Vancouver Whitecaps FC History
The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974 as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).
Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

We were so excited to be part of the Inaugural Game. The game itself was very entertaining, and the fan support UNBELIEVABLE!
This is something we have been missing in this town since the NASL left in 1984. It's great that top level soccer is back and what a great day it was at Empire withthe sun shining, the Whitecaps filling the net and getting a win. A great script for Bobby Lenarduzzi and his organization on opening day in the MLS.
The game was unbelievable. If you can, sit with the hardcore supporters. You'll be standing the entire game, but the atmosphere is wonderful. Not a good section for kids, but it was an unbelievable time.
The skill level of the whitecaps is miles above what it was only 3 years ago. The fans were just incredible, and everyone was in a fun, happy mood. The stadium was great for a temporary building. The only drawbacks were the beer and bathroom lineups were far too long, something that could be very easily remedied.
Fantastic atmosphere. Great start to Vancouver's MLS campaign.
First class. The Whitecaps have the skills to play in the MSL. Empire Field has a wonderful atmosphere - much like the old days of the original Whitecaps and the Lions. My only complaint is that the view from some seats is partially obscured by posts and the seating diagrams do not disclose where the posts are.
Big sports fan. Watch Canucks regularly, Lions frequently. This was the best sporting event I've seen in a long time. If you like being involved in the action instead of sitting around, this is for you. If you want to just sit there, I guess you could go, but you might be the minority. amazing. . .
It was an amazing game and had a great atmosphere. The only thing was they had a poor layout design for food, beer, merchandise and the washrooms.
Great first experience for the first game of the inaugural season of the Whitecaps! The fans around us were pretty good and we got to see all of the players close up as we were sitting right above the players entrance. There is a good view of the replay screen as well as the mountains in the background.
Great day, great game, great atmosphere! Can't wait for the games in the summer. Nothing better than an early evening summer game. Need more beer and popcorn vendors in the stands. Only saw one near the end of the game.
The game was amazing, the crowd was great and the Whitecaps look like they are on the way to being a real first class organization from top to bottom. I was excited about getting a MLS team before; I'm even more excited about it now. It's not because the Whitecaps won, it's that the crowd and game were entertaining all around. My only issue, and the reason for the four stars instead of five is the facilities around Empire Field. It's a temporary stadium so everything will be fine when they move to BC Place but getting in an out is very crowded, there are not enough toilets and the lines for food at the limited number of stands are long and slow. What would help a lot is to have more food vendors working through the stands.
Absolutely fantastic! A great game! Beautiful day! Great atmosphere and fan support! I drove from the Okanagan and spent over $150 to see this game and I'm glad I did. Well done Whitecaps and all the best for the rest of the season. I'll be cheering you on. Thanks!
The weather was perfect, the game was well played and the fans were excited. Everything came together for an amazing day of soccer and a great way to kick off the MLS season in Vancouver.
Best atmosphere I have experienced at a sporting even in a long time. Great game, the Whitecaps will do well this season with excellent management and a team that will keep improving. Expect more sell-outs - I can't wait until they move into BC Place!!
One of the top sporting moments in Vancouver over the last 5 years. The crowd was amazing and the game was even better. I hope they can continue to pack the stadium. What an amazing venue with views of the North Shore mountains!
Great event, even better game. Weather turned out great and we won, how could it get better? I think watching at Empire stadium will be better than at BC place. It seems like the perfect venue.
amazing crowd amazing game amazing atmosphere glad high level soccer is back in the city and was the perfect opening game. couldnt have done anything to make it more enjoyable (other than more washrooms..... the line-ups were huge!)
Exciting tie game. I was fascinated by the skill demonstrated by the Whitecaps team. A fun day at Swangard. No better place to be on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
... but it would've been nice to know that our seats were not in the covered area (we were in section K). Had we known, we would have brought an umbrella or at least some towels to sit on as the benches were soaking wet when we arrived. Live and learn!
While the game ended in a tie with some questionable officiating, it was a fantastic experience. Very well organized and super easy to pick up the tickets!
