Great technically, grea artists, but meaningless and not fun

by Francois on 2022-03-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This may simply be down to taste but my wife and I very much disliked the show. The artists were generally very good, very talented and gave great, dynamic performances. They certainly seemed to be having a great time. The technical production was also very good: decors, lighting were very effective - although the point of the led-studded outfit was completely lost on me as it seemed a visual gadget more than anything else. But much to my regret, we did not like the show itself at all. Very surprised by this, as Cats has been very successful and we do enjoy the lighter things as much as the more serious stuff. But the 'story', if any, was totally lost on us - a meaningless succession of characters are introduced and... that's all. No redeeming feature at all to the storyline - and I am generally very easily amused. The music was also much of a let down, especially for a show of Cat's repute. Canned-sounding synths with no depth or warmth whatsoever. We do enjoy musicals - but certainly not this one.

Orchestra and cast performances were weak. Makeup was poorly done as were the cat gestures.

The woman sitting in front of us was bathed in her perfume.

by Chris on 2022-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We were in a box where there are six seats. An elderly woman was sitting in front of me and her perfume was very strong. Even with my mask on ( an N95) I could smell it. I felt sick and got a really bad headache. My husband talked to the usher and he kindly moved us but it was too late I felt terrible. We left in the intermission. The woman was with a younger couple it looked like her son and his girlfriend/partner. I can't understand why they did not mention this. I have never had this problem before. The NAC should have a policy and if they do it should be enforced. Very underfortunate!!

    Great production

by AD on 2022-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This is my fifth time seeing cats but my daughters first. It was an excellent production and dancing was beautiful. The music though very good did not have a lot of energy to it. But from a visual perspective it was a very enjoyable performance

    Mixed Feelings

by R. D. on 2022-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My wife and I attend few professional music or theatre events so were really looking forward to seeing CATS after our long pandemic isolation. Sorry Mr. Webber, but CATS seems to be more of a dance show than a musical. There is really only one memorable song - ironically, Memories - the rest being totally forgettable. Nonetheless, this production was quite fine, the dancing superb and energetic. However, like so many other reviewers, we had trouble hearing and understanding the dialogue and lyrics for at least half the show. Do the directors and show managers not read reviews? People have been complaining of the same problem with this show from numerous performance in different venues spanning many months, yet it seems to go uncorrected. I do wish we had sat closer to the stage to have better appreciated the costumes and makeup. Finally, with what we must pay to see a show like this, the availability of only a digital playbill is annoying - how cheap can you get?

by Amrob on 2022-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The theatre was very impressive with easy in and out…no congestion. The performance was exceptional. The actors and dancers were in perfect costumes with ease for dancing and crawling!! Clear voices too

    Still amazing

by Violet on 2022-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was the fourth time seeing Cats, my partner the first. We both loved it: The energy, costumes, setting and of course the fantastic dancing and beautiful music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It had been 25 years since I last saw it but still just as amazing as the first time I saw it.

    Great show

by Alicat on 2022-03-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I saw Cats when I was 11 over 30 years ago and it was an unforgettable experience. so I was very excited that Cats was coming to Ottawa so brought my daughter who is the same age as I was then the other night and was not disappointed. Same awesome music singing and dancing! I almost remembered the words to the songs! Such a fun night especially after going nowhere and doing nothing for the last 2 years.

Great dance, voice, music but too long. Too many group numbers despite excellent choreography.

    Orchestra needs work.

by Matt on 2022-03-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I find myself again coming away from a touring production of Cats with a bittersweet taste in my mouth. On one hand, the cast and onstage performances were well portrayed and sung, however the orchestra was very clearly made up of mostly electronic keyboards mimicking real instruments. We’re now in 2022, there is no excuse to have a professional touring show sound like its being played by a 5th grade talent show orchestra. I grew up on the 1998 home movie version and hearing this level of orchestra just doesn’t do it for me. Sounds cheap.

    Great performers!

by Brenda on 2022-03-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The CATS performance was amazing! The dancing was superbly choreographed and some dancers were so acrobatic! The singing was great! The solos showed incredible vocal abilities! I would go see it again :)

    Take binoculars

by Trevor on 2022-03-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Only the first few rows could appreciate the costumes. Anywhere else needed binoculars to appreciate the work done with costumes and the subtleties of the acting. Otherwise O.K.

    Not great

First half was slow and boring. Second half was better. Not worth what we paid :(

    Really did not enjoy it

by JR on 2022-03-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Actions on stage was very repetitive. Singing is what gave it one star. If the singing was poor I would not even rate it I do enjoy live stage performance, this was just not for me. There was 6 of us in our group and they all felt ver similar to me. Thank you

    CATS

by Theatre Fan on 2022-03-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Loved the performance, music, and costumes. I was fully engaged throughout the entire performance and had a big smile on my face under my mask. I almost cried when the theatre staff said, “welcome back.” It’s been a long two years and it was so nice to be around people again.

Thank you for a wonderful night at the theater

by Mon on 2022-03-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

After years into the pandemic, this had been the first time that I was able to go back to the theater to watch a live performance again. I'm happy to have not been disappointed. This production is world-class, all right. I have watched Cats a few times and this wasn't the best, some performers strained in the singing, but the dancing was very good. I thought the standout performances were from the cast members who played the roles of Victoria, Munkustrap, and Mr. Mistoffelees. I can't wait for the upcoming shows in the season.
