Rufus Wainwright, June 17 2010, Toronto

by MikeM on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

It was a excellent concert. His musical and artistic brilliance was on unleashed on the audience. He is clearly the most talented artist of the era. He reminds me a great deal of Mozart. It was a performance I will not soon forget.

    Rufus was awesome!

by Roxabee on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

It was a bit of a bizarre experience since I didn't realize he was doing a "Performance Piece". But once I got past the weird factor, it was really really awesome.

    Wonderful!

    by bigticket2 on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I had never seen Rufus Wainwright in concert before Thursday and am not familiar with his music other than his newest work but despite that, I was thrilled with his eclectic performance. His first "act" was a terrific but sombre piece of performance art and in the second act, he was the consummate performer, chatting with the audience with surprising sincerity. I love his voice!

    Hang in

by Pencilcase on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

If you like any of Rufus Wainwright's work, hang in. A career is a journey with many detours all of which contribute to what is yet to come. Not everybody goes public with these details so we are fortunate to follow his route. He's not pretending to be humble and that's okay with me. He's very talented, he's done some music that I love and some but I don't quite get. He wrote an opera which was disappointingly traditional and accomplished. But hey, he wrote an opera with a beautiful score, an overly simplistic storyline and ridiculously stilted words but, he made some beautiful music there. So the concert was edgier than the Opera, I'm sure all this will melt together en route. If you loved his performance that's great, if you didn't, hang in.

    Amazing as always

by Anonymous on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I saw Rufus Wainwright at the Elgin Theatre in toronto and it was incredible. I was able to get pre-sale tickets and ended up front row centre. Rufus never puts on a bad show ( this was my 5th concert- and I also saw his opera Prima Donna which was great ) Overall the night couldn't have been better.

Rufus - 1/2 Great, 1/2 Not so Great

by Dongat on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I am a HUGE Rufus fan, and the idea behind going to a concert is being able to demonstrate your enthusiasm by applause, so I found the first half extremely frustrating because we weren't allowed to applaud. If anything, a live playing of his first CD requires a complement of some liveliness as it is rather sad music. The march in and out and the blinking eye was just uncomfortable - I can't see how any non-Rufus fan would be transformed into a fan by the first half. However, the 2nd half was the Rufus we love. Lots of banter, upbeat tunes and MAGNIFICENT piano playing/singing. The musical genius is all there. I left the concert with tears in my eyes - what a beautiful tribute song to his mom at the end. Still a HUGE fan!

    What a waste

by BrandonFandom on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I had high expectations about that show but ended up being quite disappointed. The show was in 2 parts. You know it's going to be different when the announcer advise you that the artist have requested that applause be kept until he leaves the stage. CRAP! It was self-indulgent, boring, an experience in cacophony at best. This was the kind of show where the artist plays for himself without giving a damn about the audience. The 2nd part was slightly better but once again, he played for himself, not reaching the audience. Too bad Rufus but please... there's an audience out there... Pay attention

    No Clapping Deserved

by goodmusiclover on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

In the introduction we were told not to clap throughout the first set until Rufus had left the stage, that even his exit was part of the performance. This was the worst concert of any kind I have ever gone to. It was just one long monotonous song or maybe two long boring monotonous songs. As I listened to the first song I thought perhaps we'd get all the teen angst out of the way and then get some passon, melody and story in the next song. Not so. I tried to be facinated by the background visual - it was as boring, repetitive and creepy as the vocals. Rufus was pretentious, self-absorbed and self-indulgent. We could not take a chance on maintaining our sanity and stay for the second set. There was no need to tell us not to clap.

    OMG Wonderful!

    by PennyP2 on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The first half - not so much for me, brilliant, but not my favourite part ...... BUT..... from the moment he came out on stage after the intermission, until he left after the second long standing 'O', he was great. He talked to us, laughed with us, shared his life with us, started over when he made a mistake and laughed about it, entertained us with all our favourites, made us cry, made us laugh. He came back out after the first standing 'O' and sang not just one but maybe 4 more and gladly! He misses Kate so much and wasn't afraid to say so and talk about her, in words and in song. He is a wonderful human being and oh so talented - I LOVED THIS SHOW!

    Rufus on Top

    by woodman13 on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

First time I saw Rufus was on the Bravo Live at the Rehearsal Hall tv show. I knew right away I had to see him live. He blew the audience away. It was like 2 shows in one. The first half spooky and deep. Loved it. The second half a lot of fun. He even had a sense of humour about the first half. Would see him again.

    Rufus Wainwright

by Espionage on 2010-06-18Elgin Theatre - Toronto

First half was self-indulgent, syrupy and sappy. Second half ok.Rufus should try harder to be humble and stop being a name-dropper

    I Want to go again

by kenjio on 2010-06-16Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Amazing. This guy is incredibly talented. Its amazing how dead on his songs are to the album versions (the ones that he remembers, haha). He didn't play nearly all of the songs that I wanted to hear, but it was still and I am really looking forward to the next time he comes to Toronto (if I can get a ticket, I will go again on June 17th).

    Unusual but Great

by gets on 2010-06-16Elgin Theatre - Toronto

We were told not to clap for the first hour of the perfomance because Rufus was setting a mood. He did. His piano playing reflected the mood of the words of his songs about the death of his mother. He was very successful. The audience around me were fascinated by his presentation and at the end of the first hour he got a stanging ovation. The second hald of the performance were songs that were familiar to his fans and was apppreciated by his three standing ovations. If you have never seen him this is the perfomance to see.

    Rufus Wainright was very good!!

by Yogaleela on 2010-06-16Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I love Rufus! Anything he does is fine by me. The boy/man is VERY creative! He is completely connected with himself, his inners and outers. He lives, breaths, eats and sleeps his music and art, overall! He relates very well with his audience, is very friendly, grateful for their presence, and does not take himself too seriously even though he can joke about how much the reviews affect him. He is very sensitive, of course, and this is very much part of his art/act/therapy, all in one. His music is very good but also very sad at times. His sadness is transparent. His music is also relaxing at times (first part of he show). The eyes were amazing, interesting, and at times, scary in their expressiveness and repetition. They looked like animals at times, retreating into their holes deep in the ground or just beginning to open / reveal themselves to the world. I liked and felt the tear in the last eye. I am glad I got to see Rufus. I feel badly that i forgot my camera and binoculars though. And I would have loved to see him up close and personal, too, to tell him how much I like and love him! Go Rufus! We love you!!!

    What a voice!

by momster on 2010-06-16Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Rufus was his usual amazing self last night! I must admit, the first half "art session" was a bit odd at first, but I enjoyed it! The second half of the show was the Rufus we've all come to know and love. Between his beautiful songs, he entertained the audience as if we were all seated in his living room sipping drinks with him. Rufus is not your typical super star - he doesn't seem to take himself very seriously and just entertained us. It was a truly enjoyable night! Highly recommended! Thank you, Rufus!

The FAMOUS RUFUS WAINWRIGHT VALENTINE'S TOUR

by Lady112 on 2010-02-13Bardavon Opera House - Poughkeepsie

For his last shows in this kind of set, a man, his piano and his guitar, Rufus Wainwright did it right to the point. Charming, joking, relax with his mariacchi pants, he did the first song with courage. It is Beauty Mark, a song he wrote a long time ago about his mother who just died on mid-january. The audience exploded in applause , in gratitude. The tone is done for the evening, a singer with a magnificent talent and a public in love with him.
