    Simply Amazing!

by FromLillithsWomb on 2010-11-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I have always been a fan of Rufus Wainwright and was expecting him to be really good live but I wasn't prepared to be so blown away. His voice and piano playing was breath-taking. He was perfect throughout the whole show. Absolute beauty in the first half and charming and entertaining in the second half. It was also quite emotional in the first-half when what some people mistake as self-importance in asking that no-one applaud, is really just his heart-break over the loss of his mother. That is after-all what the album he is touring is about.

    Rufus Wainwright is incredible!!!

Perfect pitch and amazing range, excellent songwriter, unforgettable voice and I like it that he is not afraid to be himself. The first half was an unexpected pleasure and really showcases the talent of this man! What a way to honour his mother...

    Rufus Wainwright

Teddy Thompson was good singer but kind of a lame opening act. Didn't know what to say, looked awkward on stage. He kept looking at the time on his i-Pod, maybe it was past his bed time. First part of Rufus W's show was extremely dark & depressing. we were asked not to clap, I didn't want to but I only clapped because it was over! - second part, much better & lively. He had good interaction with the crowd.

    Rufus Wainwright

by Janer on 2010-11-29Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Rufus Wainwright !! One terrific evening. Opening with Teddy Thompson was incredible. I had never heard of him until reading up on him on the net. Incredible talent and a wicked sense of humour. Rufus's first set was all absorbing. The music, the screen with the eyes and his incredible voice ... simply breath taking. I was totally exhausted after it but at the same time inspired. Set two....Rufus raw. At his best. Enjoy his entire stage presence. As a great fan of his mother and Ann....the spirit lives on.

The concert did not meet my expectations. Truthfully I didn't enjoy the first set as it was slow and not interactive. I preferred the second set when Rufus was conversing with the crowd and the music was a bit more upbeat.

    great pianist, thats all

by kevyroy on 2010-11-29Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I dunno, I wasn't expecting this performance I guess. The first part of the performance was weird. Creepy entry, "visuals" that consisted of eye's plastered in black makeup winking on a big screen. Rufus looked like a cross between Edward Scissor hands and the guy from Rocky Horror Picture Show. And what's with no clapping. The guy is an amazing pianist, but the lyrics to his songs, puzzling and lacking. I hope the second part of the show was better, we left at the intermission.

Great concert. Only problem is that it was too short. I could have listened to both Rufus and Teddy for hours longer. Great show.

this show was soooo weird. he didn't want anyone applauding after his songs, which was super awkward, and his music was not at all like what i enjoy of his. i was not alone when i left at intermission.

    Loved the variety!

by SCMAC on 2010-11-29The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

Several people that I spoke to mentioned that they didn't enjoy the first part of the performance, but I did. Rufus' expression about his mother's death reminded me that grief is a solitary experience, and there's no rules or time line on it. The eyes were a bit disconcerting, but on the other hand I think holding someone's gaze and looking into another person's soul, is just that. The second part of the performance provided the comic relief and melody that I think many were looking for. I have since gone looking for some of the pieces Rufus played, and downloaded them onto my ipod, so that I can listen while driving up to Whistler this winter. Great road music, because the lyrics are powerful and the music is transforming. My favourite was the Walking Song!

An artist has come full circle

by mattyprez on 2010-11-28The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

Rufus blew me away last night. After watching him grow as an artist for over 10 years he has finally come full circle. The performance of 'Lulu' was technically impressive and one of the most intense emotional performance I have experienced as an audience member. His 2nd set (a bit of a career retrospective) was a lovely treat. He has never sounded so solid, confident and passionate. There was a genuine connection between him and the audience and the whole experience was absolutely moving. The final encore was perfection - a nostalgic 'Poses' followed by a very powerful solo rendition of 'Going to a Town' and finally the lovely 'Walking Song' performed as a tribute to it's songwriter - the late Kate McGariggle, Rufus' mother.

    One of Rufus' Best!

by DLES on 2010-06-23Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I was so happy when I got tickets for this concert, after the first show was nearly sold out. I hadn't seen Rufus in 2 years, and I couldn't wait to hear him sing live once more. Rufus did not dissapoint. The first half of the show had a more serious tone, and featured all of the songs from Rufus' new album. The second half was a lot more fun and lively, and featured many of his greatest hits. It was a wonderful night and I can't wait to see Rufus again.

    Terrible acoustics

by Anonymous on 2010-06-22Elgin Theatre - Toronto

My sister and I were very disappointed with the concert. We could not make out the words Rufus was singing due to the poor acoustics in the concert hall. Because the lyrics are such an important part of Rufus' music this was a severe impediment to enjoyment of the concert. We did enjoy his skill on the piano but the piano was way too loud and drowned out the songs at least from the perspective of where we were sitting, near the back of the orchestra section. We were able to hear better during the second half but even then it was difficult.

    Rufus was intense

by Shelsey on 2010-06-21Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Rufus - Songs for Lulu were very moving and intense. The entrance and exit perhaps somewhat over the top. I admire the songwriting and movng lyrics. Time to move on and lighten up. The second half was performed magnificently. Very enjoyable

    Rufus at the Elgin, Toronto

    by Mario168 on 2010-06-20Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Rufus is obviously gifted as a songwriter/composer, very talented as a musician and technically proficient. What then explains the self indulgent gloominess of the 1st half of the show? Yes, I understand that recent life events have taken their toll. But the cathartic nature of the compositions do not make them "art". Rufus, you need a musical director on these, or at least some constructive criticism. That said, there were still a number of fine musical moments in the first half, and the "operatic" nature of the work did have a surreal, otherworldly fee. The 2nd half of the show was drawn from his first four albums and much more satisfying for the audience as far as I could tell. Rufus was upbeat and charming, and superbly presented his past "hits". The 2nd half was a great live show. I can only hope that Rufus evolves past the themes of his last two albums. It's not that they lack musical interest or technical proficiency; simply that the focus of his efforts do not highlight what a talented artist he is.
