BRIAN WILSON IN CONCERT:

Visionary musical genius Brian Wilson first rose to international acclaim in the early ‘60s as the mastermind behind The Beach Boys’ “California Sound”, and now he’s bringing his crowning achievement back to fans on his Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour. The seminal album won over fans around the world with its pioneering blend of orchestral arrangements, glistening harmonies, and coming-of-age lyrics, and it's widely regarded as one of the finest albums of the 20th century. Now, Wilson has invited top-notch musicians and some old friends to help him recreate each masterfully composed song note-for-note from start to finish—all while ticket buyers sing along to each unforgettable melody. With original Beach Boy Brian Wilson performing each beloved tune from the album with his signature good vibrations, this can’t-miss event is sure to stay with fans for a lifetime.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Inglewood, CA in 1942, Brian Wilson honed his musical chops in high school by deconstructing hits by The Four Freshman on the family piano and teaching the harmony parts to his brothers. After befriending Al Jardine in his college choir class, the two had the idea of forming a band. They teamed up with Brian’s brothers, Carl and Dennis, and his cousin, Mike Love, in 1961 and began performing as The Pendletones. After changing their name to The Beach Boys, the group rose to phenomenal success in the first half of the ‘60s with massive hits like “ Surfin’ Safari”, “I Get Around”, and “Help Me, Rhonda”. As their principal songwriter, Wilson had written or co-written over two dozen hits and gained complete control over the group’s studio production by his 21st birthday. His ground-breaking use of the recording studio as an instrument led to increasingly elaborate and experimental songs. Wilson's talent and creative ambition reached new heights with the release of 1966’s Pet Sounds, an enduring classic that many critics consider one of the best albums of all time. Sadly, Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown trying to top the album’s brilliance and spent much of the next two decades in deteriorating mental and physical health. He recaptured the public imagination in 1988, however, when he released his critically praised self-titled solo debut. As luck would have it, that same year The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and scored their first number 1 hit in 22 years with “Kokomo”. Since then, Brian has continued to pursue projects at his discretion—both with The Beach Boys and as a solo artist—including his warmly received 2015 album No Pier Pressure.

    Fantastic Show!!!

by FLHXSrider on 2017-04-16Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

So glad I got tickets to see Brian Wilson. His band was incredible and even with 12 musicians (including Brian) they were very tight. The show started and ended with some classic Beach Boys tunes with the full Pet Sounds album in between. Brian doesn't seem to be able to quite hit all the high notes anymore but he is 74 years old which isn't too uncommon for that age. Al Jardine's son, Matt Jardine, handled the gaps really well. Towards the end of the show people were dancing in the isles. It was really a fantastic show and if I should ever get the opportunity to see Brian Wilson again, I wouldn't think twice.

    Great Vibrations

by Atee on 2017-04-16Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

This was a wonderful, almost magical evening of great music with familiar tunes from a very talented band. The magic was Brian Wilson and Al Jardine both being with us in person, and both sounding distinctively themselves. Their music is as Bob Dylan wrote ... Forever Young ... just as I and many others I'm sure felt. We all sang and danced along to the music during this marvelous evening.

Brian Wilson Pet Sounds - Must See

by Seto on 2017-04-16Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

If you're a Brian Wilson fan this is a must see concert! Brian Wilson doen't have the voice he once had but its always special to see a brilliant artist like him live. Al Jardine still sounds good and his son Matt is spectacular. The band sounded great - the music is timeless.

    Brian Wilson Pet Sounds Concert

by BruceLee111 on 2017-04-16Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Fabulous, well worth it, so much better than I expected. He started on time, the first set with the old hits was a wonderful surprise. After a short intermission, the Pet Sounds set was fabulous, I really liked how when the band walked off stage, then one player came out, genuinely thanked everybody who was a part fo the production and then introduced each player along with a different piece of music. The encore set was thrilling.

The Old Guys Have Still Got It!

by KaraokeKing on 2017-04-15Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The Band backing up this "Old" Beach Boy was huge, and it started off with several old Beach Boy Hits, which had the crowd rocking and cheering. There were some unknown guitar riffs before half-time, which were too new to relate to, but the crowd seemed to appreciate them. It was nice to be introduced to the band, three of which were with the original Beach Boys, and a Big Finish had people standing, clapping, singing along, and dancing in the aisles! Sadly, Brian looks as though this may be his last tour, with a younger voice taking over where his old songs were too strenuous for his aging voice.

    Super show!

by Bodine on 2017-04-15Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Super sounds by a dozen musicians in sync and having fun. Way better than what we were expecting. Only drawback was Brian Wilson's limited involvement... but, the music he composed, and it's performance by his hand-picked band... outstanding.

A taste of summer in April

by Anonymous on 2017-04-15Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

A solid show. Brian had a 10 piece band backing him up. He also had Al Jardine, and Al's son in the band who also contributed lead vocals while he played piano. He didn't talk to the crowd much which was okay because the music has been talking to many of us for as many as 50+ years. A fast start with several recognizable Beach Boy songs as well as a strong encore. The complete Pet Sounds album was a highlight especially put in its historical context as the Beach Boys answer to The Beatles Rubber Soul and Revolver albums. Paul McCartney even acknowledged the friendly rivalry to top them when it came for his contributions to Sgt. Pepper which turns 50 in June. An enjoyable show that presented a taste of summer to a chilly Edmonton April evening. It was impressive to see that the audience could get into the heavy California flavoured imagery given that the show coincided with the first Edmonton Oiler playoff game in 11 years which was against the San Jose Sharks. This fact played a huge role in the concert failing to sellout. A must see as summer comes closer to hear some of the best summertime music ever made.

Beach Boys come to life !!!!

by kdwasthere on 2015-08-04River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

When Brian Wilson walked onstage with Al Jardine you could just feel the magic in the air for the show. Watching the band interact and actually look like they enjoyed playing together got the crowd into the show from the first song on. Brian Wilson seemed to really enjoy other band members contributing to the vocals, almost like he realized this is what the Beach Boys always stood for. Overall an excellent show, thanks Brian, well done.

    Had the best time!

by Terrylynne on 2015-07-30River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

We didn't expect to like this concert as much as we did. But it was so fantastic. The band was tight and Brian was still such a joy to watch and listen to. Knowing how much of an inspiration he has been to other rock legends . . . well, it felt like we were in the presence of the genius we know him to be, and it felt like an honour to be there. To also see Al Jardine, along with his Son (who sings all the old high parts, and is excellent!) plus Blondie Chaplin was brilliant.

    A night to remember

by flasheduke on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

I've seen Brian Wilson several times, but this performance ranks as my favorite. Mr. Wilson was lively, animated, and full of the joy of music. This joy was palpable and infectious; quickly spreading through the audience. Seeing former Beach Boys, Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin was an extra bonus in addition to Brian's always excellent touring band.
