broken Hill, NSW and seeing a great dvd entitled 'Two Men in a Tinny' for which the music of 'Solace' provided much of the background. I'd certainly go and see him again - the guitar and didgeridoo combination is haunting and the enthusiasm of all three performers was infectious.
I was introduced to Xavier last year when he cam to Vancouver. That show was the best that I've ever witnessed which unfortunately has made everything I've seen since pale in comparison. This concert was great but not as dancy as the last one. Other than that it was a blast. He seemed to be having fun, smiling and dancing around the stage and the rain started at the perfect time just as the tempo of the music picked up. I would of course loved to see him play the didg more but when he did play he rocked. I plan to see him every time he comes to town and I suggest you do the same. What can I say the boys got talent.
Amazing show. Hippies danced barefoot in the mud and Xavier slid across the stage, barefoot on the rain splashed stage. Non-pretentious, loving crowd.
I have three of his cd's but was really good to see him live and see his talents on show.
Xavier Rudd was overly amazing and I would personally recommend one of his concerts to anyone who enjoys incredible music and top notch musicians.
Loved this performance! Great energy in the building. Xavier Rudd is my favorite artist.
Great venue. More bathrooms would have been nice. Fantastic performer.
Xavier Rudd puts on a fantastic show. Yesterday was the second time I have seen his concert and I must say he gets better and better every time. He has so much energy and love for his music. I recommend his show to anyone.
Just awsome!!!!!! Great show!!!!!! Amazing music!!!!!! Opening band was just as good as Xavier Rudd!!!!! Both an amazing show!!!!! Could have done without the rain but hey it's Vancouver!!!!!!!!
