Rufus Wainwright, Dec 4th,@ Massey Hall

    by Gman2 on 2010-12-06Massey Hall - Toronto

Show was great! Performance was incredible. His voice was right on, and the overall entertainment was awesome. However... I've seen Rufus at Massey Hall with the whole 7-8-piece band, and I prefer him with the whole band. I've seen him 5 times now.

    Memorable

by jrockd on 2010-12-06Massey Hall - Toronto

As always Rufus delivers. It seemed to me that even though he was tired I thought his delivery was even better than the summer performance. Did not want him to stop singing. He said he will be back and I will be there also.

    Mostly a great show

    by Cosmo43 on 2010-12-06Massey Hall - Toronto

A very good show in all, but I really could have done without the diva that came on after Teddy Thompson and before the Rufus Wainwright that closed the show. Opener Teddy Thompson is a genuine talent in his own right and should be performing an entire show by himself. After a too short 6 song set, he left the stage at which time the lights dimmed and an over the top Maria Callas- like diva dressed to the nines took to the stage. When she sat down at the piano and started to sing, she sounded an awful lot like Rufus Wainwright. It was interesting, but I was a bit worn down after hearing 10 songs in a row that didn't seem to vary much. And being asked not to clap inbetween songs left some awkward silent moments.Truth be told, the clapping would have helped to keep me from dozing off. But once that was over the real Rufus came out and did a great job of helping me to forget all that. Highlights for me were bringing Teddy Thompson back out to join him on The Maker Makes as well as an excellent rendition of Leonard Cohen's classic Hallelujah.

Rufus is an amazing performer, not only is his audience enjoying his show but Rufus seems to thoroughly enjoy the act of performing. he is a master on the piano, i could listen to him non stop. Massey Hall is an excellent venue for Rufus, although i would love to see him at Hamilton Place. for once i truly received my money's worth. a big THANK YOU RUFUS!!! a fabulous evening!

I knew I was in for something special with Rufus's concert. However, I was not prepared for the intensity of emotion. Unbelievable . . . I felt like I was transported to a new part of the world. Melancholy, beautiful sadness. I feel fortunate to have experienced this live performance. I will never forget it. Please come to Winnipeg again. What a bonus to hear Teddy Thompson, fantastic.

This was by far one of the best concerts I have EVER been to. Rufus is a phenomenal performer and such an entertainer. I definitely think that I got my ticket's worth and would go see him again in a heart beat.

    Stunning, Intense and Touching.......that's Rufus

by HorseGal on 2010-12-03Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

It is rare that a relatively new artist and performer can capture the attention and imagination of an audience as thoroughly as Rufus Wainwright did in Winnipeg on December 1st 2010. The requiem mass in the first half was heart rending and raw; followed by the songs he has made us love him for, in the last few years. His spunk and audacity is by turns touching, surprising and refreshing. I felt proud that once again Canada has turned out a world class performance artist who is fearless in his interpretations and presentation. Gobsmacked!

    Rufus is forever fabulous....

by LimeGirl on 2010-12-01The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - Vancouver

The guest, Teddy Thompson, performed beautifully despite a chorus mixup, and I generally enjoyed his music. Rufus' first act was painfully slow. My boyfriend fell asleep. And I found it difficult to like the big single eye with fake lashes dipped in black grease. I still don't understand the symbolism behind it. The second act, however, was everything i knew Rufus Wainwright could offer. It was nice, perky, powerful and soulful. His tempo was somewhat faster than his record songs. For example, for his song "The Maker Makes" Rufus performed it slightly faster than the record, which stole some of the feeling from the song. Nonetheless, I loved every single one of the songs Rufus sang on the second act. I found him to be amazing to perform an extra 2 to 3 songs after the concert was "over". He made me really happy, I had an amazing time and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have attended one of his perfo

    Rufus and Teddy were great.

by grannyyoung on 2010-12-01Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Teddy opened, and sang a half hour set, some from his new album Bella. He sounded great. Audience liked him. My fave was "Home" from his new album I saw the Rufus show already in Toronto. His voice was great. He did make a couple of mistakes but nothing major in the Lulu set. I do have this album and feel it was advantageous to have listened to it before going to the show. Rufus' second half were songs from his previous albums. He wasn't as chatty in Edmonton as he usually is. He did flub the lyrics a couple of times(Hallelujah!!!!!!) but again it was nothing major. His voice was terrific! His duet "The Maker Makes" with Teddy was beautiful! As was Hallelujah. After the show, he was available at the stage door to meet, greet, sign stuff and get photos with his fans!!!!! Love ya Rufus!!!!

    I didn't get it

by Parallel on 2010-12-01Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I had read the reviews online, and knew the 2nd half was much lighter. But by the intermission, I couldn't stand any more and wasn't the only one that left. H-E-A-V-Y... and monotonous. Some even left DURING the first 1/2. It's all Rufus, who I love, and if I had heard any small 5 second snippet I would have thought how great it would be. But an hour's worth? Of heavy, never-ending sameness? No applause. No noise. Brilliant piano playing, but just too.... introspective. Teddy Thompson as the opening act was awesome - very enjoyable. Rufus? I wish he had let us in a little more.

We Wanted to Leave After 10 Minutes

by Anonymous on 2010-11-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Worse Concert I have ever seen. His music is depressing and monotonous. We wanted to leave during the first act but convinced ourselves it would be better after the intermission. It was better, but not much. He has a great voice, excellent piano player but he should really play other composers music, not his own.

    masterful

by sufur on 2010-11-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Rufus' lyrics are clearer to follow on his recordings but it is pretty special to hear the man sing and perform with only his piano playing accompanying him. You get all of what he is - the personal pain, the politics and the amazing musicality. He's unique and maybe not for everyone - but if you like his music the show is perfect to attend.

    Rufus Wainwright is simply extraordinary!!

by prairiegrrl on 2010-11-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Rufus is a phenomenal musician, who filled the Jubilee with his unique and wonderful voice and lyrics. He took the entire audience with him along a very personal journey, that ranged in intensity. The first half of the concert - without applause as asked for, (first time in a long time that I have felt a large audience be so respectful of a musician's request) - was like listening to an opera put on only by one man with a piano. It was fabulous - the music imprinted in my mind and heart. The second half was less intense, more casual and Rufus was engaging with the audience and seemed to be enjoying himself. Rufus Wainwright is a consumate musician, who is not held back by any boundaries or genres of music. If you ever get an opportunity to hear him live - go.

Fantastic concert - what a performer. Not only is he an incredible musician but he owns his performance. It was refreshing to see something different in the first part with the song cycle and then out of character in the second half. Great show. He's the kind of performer you need to see live. My only complaint has to do with the use of smartphones and cameras in the audience. Distracting and disrepectful to fellow audience members and to the performer, especially since it was requested that people don't take photos. That was disappointing. I hope people reconsider that in the next live performance. Just enjoy the moment and leave your phone in your bag. Please.

    Rufus--Self Indulgence to the extreme

by JPea on 2010-11-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I am originally from Montreal and had seen Rufus many times before performing solo as well with the McGarrigle clan. Although his past performances have always been self-indulgent (one need think only of the Judy Garland songs performed in drag), the music was uplifting, the performance was lively and we could enjoy Rufus just being Rufus. With the opening set of this latest performance, however, Rufus has overdone it. If I had never seen Rufus perform before and then had to sit through the first part of the show, I probably wouldn't have returned after the intermission. Asking the audience to not applaud until he had left the stage and playing without interruption the sombre "All Days are Nights" without saying a single word to the audience word was just too much (never mind the costume and the roving painted eye projected on the back screen. Thankfully, the second half of the show was Rufus at the top of his game. With only the piano to accompany him, he delved into a lot of his older material and connected with the audience. Unfortunately, he didn't perform that many songs in the second half due to the two twenty minute intermissions that preceded (after the opening and after the unbearably long first half of his show). Would I recommend this show to a friend? Probably not, because although the second half of the performance was superb, the material was limited. The first half? Totally forgettable.

    Hallelujah

by JODOBO on 2010-11-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Great voice and great playing. Really enjoyed the concert, first half was a little dark, second act lightened up nicely. And Rufus don't worry about Susan Boyle's version of Hallelujah, K.D. Lang's is the best version out there. JP
