  • Big Sugar was sweet

by Rammer2 on 2015-01-30Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

Big Sugar semi unplugged was a wonderful surprise. Amazingly diverse sounds never disappointed. The arrangements of their electric hits were very entertaining. I loved how much fun they were having and how easily they meshed the array of instruments they played. Adding the Trews was a pleasant bonus to the evening. Great venue and great value. Thanks Big Sugar.

  • Big Sugar be jammin'

by Showgun on 2014-04-28Glenn Gould Studio - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The charisma of Big Sugar shines when stripped down for an unplugged show. This small venue is so intimate, I felt like I was one of their buddies sitting in on a jam session in someone's garage. Part of me was hoping Gordie Johnson would pull out his double neck & blow my ears off but their sound was so pure it seemed righteous! The new songs are wonderful and I know the new album will be one of my summer favorites. They sprinkled in a few of the old favorites with the "yard" feel and it worked for me. (Nice mix of blues & reggae) He referred to the band members as his "Big Sugar Family" and you could definitely feel the love in the room. Special mention goes to Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe who's work took it to another level. Congrats on a great experience!

  • Big Sugar - Yard Style

    by GeorgeA1Fan on 2014-04-28Glenn Gould Studio - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing show of acoustic reggae & blues with a bit of country twang compliments of Gordie J on banjo. The whole band was tight but they created such a relaxed, effortless style - that takes skill. They played a lot of the new record and a good cross-section of the old stuff. It would be nice to see other bands try this 'stripped-down" style applied to their music in a smaller venue.

  • Big Sugar Unplugged at Glenn Gould Studio

    by DonnaF111 on 2014-04-28Glenn Gould Studio - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

WOW!! Ive been a fan of Big Sugar for years. They are one of my favourite bands to see live. But this concert was a treat. Unplugged and FABULOUS! no ear plugs required! the audience was so quiet, we were captivated by the band. What a night!! It was absolutely amazing and a nice change. I still look forward to seeing them plugged in and LOUD as they are one of the loudest bands to see live. And seeing Gordie sing Wild Ox Moan without even a mic, again, ....... just incredible!!!

Amazing to see Big Sugar can dial it down for an Acoustic performance, new album is exceptional!

Amazing! So amazing!!! Stage presence was warm and they totally engaged with audience. Vibe was one of love and community and every song was done with passion and joy. So amazing - will go again and again

  • BIG SUGAR Acoustic? Not what I paid for.

Interesting show. Still a big fan but I felt the show was misrepresented - I did not buy tickets to an acoustic show. My Big Sugar is big and loud.

  • Unplugged & bummed

I have loved Big Sugar since the mid 90's, never went to see them until this gig & I wish I would have either waitied for another show or had gone to a previous one because the show was a HUGE disappointment to me. They were unplugged & all everyone kept talking about & actually yelling out loud to the band was "plug it it!!!!" We wanted to hear them rock like we know they can. They whole venue was strange, I've never been to a concert where there were so many chairs set up, like who wants to sit???!!! We wanted to dance & sure enough we stood @ the back towards the bar & danced as best we could. Of coarse we still had a great time, I mean how could my girlfriends & I not but please Big Sugar, "PLUG IT IN" next time you come around, we would all really appreciate it!!!!! Thanks =)

  • I always enjoy seeing Big Sugar

Big Sugar always puts on a great show. I love their sound, style, and the way they blend cover versions of classic songs into their own. I enjoy hearing and seeing how the various band members contribute in different ways to each song. Love the use of the 6/12 string guitar.

by CajunMan on 2012-11-12Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This was an excellent concert. The band is so incredibly tight, and the music is a lot of fun. Gordie Johnson is a great guy too, high-fiving and fist-bumping the crowd after the show. Can't wait for them or Grady to come through again!

Liked the cabert style but the sound equipment was so bad I left before I didn't like the band anymore, I have never left a concert before, it was that bad. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to enjoy Big Sugar or the front band, the Balconies.

  • Great Band Great show

by JWL6617 on 2012-10-28CN Center - Prince George, BCRating: 4 out of 5

Took in Big Sugar in Prince George BC ..and it was sweeeeet. The Balconies opened and they were awesome. Wished i'd known more about them before going to the show to see and hear them. check em out on You tube before going. Big sugar played all the big songs..very colorful band the really get the groove going and the balconies joined them for a few tunes as well. The venue was CN Center which is the big hockey arena here in PG..so the sound at the back left a lot to be desired..but move up to the front and it was great. If the sound had have been bigger better, i would give it 5 stars.

  • Awesome Show11

by RockOnDamit on 2012-10-28Prince George CN Centre - Prince GeorgeRating: 5 out of 5

Wow they were much better than I expected given they've been "off the radar" for a few years. It was a great time with a small crowd, they looked like they were having fun as well. Nice of them to let the opening act participate as well.

Gordie Johnson is a guitar GOD. Over 3 hours between both bands with WMM joining Big Sugar on stage as well. Awesome show.

  • Big Sugar - big yes.

by medicms on 2011-11-14Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Saw the show in Winnipeg. Big Sugar met all expectations with their past hits and were establishing new enjoyment with their new songs. The band seemed to honestly enjoy being together again and it showed in the quality of their performance. They left nothing more to desire.

    by JPinewood29 on 2011-11-14Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Long time since I saw Gordie and Big Sugar. Still great show and amazing guitar player. I miss the Boss suits and the more guitar -driven blues-rock that he used to play but nevertheless, had great time and enjoyed the show from start to finish. Would like to see a little less Rastafarian-ism but it didn't distract from the show.

  • I Had My Way.... a True Believer!!!

by SugarisSweet on 2011-11-13Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I discovered Big Sugar just before the end of the band. I was in a music store and asked the clerk who is this band?... I was hooked .... Drove from Winnipeg to Regina to see them perform. Just bought a new to me car... and aptly named it Johnson after that fantabulous concert. Johnson the car is still running... and Johnson and Big Sugar are back and reving it up. Got into high gear right off the start. Took us down memory lane but gave us a few new turns with RPM. Love the groovy Christmas tune!!!!
