  • Aretha Franklin was awesome.

by Charliehorse on 2010-09-19Casino Rama - OrilliaRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I loved her show. She is upbeat and so personable. The only fault that we would have is that the air caused her to have problems with her voice. Hopefully it will not be a concern when she comes back for another engagement. By the way, we had a phenominal usher who got right into the show by grooving with the music. He helped to set the mood for Aretha's show. You need more staff like him. (We were sitting in Section H 20 15/16 West.) I wish that I had gotten his name as he was a GREAT Usher. The show dancers were phenominal.

We thoroughly enjoyed Aretha's performance. It is a thrill to be able to see a live performance from such an icon. Thank you for bringing her to Canada.

The Queen of Soul was amazing, loved every minute of the show. Life time memory.

  • Aretha-see her now

by Trustee on 2010-09-19Casino Rama - OrilliaRating: 4 out of 5

To see Aretha live was on my bucket list of things I had to do. I am so glad that I did. The band was amazing and as soon as she came out on stage, before singing one note, I got such an emotional rush because I was going to see such a living legend whose career and music I have been following and enjoying since her Atlantic Records days. I could name all those songs in three notes! She did all of the songs you can think of and some other songs that I was not expecting. We had phenomenal seats, 3rd row, so it was so up close and personal for me. For me, when she sat down at the piano and played and sang, that is when her talents truly shone. When she did Bridge Over Troubled Water at the piano, with her pianist moving over to the organ, I felt like I was in the middle of an intimate gospel event, not the Rama concert venue. Unfortunately, Aretha cannot hit all the notes she used to. She blamed the air conditioning in the room on giving her some laryngitis. I hope that is true, but I fear that perhaps she just can't do what she used to. However, her voice is strong, and I feel blessed for having seen her. If you are a true Aretha fan you will not be disappointed. I was so into the night and wanted to go up to her and just give her a big hug and say thank you, for all the years of great music and for allowing me to see her live.

  • Aretha Franklin

by Anonymous on 2010-09-19Casino Rama - OrilliaRating: 1 out of 5

Very disappointing. Waited a lifetime for this concert, and found the poor woman elderly and quite ill appearing. Consequently none of her songs had much spunk to them and she has lost her range. I'm not certain why she felt the need to sing other people's songs;however, they were not done well. A legend in her own time, no doubt, but now it's time to hang up her song singing days. Overall very poor performance.

  • Empress of Soul!

by Clairemoco on 2010-06-01National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Spellbinding. Aretha's voice soared over us like a glorious rainbow and took us all the way to the pot of gold filled to brimming with deep, rich and goosebump-producing gems of emotion. She and her voice were as one and she absorbed the love given to her from the audience and magnified it with her voice and sent it out to us again with richer and sweeter sounds. She is the Soul of Music and it was an amazing concert and her band was also excellent!

  • Oh Aretha!

    by bdoc2010 on 2010-06-01National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

I was cautiously optimistic when I went to see Aretha at the NAC last Sunday night - I wondered if she would be able to still hit those great notes and if she'd sing her best songs. A friend had seen her a couple of years ago and said she was awsome. Well, what a dissapointment. With a bank full of wonderful songs I was so surprised that she picked so many B side ones. She was unable to sustain her voice and was drowned out by the musicians. In addition to the somewhat boring song set (a quick peek up and down the row I was sitting in plus those in front showed most people not even clapping after the songs) the back up singers took on the role of doing much of the actual singing. Things got a little strange when one of the gospel songs brought two of the back-up singers to tears! I too was almost brought to tears - I paid close to $150 to see a woman who is clearly past her prime and frankly put on a lazy show.

  • Aretha was disappointing

by Canuckgirl on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

Seven of us attended the Aretha Franklin concert May 30th at the NAC in Ottawa. The NAC is known for it's sound and accoustics, but you'd never know it. We were in the second balcony and the sound was terrible. It was as if it had not been mixed properly, and you couldn't hear what Aretha was saying or singing over her backup band/singers. And these tickets were $103 plus tax...so not cheap. She left the stage for a break on two occasions in her short concert, which wasn't even 2 hours, and didn't even give us the courtesy of an encore. She sang a number of songs that I didn't recognize (of which 2 were done with her playing the piano, and were excellent), but didn't sing a lot of the favourites that we all went to the concert to hear, like "Think"...even though she asked the audience what they'd like to hear, and many called this out. When she sang Freeway of Love most of the singing was done by her backup singers...who were good, but not who we paid to go and see. She seemed to be going through the motions but wan't really into the concert. So very very disappointing...and a far cry from the reviews I heard of her Ottawa Nov. performance.

  • All hail the queen of soul!

    by bluesfan123 on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing Aretha Franklin live at the National Arts Center in Ottawa on Sunday May 31st was a dream come true. I could not believe I was finally getting to see her perform live. She did not just perform, she owned the NAC. Her voice is as rich and strong as ever and she was as engaging as she was amazing. She must be the hardest working woman in show biz. She plowed through song after song without a break and when she did take a break it wasn't to change outfits. There was no gimmickery or lightshow just her and her orchestra working their butts off. It's nice to see her entourage includes young and not so young musicians and vocalists. It may be why the arrangements and their delivery are fresh and current. I could not have enjoyed it more.

  • Poor sound mix

by Brassfan on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 2 out of 5

Aretha's old favourites were wonderful and worth the price of admission. However, the sound mix was terrible. Despite having an enormously talented horn section, one could hardly hear them because of the boom boom boom of the base.

  • Aretha is a legend

by OttawaSteve on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

From start to finish, the evening was incredible. The orchestra was awesomely talented and Aretha stole the show. From classics to new material a great night.

  • Disappointing

by Canuckgirl on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

I was really looking forward to this concert. I love her voice. I think she is the best female singer in the world. But this concert was disappointing. She didn't seem to be engaged with her audience, there were too many other singers and musicians who didn't let her amazing voice shine. There was no encore and she played less than 2 hrs. For the price of the tickets, we feel robbed. She was good, not fabulous, not wonderful, just ok. Too bad.

  • Aretha still has it!

by Anonymous on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Overall I would have liked for her to play more of her "commercial" hits. She only played four very well know songs like Pink Cadillac, Chain of Fools, Natural woman, Respect. the rest well, were not "recognizable" She did however wow me with her voice as she's still got a clear and beautiful soulful voice! The acoustics where fabulous as well.

  • aretha was too expensive

by unlikely on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 2 out of 5

too much gospel music .....not enough of the old stuff......an opening act would have been preferred not likeling the NAC will not go back to any shows there,.prefer the Scotia bank place

  • Aretha still can belt it out

by Havananights on 2010-05-31National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

If you're an Aretha fan, you will not be disappointed with her strong vocal performance! I would have liked to hear more of her old classics, yes, but I am very happy to have been there to hear and see the Queen of Soul!

  • aretha in ottawa

by Jamiekins on 2009-11-15National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

the sound was awful for the first half which is totally unexpected for the National Art Centre. She is at her best when she is behind the piano and wailing away, her take on Bridge Over Troubled Waters was the true Aretha!

  • by Anonymous on 2009-11-12National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts I've ever seen, with an amazing band and a performer who could get Ottawans on their feet and dancing.

  • Queen of soul

by Boum on 2009-11-11National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

The Aretha show was very good. Musicians were great. The show was too short, less than two hours, too much gospel, not enough "soul". I would have liked to hear more of her old hits. All of us still enjoyed hearing her anyway.
