About

Christopher Plummer's Tony Award-winning tour de force is an unforgettable portrayal of legendary actor John Barrymore, a man of colossal talent and contradictions, and one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time.

It's all here in William Luce's "fiendishly entertaining" (The New York Times) play: the wives and the women... the drink and the profanity... the notoriety and the glory... in an evening of great theatre that is made all the more indelible by Christopher Plummer who is "nothing short of sensational" (The New York Post).

With the entire original Broadway creative team reunited, BARRYMORE returns to Toronto's historic Elgin Theatre for 30 performances only.

At 81 - At the Top of His Game

Christopher Plummer is larger than life in his Emmy award winning reprisal of John Barrymore. How good was it? let's put it this way - he received a standing ovation BEFORE he came out for his bow!!

    Barrymore

The best stage performance I have ever seen. The Shakespearean soliloquies made it somewhat autobiographical for Plummer (as well as Barrymore). For Christopher Plummer to sustain such focus and level of energy for 2 hours was a monumental accomplishment for a person of 81 years. It was a privilege to be there.

masterful performance by a living legend!

    by dandelion1 on 2011-03-06Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Christopher Plummer was a treat to watch in BARRYMORE. The second act seemed too short, but it is difficult to complain about a play and performance that leaves the audience wanting more. I was expecting a masterful characterization of John Barrymore, but an unexpected joy was Plummer-as-Barrymore's seamless portrayals of other personalities such as a famed female gossip columnist, Barrymore's brother Lionel and his sister Ethel. Bravo!

Had no idea what to expect. What a treat. Plummer was fantastic and truly funny. For just 2 people in the show you never got bored. I saw it as a legend playing a legend.

I saw Christopher Plummer last year at Stratford in the lead of The Tempest. I don't know why I've waited so long to enjoy his performances, I must admit this one man show for the most part (aside from Franks voice,) was a real treat! The humor, the rallying of him and the "backstage" fellow Frank..delightful

    Barrymore is outstanding!

by CPgroupie on 2011-03-03Elgin Theatre - Toronto

This is simply one of the best pieces of theatre I have ever seen. Sitting there watching Plummer work his magic, I could feel that I was in the presence of greatness. It was enthralling to watch him work through the numerous characters he portrays so seemlessly througout the play. I was disappointed when it ended - I could easily have sat and watched more and more. Christopher Plummer is pure magic!

This show could not get any better. I was moved to tears by not only the presence that Mr Plummer carries himself onstage and how he completely embodies his character, but by seeing the amazing talent that is Mr Plummer perform live, before my very eyes. I truly cannot recommend this show highly enough, A true gem of a man and a performer. Thank you to Mr Plummer for sharing his fabulous gift with the world. Love love love.

Christopher Plummer is one of the great actors. He was unbelievable, he had us all captivated from the moment he hit the stage. Plummer is a great actor!

by Gheza on 2011-03-01Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The show was nice. Christopher Plummer is a great actor and he really delivered. He played body an soul and really lived his Barrymore character. It is very challenging to deliver a theatre piece all by yourself. Kudos to Christopher for being able to do that at his 70+ age. He had more energy and wit than many other actors 20 years yonger than him. We thank him for the nice memories and wish him good health and many more plays!

    Barrymore

by professorwurd on 2011-03-01Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The play itself was more of a tableau or a moment in time in the great actor's career. The aging Barrymore reflects on his life and has interesting insights on all of the ups and downs - his career, booze, beautiful women, marriage and family. Plummer's representation of this great moment was both hilarious and poignant. He truly embraced the character and brought him back to life, if only for a brief time. Bravo!!!

Christopher Plummer has still got it!

by JudnJulz on 2011-02-28Elgin Theatre - Toronto

From the moment Christopher Plummer "staggered" onto the stage until the end when he sauntered off stage I was mesmorized. His portayal of John Barrymore was riveting, funny and believable. Through the the entire performance Mr. Plummer's presence on stage was amazing. He has a physical presence that can not be matched by many. He had the audience in stitches with many of his lines. He danced, sang and made us laugh. When you watch Mr. Plummer on stage it is very easy to forget that he is in his eighties. I would highly recommend this performance to anybody, if you are not yet a fan of Mr. Plummer, you will be after seeing this performance.
