Overall I would rate the show 3 stars. Good, not spectacular

by Scott on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Tumbling and some of the dancing is superb. After 2.5 hours some of the routine dancing became repetitive. The large screen at the back is excellent, entertaining. Dancers jumping from the back of the stage and into the screen was done very well. The scenery is excellent. We have never seen anything like that before. The show is just a wee bit too long for me.

by Irene on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I have a great pleasure watching the show- brilliant, very professional combination of acrobatic and dancing motion, vivid and beautiful costumes. I hope to see a Shen Yun performance again. Highly recommend!

Most enjoyable evening with the exception of the parking.

by CK on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I have seen this show 3 times in approx,. 8 years and every time I would give it a 10, The performance and costumes are fantastic, The parking at the NAC is another matter altogether. Big line ups for the payment machines only to have one break down and not work at all then waiting in line to pay at exit. Frustrating end to an otherwise lovely evening.

Not as interesting as 2 years ago

by I. N. on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We watched the show 2 years ago and since my daughter was asking to go there again. We were a bit disappointed, it was very simple show with fewer dancers and no any elaborated tricks. The technique is still very good though. I hope it was just because of the difficulties to get together for rehearsal during the pandemic. I am pretty much sure that the next show is going to be of much higher level. Will come again next time :)

    I loved the production.

by Kim on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The combination of the skill and choreography told the story beautifully. The live music was excellent. The interaction between the live dancers and the video was a new experience for me. I think it was well done and the dancers timing was spot on. I especially appreciated the narrators to help tell the story. It was wonderful the spoke in 3 languages.... very respectful.

    Amazingly Captivating!!

by Shortcake on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The costume designs and backdrop scenery colors were vibrant and impressive! I would love to know how they make the water move in the background; how certain people in the background move across the scenery backdrops. For example, the gentlemen carrying his briefcase and umbrella walking through the park. Yes, I pay attention to detail! Dancers, well, they are extraordinary!!

    Good costumes.

by G. E. on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was repetitive and boring. Good costumes, no male female contact. I wouldn't recommend it. It is very difficult to subnit a bad review.... it just won't submit.

Once I got over my disappointment of not being permitted to take pictures/ videos, I enjoyed the flawless performance. The orchestra was outstanding.

    Wonderful performance

by Masterchiun on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Vibrant colours and precision dance. The only Distraction was the terrible lighting. The shadows on the screen behind the stage were a major distraction.

    Spectacular show

by Camouf on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great to watch, great colors and with the animation in the background...what a show! Would have liked that the french narator would have been as complete as the english one. Why chop off details in the french text??? Overall, great outing.

    Honest Feedback

by Justin on 2022-03-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Overall, the experience deserves 5 Stars! The level of skill needed to execute this performance is legendary and a blessing to watch. Personally, I was so inspired by the performance that I composed piano for over two hours upon returning home. The only point of improvement I have pertains to the CGI used. While it is clever how the CGI backdrop was used as part of the performance, there is a lot of potential here for improvement!

Loved the music and the dancing. Found the songs filled with propaganda that I could not support.

    The Magical Shen Yun experience

by Pat & Franco on 2022-03-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We hadn't been to the NAC for years and were very impressed with the spaciousness, the ambiance and the seating. We had an excellent view of the stage from our mezzanine seats and the sound was flawless. With respect to the show itself, it was delivered in brief performances, punctuated by short introductions from two moderators, who briefly summarized each upcoming act in English, French and Mandarin. I was, however, happy that I had taken the time to read the background stories behind each segment as it lent much greater appreciation and understanding to what was happening on stage. The dancers, both men and women, were extraordinarily strong and graceful and so well synchronized that they often appeared to be moving as one. There were classical Chinese dance pieces, examples of folk dancing from various parts of rural China and contemporary improvisations reflecting current political and cultural issues. The costumes were stunningly beautiful and the virtual reality special effects created an illusion of seamless interplay between the actors on the stage and the backdrop. All in all, this was a production we will never forget.

    Beautiful

by Gabi on 2022-03-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

-Logistically, it was well organized. The NAC made things flow. There were no "hiccups". -Costumes were exquisite, so pleasing to the eye. -Dancers were talented: synchronized, well-executed dances. -The content of the dances and the choreography were creative and beautiful. -The music was enthralling. -At times, there was humour in the story told or by the MCs presented, which was surprising, but I liked it. -Shen Yun is more than just a show displaying old Chinese culture. It seems to want to be a movement, and that showed through some of the performances, as well as in the presentation booklet. It felt a little akin to propaganda, especially the performed songs. They did not seem well-placed or like they had anything to do with the rest of the performance. So those parts, I appreciated less.

    Disappointed

by JJs on 2020-03-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was prepared for a little propagandizing but wanted my granddaughters to see this show. The costumes were sensational and the choreography was brilliant but I began to feel it was repetitive and that the colourful, flowing costumes allowed for less precision in the dancing. I had thought I would be seeing a showcasing by the Peoples' Republic of China of that country's excellence and artistry - I had expected much better. As the show progressed I began to see that this was propaganda, but from a different quarter. When I later learned this was a show primarily touting some unnamed religious sect I was annoyed - at myself. Usually I check things out but this time I moved blindly and felt duped and stupid.
