BECK IN CONCERT:

Alt-rock icon and master of reinvention Beck made a return to form of sorts in 2014 with Morning Phase, a companion album to 2002's beloved Sea Change. Eschewing the irony and sampling featured prominently in many of his other outings, Beck's latest is awash with earnest optimism and acoustic instrumentation — the result is a lush, organic, emotionally charged tour de force that comes across as beautifully in live concert as it does on record. Backed by a full band, Beck hits the road in 2014 for the Morning Phase tour, which includes a much-anticipated appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Beck moved to New York in 1989 and cut his teeth in the city's anti-folk scene before returning to Los Angeles in 1991. In 1993, his limited-release single "Loser" became a surprise college radio favorite, eventually growing into a mainstream Top 10 hit and garnering him a flood of label offers. Signing with Geffen Records, he released Mellow Gold in 1994, launching to both critical and commercial success virtually overnight. 1996 follow-up Odelay would prove even more successful, spawning three hit singles and taking home several Grammys, including Best Alternative Music Album. In the ensuing years, Beck's creativity and fearless experimentation have made him one of pop music's most idiosyncratic talents — the acclaimed 2014 release of Morning Phase, his twelfth studio album, proved that he's just as vital today as he was 20 years ago.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Beck was ridiculously amazing. If you get a chance to catch him live, do it while you can. He is a true showman and should not be missed."

"As usual Beck put on an amazing performance. He played a few songs from each album (including the reader), and he played every last one spectacularly."

"He plays a mix of his old & new material, both acoustic & electric, he breaks out the harmonica, then plays a cover of Billie Jean. What!?! I only wish it could have gone on all night long."

Beck was cool! Sound was 4/5

by BigPoppa1 on 2017-08-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Really enjoyed the show, and the opening act "McRorie" was pretty entertaining and what you would expect Beck to choose as an opening act. Beck played all the old jams and some of his newer tracks. Well balanced. The sound overall was a little loud, and it distorted the vocals. For the songs I didn't know, I couldn't make out the lyrics.

    Beck was like Wow!!

by GlenLove on 2017-08-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Beck knows how to entertain... from start to finish, he delivered a set that grabbed you right away and did not let go! Playing songs spanning his entire career, it was the perfect mix of old classics and new favourites! I drove from Calgary for three hours and took a vacation day from work to see this show and I was not disappointed! It was everything I had hoped for and more! Tip of the cowboy hipster hat to you, Beck

Great show! Great Venue! Beck is a living legend and he proved it once again. You would be hard pressed to find another artist with so much bandwidth and clarity.

I seem to catch Beck once every 10 years or so, or at least attempt to. The first time I saw him was at Lollapalooza in 1995. I was set to see him again in 2003, at the Field Day Festival, but he was injured backstage and wasn't able to perform. So I was long overdue! All in all, it was a great show! Beck has so much energy, charisma, and a great sense of humour. Even if the sound wasn't stellar, his performance was. The show was animated by his near-constant movement, and antics by both him and the band. He played a wide range of songs, and I'm pretty sure I was smiling during the entire show.

Beck in New York - could it get any better.

by Cindylee on 2014-07-28Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Beck was absolutely awesome. This is, by far, my favourite show of the year, and very possibly ever! Beck and his amazing band played with excellence and enthusiasm. The crowd fed off their energy resulting in an unforgettable evening. Beck's music spans two decades of creative genius and, if possible just keeps on getting better. The evening was a showcase of this. I'm thrilled to have been there.

Great show. Opening act - Ghost of a Sabre-Tooth Tiger - also good. My one complaint was the 35 minute gap between acts - an unacceptable and unnecessary delay.

    BECK was awesome!!

by Raindog4182 on 2014-07-01Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Loved this show... first time seeing BECK live ever and so glad that this was the first as I absolutely love the new album of "quiet" stuff and they played several of them. A little short for my liking (an older Elvis Costello managed to play for an hour longer!!) but every minute was enjoyed!!

great show. I wish there were more tunes from the new album but I get it. I wish the audience sent back more energy but that may not be the Canadian way.

Saw Beck a few years ago at Massey....truly a great show! Very disappointed in sound quality this time. Sound was too loud....too much distortion on the low ends. Overall I enjoyed the show....Beck is a very talented singer/song writer.

first time seeing beck my only complaint is that the sound system was too powerful for the venue. I felt like i was being physicaaly assaulted by the bass drum. Perhaps the soundmen team should be fired. Also my seat was at the back on the floor!

by J1983 on 2014-06-30Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Although Beck started a half hour late, I loved this concert. Beck performed a great mix of old and new and the audience seemed to be eating up every minute of it, me included! The opener, Sean Oko Lennon's band GOASTT was amazing as well. Would see them again in a heartbeat.

    He's Beck- Hell Yes

by OBlade on 2014-06-30Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I've been waiting years for Beck to come back to Toronto, and man did he bring it. His beat was correct. If you're a Beck fan there's no way you'd want to miss one of his concerts, and if you're not a Beck fan, there's something wrong with you. He's got songs from every genre you can think of and they all rock live. Seriously. The show had a lot of fan service, with a few songs from his great new album, but a heavy focus on earlier songs from almost every album. From Devil's Haircut to Where It's At through Paper Tiger, Loser, Sexx Laws, and Soul of Man, Beck's musical sides were all represented and they were all played with power and passion. Beck himself is as awesome a showman as you'd imagine, making random observations and jokes, but also talking about music seriously. He danced despite an injury and just seemed like the coolest guy ever up there, holding your attention the whole time and making you feel like the show was for you. His band's great, too. You can tell they all love playing music live by the fun they were having, running around, playing with each other, and all falling down together at one point. They know how to play all the songs and play them well, great musicians. I can't recommend Beck's show enough and I just really, really hope he comes back to Toronto soon. The guy knows how to put on a show where he has fun, and where he has fun you can't help but having fun too. Brilliant music, smiles all around, one of the very best shows I've seen.

    Beck was great....!

by RWFan on 2014-06-30Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

As always, Beck delivered a fantastic show. Loved it and I am looking forward to his next one. Sean Lennon and his band was a real surprise. I am glad I go for the opening acts, I never know who will miss if I don't. After all, Beck opened for the Stones years ago and people around me thought he was good. No doubt they became new fans.

    Beck was in fine form!

by momster on 2014-06-30Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The show was fantastic, starting with Sean Lennon's band Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, and then of course Beck. The only thing that disappointed was that Beck wasn't able to do any encores, I think perhaps because of the venue.
