About

Extreme alt-rock outfit AFI, short for A Fire Inside, continue to keep their punk rock spirit alive after more than two decades together. The four-piece California band, impressively composed of the same lineup since 1998, has revitalized hardcore punk ever since their 1991 beginning, though the crew didn’t see mainstream success until their 2003 platinum-selling “Sing the Sorrow.”

Since that time, AFI has satiated ticket holders at amped up concerts nationwide, either on their own headlining runs or as part of the Vans Warped Tour on several occasions.

After a four-year recording hiatus, AFI unveiled its ninth studio set, “Burials,” in October 2013. The collection, produced by Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World), peaked at No. 9 on The Billboard 200. Some tracks on the Republic Records release (“17 Crimes” and “I Hope You Suffer” for example) lean more toward hard rock than horror punk or goth-punk, both labels AFI’s received with past work.

    AFI with Gallows was great!

by CrashJules on 2009-11-11Sound Academy - Toronto

I'd heard some negative things about Sound Academy regarding the sound quality and the view of the stage. I believe those reviews were unfounded. Of course it's difficult to see the whole stage when people taller than you are in front of you – that's the nature of a standing floor set-up! There was plenty of room at the back of the venue for those who didn't want to fight with the crowd. In the sixth or seventh row, at 5'8", I had a reasonable view the entire night. The mosh pit was more intrusive to those of us not moshing than I would have liked, but it was a very tightly-packed crowd. AFI's set was short but sweet, about an hour long, including a three-song encore. They played a good mix of songs from Crash Love (2009), Decemberunderground (2006) and Sing the Sorrow (2003), with a few oldies for the long-time fans. Energy was high, vocals and instruments were right on, and they played to (and for) the crowd. Lots of audience participation. God, I love these guys!!!

I've wanted to see A.F.I. play live for the longest time and they did not disappoint. They played a good mix of songs from really old to brand new and the crowd loved it! A.F.I. was full of energy and put on an amazing show!

This was my second time seeing them this year and they were just as incredible as the time before. Their sound is clear and better than recorded. He can engage an audience no matter the size and is a true performer. All members of the band were flawless as they were in June. As I was leaving, I said that if they were playing again next week, I would be there. I had honestly forgotten about how much I liked them until I saw them play in June. I have a new found admiration for them.

    AFI, wow!

by Dancngbaredave on 2009-11-11Sound Academy - Toronto

AFI's performance was solid with a spectacular light show to boot. I felt they could have had a better opening band than Gallow whose music is good but lacking vocally (but that's only my opinion). Highly recommend catching AFI if you have the chance!

As always, they put on an amazing live show. Absolute perfection! Only complaint is that I wish they played for twice as long :-)
