Ben Howard won the prize for the most lackluster

by NothavingfunatBen on 2018-09-24Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

I always thought that my experience of seeing the Counting Crows after they had given up on life would be the worst concert experience. Well Ben Howard even out did them. I am not sure if he is touring purely for money but he clearly doesn't enjoy performing live.

Love Ben much...but this concert not so much

by BurnabyMum on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Maybe we were spoiled being introduced to Ben Howard through Every Kingdom, which is the sound track of so many home videos I can say it's been the soundtrack of our lives for the past few years. So I wrongly assumed we'd hear some of our Every Kingdom favourites. And didn't. I can't blame Ben for the pouring rain, the soggy shoes, the beer garden closing early...but an Old Pine would have healed some of those woes. Do like the more recent tunes if I'm lounging about in a warm living room but it would have been great if he'd noticed that the melencholy pace was getting tough on a cold, dark and rainy night. When your audience goes quiet and many start to leave early...

    Great musician, but...

by Anonymous on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Ben Howard is an amazing musician but his performance leaves something to be desired. He doesn't really interact with he crowd and didn't play many of his older songs. He's super talented but I'll stick to listening to him on the radio next time.

    Ben Howard and the elements

by APPY on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

The music of Ben Howard is great, the band was great however the venue was unfortunately not the right fit. Deer Lake park is a beautiful venue but in Vancouver in September it's a gamble. Outdoor show, pouring rain and cold, no seating or blankets to lay down (due to puddling) and no umbrellas allowed in the concert grounds (as everyone would block the view of the person behind them) all add up to a very poor experience. On a clear summer day, it would have been amazing, but not well into September. An indoor venue would have been far better. The result was that the whole show you are jus waiting for your favorite songs to come on so you can leave. And with Ben Howard's style where the songs are longer and slower, and with the weather getting worse progressively, it didn't let us appreciate the wondering parts of the songs, the pauses and stretches. The song selection was good but it could have been a bit better in my opinion. Also, Ben and the band played down many of the parts that would otherwise be more upbeat and load. The guitar solos certainly could have been dialed up but they went in a different direction with them.

    Not the right venue

by Nel1 on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

The music was lovely but it would have been great in a sit down venue. Zero energy or crowd interaction... I’ve seen a number of artists at Deer Lake and they are always unbelievable shows, and I like Ben Howard’s music but in this venue you want to dance and sing and get excited and this experience didn’t live up to the usual Deer Lake caliber.

    Show some love, Ben.

by Verysadface on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Well, I love Ben Howard. Period. I flew from Edmonton and then the next night to Seattle to watch this lovely man. I knew there was a chance of rain in September (perhaps not as much) and I was right. The drizzle to driving rain was actually very befitting of the Ben Howard vibe (*side note: many people must have not looked our their window or read the “no umbrella” policy because there were a lot of poor fools soaking wet in jeans and summer jackets). After much thought on two nights of concerting, Ben showed as much love for Canada as he did for our southern neighbours across the border. I’m all for the brooding and quiet artist, but cmon man, we stood in pouring rain. Please acknowledge. Also, we the fans are your fans because of your previous work. We honour your new acoustic stylings but throw us a bone. When your new music is super mellow and the one (maybe 2) older songs send the crowd into rapture, please consider it your duty to keep us happy. Please read the crowd. Sadly, I watched many people leave the shows early. Say something (anything!) to the people that not only allow you to do what you love, but also adore you. The encore was lacklustre and so mellow I wanted to go home and sleep. And I did. Maybe even on the walk. Tours are meant to showcase new work but if you only play live to do that you are taking a big gamble not playing “some” of the old favourites. And, you have multiple albums. Not cool you only played 13 songs.

    Bland

by 54rdman on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

I love Ben Howard’s previous releases but found Noonday Dream a real sleeper. I didn’t expect Ben to play the entire album live. I get that an artist has to put out music like this but ya don’t have to perform it! Some music just doesn’t translate live. This show very quickly became an atmospheric background to a rainy evening in the park.

    So disappointing

by Andy4586 on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Ben does not care for his fans at all. Hardly acknowledges the audience and does not play any of his most popular songs. Very dissapointing to see.

Please play your old songs :(

by SadGirl on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

So sad Ben Howard didn’t play songs from his old albums. I realize he’s moved on from his old “sound” but I’ve waited years to see him. Heart broken!

After years of looking forward to this show, I was left soggy, disheartened and disappointed. I have been a huge fan of Ben Howard’s music since 2011 and even went to far as to get a tattoo of his song references tattooed on me. However the last album he released Noonday Dream was a disappointment, I kept listening to it the weeks before the show to be familiar with the songs and try to like them more but struggled. When the day came for the show, I took my umbrella to work with me in the morning, hoping it wouldn’t rain at the show but if it did I wouldn’t get too wet. Once walking through to Deer Lake I had my umbrella confiscated from me, as did everyone at the event. I don’t know how an event can refuse people umbrellas in the pouring rain, with no alternatives for a rain coat or garbage bag at the least. Needless to say the 3 hours I spent at the concert made me soaked and later sick (obviously). The only reason I stayed was because of my love and respect for Ben Howard’s music, and even then, he only played music from his latest album. I understand advertising your new album and wanting to play that, I understand the tour was for this album, but the mass of people standing in the rain didn’t hear about Ben Howard not come to this event for this album, and we didn’t get any songs from his most popular albums. I don’t leave negative reviews ever, but if there is any way someone else could read this and be better prepared (for both weather and music expectations) that’s all I want. Taking umbrellas from people in the pouring rain is inhumane and I’m sure I’m not the only one who walked away from that concert with a new cold / flu.

Give the people what they want.

by mbob on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

I love Ben Howard, his music has always been amazing. The weather was less than satisfactory but the die hards stuck through it until the end. I think I can speak for a lot of people, when I say I wish Ben would have played one of his older hits. I understand they are there to promote the new music, but standing in the pouring rain for hours did not make for the best experience. Not even one of the songs a lot of people would have liked to hear was played. And to top it off, not even an encore.

Only played his new album which isn't good compared to his old stuff really wish he mixed it up. It was a very boring sleepy concert.

    Disappointed

by Anonymous on 2018-09-23Deer Lake Park - Burnaby

Ben Howard did very little to engage and connect with the audience. It was an outdoor concert on a cold rainy evening with GA seating (standing). After an extended time setting up the stage, Ben started the show without acknowledging his fans and then played one slow song after another (most of his new album). By the time Ben Howard took the stage we all could’ve used a bit of a musical pick-me-up and some love from Ben Howard. The vibe from the stage was aloof and self indulgent.

    Ben Howard….. OUTSTANDING!!!

by Haybales on 2015-02-18UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

Ben Howard is am amazing singer/songwriter, incredible guitar skills and incredible voice, he really lives and breathes his music, singing from his heart and soul reaching out into the audience soothing and calming at times, then frenetic and vibrant at others, just BRILLIANT!! Secretly feel he would feel more at home in a more intimate setting such as the Commodore, Orpheum, or Chan Centre in Vancouver, he loves connecting to his audience on this level feeding off their energy, and it suits his style. He is a truly wonderful artist. We were lucky to be on the floor in the second row and could see and feel the expressions on the faces of the band, all excellent musicians, a very, very professional production, we left as always, feeling uplifted and loved, THANK YOU, love you too Ben!! :) Come back to Vancouver soon!! :)

I was sad they hardly played any of his "oldie but goodies"! I understand promoting the new album (new stuff is great!).... But common, I was eagerly waiting "old pine" , "diamonds", and some upbeat "keep your head up"...

by GreatMusicFan on 2015-02-17UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

i have been to many great concerts in my life. ... This one blew them all out of the water! There are literally no words to describe how amazing this concert way. Only emotions. All I can say is if you ever get an oppertunity to see Ben Howard perform DO IT! or you might as well spend the rest of your life regretting it forever.

Great show, it would have been better if he'd included a few of the older songs, but still top quality performance. Crowd were well into it.

Ben Howard is a young artist yet he puts on a great show, he's comfortable on the stage and his music has a lot to offer for a live performance.
