BRIAN WILSON IN CONCERT:

Visionary musical genius Brian Wilson first rose to international acclaim in the early ‘60s as the mastermind behind The Beach Boys’ “California Sound”, and now he’s bringing his crowning achievement back to fans on his Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour. The seminal album won over fans around the world with its pioneering blend of orchestral arrangements, glistening harmonies, and coming-of-age lyrics, and it's widely regarded as one of the finest albums of the 20th century. Now, Wilson has invited top-notch musicians and some old friends to help him recreate each masterfully composed song note-for-note from start to finish—all while ticket buyers sing along to each unforgettable melody. With original Beach Boy Brian Wilson performing each beloved tune from the album with his signature good vibrations, this can’t-miss event is sure to stay with fans for a lifetime.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Inglewood, CA in 1942, Brian Wilson honed his musical chops in high school by deconstructing hits by The Four Freshman on the family piano and teaching the harmony parts to his brothers. After befriending Al Jardine in his college choir class, the two had the idea of forming a band. They teamed up with Brian’s brothers, Carl and Dennis, and his cousin, Mike Love, in 1961 and began performing as The Pendletones. After changing their name to The Beach Boys, the group rose to phenomenal success in the first half of the ‘60s with massive hits like “ Surfin’ Safari”, “I Get Around”, and “Help Me, Rhonda”. As their principal songwriter, Wilson had written or co-written over two dozen hits and gained complete control over the group’s studio production by his 21st birthday. His ground-breaking use of the recording studio as an instrument led to increasingly elaborate and experimental songs. Wilson's talent and creative ambition reached new heights with the release of 1966’s Pet Sounds, an enduring classic that many critics consider one of the best albums of all time. Sadly, Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown trying to top the album’s brilliance and spent much of the next two decades in deteriorating mental and physical health. He recaptured the public imagination in 1988, however, when he released his critically praised self-titled solo debut. As luck would have it, that same year The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and scored their first number 1 hit in 22 years with “Kokomo”. Since then, Brian has continued to pursue projects at his discretion—both with The Beach Boys and as a solo artist—including his warmly received 2015 album No Pier Pressure.

Brian and the band were in fine form

by RedRobinsonRegular on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

He's getting older, but aren't we all? Brian was in good form, keeping the band on cue, dropping the odd quick witted comment and moving things along through the set list that included many of the songs we all came to hear. His voice was good - not great - but on pitch and on tempo, which more than I can say for many younger and "less travelled" musicians! Al Jardine and his son Matt (who sang the high notes really well) rounded out the rest of the vocals along with a very strong band of great musicians. Blonde Chaplin added some great vibes to the group when he came out, and things really got uptempo towards the end of what was a two hour concert.

    Brian Wilson is a Legend

by Helper1 on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

The show was fabulous! 2 hours of high energy music. A terrific band/orchestra/choir. They did the great Beach Boy oldies and some of the newer Brian Wilson songs. Al Jardine is strong and did a great job on the songs he was lead vocal on and his son Matt Jardine did the high parts and is a solid replacement for MIke Love. The encore alone was worth the price of admission.

    Brian Wilson does not dissappoint

by Caje on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

This tour Wilson and his entourage played mostly Beach Boy tunes with only a few songs from his latest album and a couple from his other solo projects. His band is second to none and practically musical perfection. This tour he gave long time band members Scott Bennet and Darian Sahnaja more profile by having them at the front of the stage and doing lead vocals on a couple songs. Long time member Jeff Foskett appears to be no longer with the band with the high harmonies now being handled very adeptly by Al Jardine's son Matt. Al Jardine is the only original Beach Boy who can still sing like he did in the 1960s and his performance was very enjoyable. Brian as always still struggles a little but met expectations and seemed to be enjoying himself. It was a rockin' evening with a level of musical sophistication only a highly talented songwriter with a stable of high end musicians could generate.

    Brian Wilson still AMAZING

by Ragbizns on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Even though BW has some trouble hitting those notes he is so famous for writing into his music his backup singers, along with the very talented Al Jardine and the great band pulled off an unforgettable concert. Lots of great memories from listening to an obviously gifted musician.

Brian Wilson - a musical genius

by Witz on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Wilson is one of the true geniuses of modern music. His melodies, instrumentation, and above all, his harmonies are a shining example of beauty in art. The band he put together was up to the task of producing live what Wilson can produce in a studio. They filled in beautifully for the notes that Wilson can no longer reach. The band and the music show the power and breadth of what a keyboard-driven band can do, rather than a guitar-driven one. Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney and John Lennon -- icons of our musical age.

    Brian Wilson was unforgetable

by BananaNose on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

I enjoyed every minute of the show....every second if fact. Apart from the the intimate atmosphere of the theatre itself, the sound was pristine showing all the intricate harmonies the top notch 10 piece band behind Brian provided. I have seen Brian twice before in Vancouver, once at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and at the River Rock and I always feel the same after the show..like having been in the presence of "greatness". There were moments when his voice obviously was not as strong as years ago but it made it almost more intimate and real. Anyone who has a chance to catch Brian on tour this summer, do not miss this opportunity to see a true icon perform the many many songs he has written. I cannot recommend him enough no matter what your taste in music.

    Brian Wilson ON-POINT!

by NoProfit on 2015-07-27River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Brian Wilson and his band were incredible! I've heard the horror stories, seen the YouTube videos, and read the negative reviews from the Beach Boys 50th and Brian Wilson & Jeff Beck tours. But, Brian Wilson's performance at the River Rock Casino Resort Show Theatre in Richmond, BC Canada on Friday, July 24, 2015 was of epic proportions and far exceeded my expectations. I have now seen all the living original Beach Boys. Brian Wilson sang, played his parts with confidence, and engaged the audience like a true band leader. Original Beach Boy, Al Jardine preformed with the skills of the seasoned pro that he is and his son Matt did an incredible job of the falsettos that Brian sang on the original Beach Boys recordings. From a vocal standpoint, the only thing missing from this show was Mike Love's baritone. The Brian Wilson Band preformed on point and aptly represented the Wrecking Crew that played on the original Beach Boys recordings. I most definitely saw an echo of the tall, shy, bass player, in the striped shirt that belted out the falsettos on those early 60s black & white Beach Boys television performance videos. As for the future I'm not sure if Brian will preform at this level again. If you do get the chance to see Brian Wilson on this tour, DO IT! I'm happy to say, "I was at THAT gig!"

Brians voice a tad weak but still was a very good show. Al Jardine was excellent, still has a strong voice. His son Matt has a great voice. A wonderful rendition of Don't Worry Baby. Lots of tunes from the Beach Boys catalogue. Only songs I didn't recognize were the ones off his new album but they were good tunes. It's a bit sad that the fans did't rush the stage more often as they did at the Mike Love led Beach Boys show. Thought Brians show was just as good as Mikes. But for all of Brians personal problems over the years I am glad he is able to perform and he did a wonderful job.

    Beyond your average concert

by Cujo3131 on 2015-07-07The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

I've been to over 20 Brian Wilson solo concerts in Canada and The States, and this was one of my favorites! First let me say, a Brian Wilson concert is a true event. He's not perfect, he doesn't hit all the notes anymore, he sometimes even forgets the words to his own songs...but that just makes the night more like a personal jam session with his band and guests and us the crowd, and that, to me, is worth more than the price of admission. It's more of a "Love In" than a concert. Most people there knew Brian's story, and by the number of standing ovations he received during the show I think most people were on the same page and understood what he's been thru and how lucky we are to have him touring again. He's lived enough life for 3 people... and he's accomplished enough musically for a dozen more. I like going to his shows for who he is! The performance is just an added bonus. Sorry! This isn't much of a review. But this was not the kind of concert you can review and say it was good or bad. More like I was happy to be there to see the man who revolutionized the recording industry back when recording technology was in its infancy. A true icon, regardless of his performance.

    Brian Wilson is a Marvel

by Beachbaby48 on 2015-07-07The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

I saw Brian and the Beach Boys 2 years ago in the 50th. anniv.tour . while he has slowed down he and his band can still really put on a good show. It was a bonus to have Al Jardine join him on stage. The warm up act did not do it for me . He was talented . However, his stly would have been more appropriate for Jose Feliciano or James Taylor. Brian's back up musicians were great. Very Talented. It was great to see him perform.

    Lousy Venue, mediocre concert!!

by Sammynorth on 2015-07-07The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Our $115 tickets (which, by the way, gave us the 20th row from the front in a main floor area of 26rows!!) said the concert starts at 7:00 PM. So naturally, we arrived before 7, to find a huge line-up of people - all with tickets - waiting outside to get it. We finally got in at about 7:30 PM, and then waited until ALMOST 9 PM before Brian Wilson and the band came on stage. We shouldn't have been so anxious, however, because when the DID finally start playing, so many of the numbers sounded terrible! Off tune, poorly performed. The crowd didn't seem to mind too much, however. They stood and clapped and cheered for almost everything! I guess they were applauding memories, not realities. Oh, well. My memories are still intact, and I don't have to pay $115 a ticket to hear them in perfect pitch.

Brian Wilson and some old friends

by DawWolf on 2015-07-07The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

This show was much better than the one he did with Jeff Beck a couple of years ago. Sharing the stage with Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin made much more sense. Highlights for me were the rarities that were brought into the light including two from the Friends Album - the bossa nova "Busy Doing Nothing" was a treat and 'Wake the World', a rare Jardine/Wilson song. Having Al Jardine on stage was a definite plus taking some of the pressure of Brian as Al's voice is as good as it was 40 years ago as i far as i could tell. A great show in all lasting nearly 2 hours - a good mixture of new, old and rarities. AND if Brian is to be believed, this could be his last stop in Toronto as 2016 supposed to be his last year of touring. Thank you Brian.

Brian Wilson and Jeff sell-out Beck?

by 6626 on 2013-11-05Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I would expect that when two stars are playing, they both would do their own material. For whatever reason Beck did none of his own music. Why oh WHy? I really disliked the concert it was just way too mellow for me. I almost fainted when they sang Row Row Row Your Boat...

The show featured separate set by Brian Wilson and his band featuring legendary Beach Boys Al Jardine and David Marks and by Jeff Beck and his band which featured bass, drums, and violin. Following this the two bands performed together which made for a fantastic finale. All in all a great show with some of Wilson's Beach Boys hits and rarities as well as the fantastic blues guitar of Jeff Beck.

    Brian Wilson, & Jeff Beck

by DukeDog on 2013-10-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Jeff Beck was incredible, as was his band. He is always great. Brian Wilson, should probably hang it up. His band was very good, and it was a decent set list, but at times Brian looked like he wasn't really into it. From the angle, and seat I had, I could see that his hands were hanging down and he was snapping his fingers part of the set, not playing the piano. He didn't play the piano all that much, and his vocals were just OK. Overall, it was just OK although an interesting pairing. I most likely wouldn't pay to see this pairing again.

Wilson & Beck - Ecclectic One of a Kind Show

by Bigtom on 2013-10-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Given that Brian Wilson nor Jeff Beck engage the audience much - this show is worth seeing for the quality of the musicians alone. Brian's group on this tour includes two of the original Beach Boys and with the rest of the band sound way better than the touring version of the Beach Boys. Jeff Beck is still one of the best and worth a listen at all times. This was definitely a catch them while you still can. Did not know exactly what to expect going in but the concert definitely exceeded my expectations.

by filski on 2013-10-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I came in with fairly low expectations for Brian Wilson and was pleasantly surprised with how great they were. Quality harmonizing and perfect timing. Jeff Beck stole the show of course because he makes every song a special event. When they played together, it was surprisingly entertaining.

    Brian Wilson/Jeff Beck

by Drummer4 on 2013-10-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

At first, I thought this is a unusual pairing for a concert. Who will be the headliner? One performing legend would have been sufficient but to have both on the same bill was truly amazing. Both Jeff and Brian gave an excellent inspiring concert. Pure harmonies from Wilson and his band vocals and Jeff's guitar created a heavenly choir!
