About

As they approach their twentieth anniversary, CAKE’s adherence to their original guiding principles has only grown stronger. Formed during the nineties as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no obvious peers, belonging to no school.  In addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their own solar-powered studio, which actually generates more power than is needed to run it, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse. CAKE’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, was released on their own Upbeat Records label and debuted on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #1 during 2011 -- making the album as pure an extension of the DIY aesthetic as ever attempted by an established act.

  • If you play like a bar band, charge like a bar ban

Hmmmm. What is there to say? To start with, if you are charging 40+ bucks for tickets, buy your guitar player an amplifier from this decade that works. As well, when you are a 'rock star' people are going to want to take your picture so keep your whining to a minimum. Too much talking, not enough rocking left the show liking the band less than I started. I've seen $5 bands down at Blues on Whyte with more soul, enthusiasm, positivity and better chops. A total letdown.

  • A long evening with Cake

For a band who has gotten so many great songs, I was a bit surprised to see that the band entertained us with pretty long monologues, had the crowd yell, sing and applaude and came up with about 7 or 8 songs that were rather new or not very good instead of delighting us with classics! I have to say that musically, Cake was great! The band is super tight and youo can tell that they are pros! However, we only heard about 13-14 songe all together in over 2 hours of show. It is unfortunate that the time was spent on other things than pleasing the crowd. I could tell that people around me were getting a bit annoyed at the fact that we were asked to clap and sing for minutes and minutes instead of listening to some music. Anyways, next time they are around, I hope we will all know the new songs as well as the older ones and I hpoe that I'll see them for what they are good at: playing music! Cheers!

Cake sounded great but they only really played for an hour and a half. I don't think that really constitutes "An evening with Cake" . They should have had an opening act to create some atmosphere.
