Vancouver Whitecaps FC History
The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974 as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).
Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

Canadian Championships vs. York and they barely squeaked out at 2-1 Winc😱😱 TG we hung in there!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Family environment, host kind, all organized and clean!
Great atmosphere and exciting game to see. The tickets are good value. The beverages not so much!
Watched an exciting whitecaps game where they beat RSL in a last second penalty. First whitecaps game and best MLS venue I’ve been to so far. It’s impressive the first time you go in and you can see well. 24oz beer is over $17 before tax. So it’s like $20/beer or $11 for a tall can. A lot of concessions were small but short lines. Merch store was tiny and had limited options so I didn’t get anything
We had lots of fun during the game I just wish we were told from before that big bags will not be allowed indoor and that there is a 10 dollar charge to leave it outside.
My experience at the Vancouver Whitecaps game was...... Worth it. I took my girlfriend to her first canadian soccer game. She is from Argentina, and KNOWS "Football" (as the REST of the world calls it) The Caps came to PLAY, against a highly ranked team and play.... They..... Did! I enjoy sitting mid field, lower bowl because i feel like royalty. The atmosphere is one of, sportsmanship AND excitement. Safety and comfort are TOP priorities. Thank you team, for the irreplacable experience. See you in the playoffs
I bought tickets really easy in Ticketmster, and same day game my experience inside BC Place was amazing, food, drinks, and a really good game.
Slow first half completed compensated for by one of the most thrilling second halves I've ever seen. Wowzers! Great venue, great crowd, great fun!
It was a fun time at the Whitecaps game. Our seats were good. The food was good. Coming in and going out was quick and easy.
Such a wonderful experience for my son. We got to sit close to the team, players waved at us. My son was in awe the entire time. Thank you so mucb for this experience. We travelled 3000km for the game!
Although we didn't get the win, the game was a great time. The fans down in the South end are a riot. Only downside was the incredibly over-priced beers. 20+ dollars for a single beer is highway robbery.
I’m a fairly recent Whitecap fan (5 yrs) having been a Canucks or BC Lion faithful for over 30 years. I can say with complete confidence that Whitecaps games are where it’s at! The fan base is passionate, the crowd is energetic and it’s all organic. You don’t need a scoreboard to tell you when to applaud or to ask you to make noise. For those that say the games are slow I’d say the opposite. It’s 90 minutes of non stop action and the game I am reviewing was a 0 - 0 tie! Compare that to the previously mentioned big 2 where for every minute of action there’s 2 minutes of nothing going on at all. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a loyal fan and will continue supporting all teams but from now on the Whitecaps get an equal share of my loyalty.
The lineup system outside BC Place was very confusing. Security guards were not much help directing people, and checking a bag was a nightmare. Lined up in one line for a long time then a security guard told us line up at gate H for bags, so we line up at gate H and after a long time and moving up to almost at the doors another security told us to go to the separate lineup BESIDE gate H to check a bag we had, and it costs $10 to check a bag which is ridiculous gouging. 3 separate lineups so we wasted around half an hour in different lines. Even people with small bags were told to check bags and lots of people were upset at the whole confusing process. And the Ticketmaster ticket fees and surcharges are ridiculous. 1/5 stars for Ticketmaster themselves. They get rid of the ridiculous ‘convenience’ fee for using tickets on your phone but they just renamed the fee. Fees on top of fees. Fans are always getting gouged and charged for every little thing. Prices for food and drink at BC Place are insanely high. The soccer match itself was sub-par. Probably won’t go back here for a long time. Wasn’t impressed.
The Caps put on a fantastic show, the stadium was electric and my son loved his first major league event!
Enjoyed everything about my first MLS game. Just wish the Whitecaps could have played a little bit better.
Cool stadium. Organised. Great game and wonderful family time.
Was a great first experience & I’ll be back to enjoy more games. Loved my seats & the atmosphere was fantastic. Great game too!
BC Place is a bad venue for soccer. Boring game with dead atmosphere. Wouldn’t go again.
While recognizing that this was just an intra-squad game (with Team A vs Team B), it was disappointing to have seen Team A only score one goal against a much inferior opponent. Team B did spend most of its time defending however; Team A could not find a way to break down the defence.
