It was a full house for the Ben Harper show in Montreal at the Metropolis and the crowd was into it from the moment the band walked on the stage. Ben is always so humble and at times the cheering was so intense throughout the night that he would graciously thank us and looked overwhelmed at times, but that's Ben. I've never seen him call it in, he's so real and appears to genuinly love what he's doing.
I don't know if he mixes up his setlists each night, but I thought it was very cool that this shows setlist was different from the Ottawa set from this summer. I got to see him twice in 5 months and see two very different shows in two completely different atmospheres. A headlining festival to a club.
I was at the show with a couple of my Pearl Jam buddies and the first song, Glory and Consequences, they incorporated Pearl Jam's Jeremy into the song which was such a cool coincidence for us and the song was awesome. They jammed so hard on so many songs, it was very intense. During the acoustic songs you could hear the crowd singing along to every word and when Ben stood on the edge of the stage to sing sans mic for a verse, the crowd went quiet out of respect and admiration.
We were lucky enough to get two new songs...newer than what's on their latest album, Give Till It's Gone. Masterpiece was a nice acoustic sweet love song. Then Ben told us how it's unusual to end a set with a new song written a few months before, but that they felt it just fit. He said it was called, Better Than I Deserve, which he said that's how he felt about us. He asked us if we could help them out with a line and he taught us our part to sing which was, "ohhh ohhh ohhh, you're better than I deserve". He was right, the song totally fit as a closer and everyone sang and rocked out...the band ends the song and starts waving their goodbyes getting ready to leave the stage and the crowd starts up the verse again. At first you could just make it out below the crowd cheering and clapping, but then it kept building until the whole place was singing, "ohhh ohhh ohhh, you're better than I deserve", the feeling is totally mutual Ben. I left that show so happy.
Unfortunately I got there a little too late to get a good taste of the opening band, Montreal's own The Barr Brothers, but I got to hear a few songs and I liked them enough to check them out further.
