About

THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:

More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom."  1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Loved, loved, loved the show! Danced the whole time. They played all their great songs. They really have timeless music that could be enjoyed as much today as it was 30 years ago!"

"English Beat was so fantastic! The energy was high and positive! Everyone was dancing and happy. They totally rocked it out and sounded amazing."

"Dave Wakeling continues to carry the torch for this latest version of the English Beat. The current lineup does a great job. The band kept everyone moving throughout the night and I would definitely go see them again..."

    The Beat keeps you dancing

by Slats66 on 2012-10-23The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

This was my 6th English Beat concert and they still exuded the energy and connection with the audience that makes them live favorites! It was predictable but highly entertaining. We really nice to see Dave Wakeling drop into the audience at the end for some meet and greets!

    The English Beat

by dingwall on 2012-10-21The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Unfortunately my son and I drove in from Oakville and because he was 17 was not able to enter. Partially my fault but I believe somehow you guys and girls should make this clearer. There must be a better way. Why on earth we wouldn't want our younger music enthusiasts to enjoy a concert that clearly wasn't sold out and a major influence. This would have been our forth occasion seeing them lately as I also flew my family down to Lake Tahoe to see the English Beat last year.

    Total Crap!

by Ghostinyou on 2012-04-08The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Two years ago at Lee's Palace the Beat were incredible. This week at the Phoenix they played a down-tempo, loungey, poolside, adult contemporary set of their old classics. What a disappointment!

    The Enlish Beat were fantastic!!!

by jill25 on 2012-04-07The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

I thought it would be half empty, afterall it an English band from the 80's. I couldn't of been more wrong, it was packed! Hardly any room to breath let alone dance. The venue was too small, the could of filled something a bit bigger! It was great going back in time to England when I was a teenage, watching The Beat on "the top of the pops" with the golden cut out saxaphones. Singing "Stand down Maragret" with the same passion I did then. It was great seeing all the young faces in the crowd, knowing most of them were probably dragged there with their mum or dad, like my son was! Thanks Dave and the boys from the Enlish Beat for a great night!

The Beat it was not, but Wakeling still has it.

by KaptainKrunk on 2012-04-07The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Had a great time! Wakelling was in fine form. Maybe does not have the energy he once did, but still has a great voice. His band were first rate musicians and all got some serious playing chops.

Amazing show, would have been worth twice the price, played some General Public stuff too. Only bad thing was no encore, that being said they played pretty much everything you wanted to hear in their set.

The English Beat rocked the house.

by TerryinToronto on 2011-07-06Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

The English Beat played almost every song they made famous. They connected with the audience and gave an unforgettable performance. Their high energy was contagious and kept everyone dancing for the entire time.

    The English Beat Brill

by lynno on 2011-07-06Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Thoroughly enjoyed this show, those guys just looked like they were having a ball up on stage. Dave still sounds the same as he did in 1981, great dance music. Amazing to see such a vast scope in age throughout the Mod Club that night.Obviously, the older set who loved The Beat from day one ( like me) but so many young fans who were dancing up a storm and singing all the words to the songs. Great wee night.

    English Beat were fun!

by MidnightRambler on 2011-07-06Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Good show, though we miss Ranking Roger. Great energy and crowd interaction from these guys. A tight, fun band that had everybody moving. The sound was great. The Mod Club is fine, but it could have been at a better (larger) venue.

English Beat were skanking good at the MOD Club

by DRave on 2011-07-06Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

The boys from Birmingham brought it to Toronto big time on Monday night. Starting with Roughrider, they launched the show on full throttle right from the beginning. They didn't let up all night and had the younger and older (a few grey hairs) rude boys and girls bopping on the floor like it was 1980 all over again. They still got it. Loved the show. I thought they might suck. But they didn't... at all. Keep up the good work boys!

The English Beat @ Mod Club

by Ziurande on 2011-07-06Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

It was one of the most amazing live performance of the year. Dave W and Ranking Rogers were together again...Bad ass and kicking. SKA at it's finest. They played for 2 sold hours without a break and kept on going. The bad was tight. I thought I would never see this band in my lifetime. Am glad I was proven wrong. QUITE AMAZING.
