Arizona Coyotes History

Before they were the Arizona Coyotes, this franchise — a founding member of the World Hockey Association — was originally based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and began playing in 1972 as the Jets. The early team made headlines before the season even started after signing hockey star Bobby Hull from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Jets went on to be one of the best teams in the league, winning three titles from 1976 to 1979.

The WHA merged with the NHL before the 1979-1980 season, but the Jets were unable to maintain their dominance and the franchise was relocated to Arizona before the 1996-1997 season; they became known as the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes subsequently qualified for the postseason in each of their first four seasons and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky became a minority owner of the team in 2000 and their head coach in 2005.

After filing bankruptcy in 2009, the team was later purchased by the NHL. Despite the tumultuous seasons, the Coyotes won 50 games during the 2009-2010 season. In the 2011-2012 season, they won their first division title in franchise history. In 2013, the NHL sold the team and its name was changed to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014. Since 1997, the Coyotes have made it to the playoffs a total of nine times.

    Unique Experience

by Canadian13 on 2017-02-05Gila River Arena - Glendale

It was like going to a Chicago home game at the Gila River arena in Phoenix, a sea of Chicago red... It must have been intimidating for the Coyotes to experience that in their own city. The Coyotes put up a great fight and the game was excellent...

    Great participation!

by Herr on 2016-12-24Gila River Arena - Glendale

Although the refereeing was disgraceful, the overall feeling and getting fans to enjoy themselves was awesome!

Great area called Westgate entertainment centre next to the arena. You can park for free. Area has lots of restaurants and shopping around it. The only problem is that it's a 40 minute drive from Scottsdale to Glendale. The area gets busy near game time.

    Great Experience!!!

by Maverick27 on 2016-03-29Gila River Arena - Glendale

Being Canadians on holidays we decided to take in a Coyotes game, sure glad we did!! Our family had a great time and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Would never know you were in the middle of the desert! We have been to many games up here and in my opinion got a better bang for the buck. Will not hesitate to take in another game next time in Phoenix!

    Entertaining Game

by Nelly71 on 2016-03-27Gila River Arena - Glendale

For two very average to below average hockey teams the entertainment of this game exceeded my expectations. The building in Glendale is beautiful and with eateries and entertainment located around the arena, you can make an event out of the game.

    Hockey fans?

by Whatithink on 2016-03-25Gila River Arena - Glendale

Enjoyed an NHL game as an Edmonton Oiler fan definitely, but question Phoenix Coyotes fans. They did not really cheer their team on; they walked to/from their seats during plays and the real kicker was the lady in front of us who purposely sat down for Oh Canada! Who does that? I am thinking that if there werent so many fans of the visiting teams spending winter months in Phoenix & area, this city wouldn't (& shouldn't) have a team! The game was mediocre until thd 3rd period but ended up ok even though we lost.

    Coyotes win!

by prowlfan on 2016-03-08Gila River Arena - Glendale

I bought a ticket in the middle end section which turned out to be the club section. They were serving a buffet which may have been included in the ticket price. I had already eaten so I didn't ask. It wasn't mentioned in the Ticketmaster screens. It would be worth checking into.

    Coyotes struggling!

by prowlfan on 2016-03-06Gila River Arena - Glendale

The arena is fine. The concessions have limited variety with few healthy choices. The game presentation is lively and full of breaks. The centre ice front of upper deck offers a good view. You can find Tim Hortons if you look.

Great deal for what we got...

by HockeyFan1974 on 2016-01-20Gila River Arena - Glendale

The family had a great day out at the game. Seats were great, arena was so new! Way different then the old ones I've been to before!

Venue is great and service fine. Prices keep going up for things which is not going to help with efforts to increase attendance at hockey games. Third period was good but pretty dull for first two.

    You should have been there.

by Golfergreat on 2015-03-08Gila River Arena - Glendale

What a night. Bringing out the old uniforms and some vets to spice it up was great. The tempo of the game was way up in the third and going to O T was awesome. First class facility.

    Flames were Awesome!

by TREX on 2015-01-28Gila River Arena - Glendale

Excellent game in a beautiful facility. Very reasonable prices compared to other NHL facilities we have attended. Beer was pricier though!

Arizona is not all about hockey

by Caracanna on 2015-01-11Gila River Arena - Glendale

Your arena is gorgeous, beautifully padded seats...it's very easy to navigate and everything is very clean. I was sorry to see so few fans there however, without the "snowbirds" the arena would be less than half full, but I realize that football, baseball and basketball are the sports of choice here. Overall we had a very good time and would go back, as the "true north" love their hockey..food and drinks are pricey, $5 for a bottle of water is a bit steep considering the value of the Canadian dollar.

    Fun experience, extremely convenient

by pkboomer on 2015-01-05Gila River Arena - Glendale

I took my 4 year old son to his first hockey game, along with my father in-law. Buying the tickets online was extremely simple, and I used the digital tickets on my iPhone at the gate. Our seats were very easy to access for my father in-law who has limited mobility, as the escalators to the upper level were just inside the doors to the arena. All in all it was a wonderful and memorable experience for me and my son!

Great action on the ice, fans tend to suck tho

by Tyeeking on 2014-12-07Gila River Arena - Glendale

The game was great and there was good action on the ice but the fans were terrible! The couple behind us talked through the whole game about gossippy crap. She wouldn't shut up and he was just as bad. We were sitting near the isle so we spent a big part of the game getting up to let people out to go to the concessions or the bathroom. PEOPLE, if you go to the game, watch the game!!!!!!!!

Very nice event . Game was entertaining. We had nice seats and we got them at 2 for 1 pricing! The area where the rink was located is vibrant. Will attend again when I'm back in the area.

NY Islanders play the Arizona Coyotes

by HipsterDoofus on 2014-11-11Gila River Arena - Glendale

It was the regularly scheduled NHL game between the two teams. The NY Islanders have a super star in John Tavares and a bunch of mediocre players of which many are barely NHL-caliber. The Arizona Coyotes have strong goal tending with Smith in goal. The rest are a bunch of cast-offs - though they work hard. Doan and Yandle are above average players players but certainly do NOT make the admission worth it. The game was mediocre with the Islanders eking out a 1-0 victory.
