Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • The Oilers Rocked CUC!!

by DJJGr on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

The event was spectacular! The hockey was fast paced and a lot of fun to be a part of! The only concern we had was the seating. We had purchased wheelchair accessible seating as my wife walks with a walker and much to our surprise when we arrived at the arena, the elevator to the lower level was not working. It was very difficult for my wife to walk down and back up the stairs after the event. It was also sad to see a young lady in a wheel chair who couldn't see the game as she had to remain on the floor in her wheelchair as she was not able to get into her seat. All in all, the event was fabulous but something desperately has to be done with the seating.

  • Great game - parking a disaster!

by rmpsask on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

The hockey game was great - well worth the money. Concessions were vastly understaffed and the parking was a disaster.

  • Professional talent

by Flecker on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

When you get top calibre talent close to home is amazing. I realize Saskatoon is too small to host an NHL team but preseson is good, on another though I bet they sell out every game and get more fans than lots of those teams in the south of USA

For the price we paid we should be able to see more vets. I can pay less money for good seats in Edmonton and watch all the favourite players

  • Oilers game was good

by eber on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

Went another year and they had only rookies. Said I wouldn't go back if it was all rookies again - but both teams - especially Oilers - brought at least a full line of good vets and two starting goalies. Vets played really well and made the game totally. Will go back if they continue to bring some vets.

  • NHL in Saskatchewan!!

by HockeyFanJT on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

Nice to have an NHL game in SK since there is no team in the province. Lots of rookies but some of the well known names were there too. Even with the Oilers split squad, it was great to see Eberle, Smith, Nugent-Hopkins etc. The Hawks had the Toews brothers playing - starting the game on the same line.

  • by Anonymous on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

Glad that there were some of the big name players on the ice this time!!!!

  • The blackhawks played as good as rookies play.

by Teelee on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 3 out of 5

Travel to TCU place was gruelling and stressful. Parking was ridiculous. I'm not convinced any venue is worth the hassle. Truly an awful experience.

  • was okay

    by chunky44 on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 3 out of 5

Yes I went with my adult daughter, my husband was sick so I went. Bought tickets way back, $87.50, good seating, but was disappointed in the game, thought it was a bit boring and thought the players would skate a little faster for NHL. Bought a way over priced program at $20.00 thought maybe $10.00 was enough for it. Had bought the tickets for my husband cause his favorite teams are Edmonton and Chicago.

  • Game was great~Saskatoon was NOT ready!

by fiestyangel on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 3 out of 5

Wonderful game! However, Saskatoon definitely not ready for it! Line ups for refreshments were so long people missed full periods of the game! Then when one got to the line things like we have no buns or the food is all gone were common place! Then it was the exit of Credit Union WOW the traffic was so slow that it took well over an hour to even start moving out of the facility..I have attended major events such as Grey Cups with much more traffic and triple the attendance and have not seen such traffic or service...Sorry but if I was rating Saskatoon it would have to be very POOR..but the game was AWESOME!

  • Oilers-2 games 1 night?!

    by TNB144 on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 3 out of 5

Overall the excitement of the game was amazing. Oilers are our team and as soon as we heard they were coming to Saskatoon we bought tickets in great anticipation. When we got there knowing it was an exhibition game, we figured some of the players wouldn't be there, but 1/2 the team?! We paid to see the Oilers, and 1/2 of them were playing a different game in Edmonton. If Ryan Smyth and Eberele hadn't been there we would've viewed this event as a highly overpriced event with a lack of clear information as to who would be there. I am not sure that I would be willing to pay for the tickets again next year. Bring a real NHL game with a full roster. We will go to Edmonton next time. Great opportunity though for Saskatoon!!

  • Overpriced

by WonderNerd on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 2 out of 5

The game itself was ok, but being an exhibition game there were a lot of "name" players not in attendance, e.g. Hossa, Kane, Sharp, Horcoff, Hemsky, Khabibulin, etc etc. It was a treat to watch Nugent-Hopkins centre a top line with Eberle and Smyth, but they were really the only high spot of the evening. I don't mind the lack of stars as much as paying pretty much regular season prices for the privilege. Next time I want to see the Oilers, I'd be better off driving to Edmonton and paying nearly the same price there for a game with full teams.

  • by currly on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

IT was just great I would go again in the future, I wish we could get a NHL team in sask. that would be great

  • Great win for the Oilers

    by PG17 on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

Great excitement when a small market town gets to watch NHL level hockey live. stands were full and the Oilers won.

  • Youth review

    by axemen21 on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

Being an oiler fan it was nice to get to see a bunch of the prospects in action. I have read people say the Nugent Hopkins should be left to mature in the minors but he played a great game and did not seem to need any seasoning. I say let the kid play.

  • by Patrik on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

Best game seen since NHL exhibition games have been brought in to Saskatoon - nice to see a good variety of players - young and older. Very much enjoyed.

  • Great game for split squad!

by Valmar on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

I was ready to be disappointed with the lineups, having been to previous pre-season games at CUC, but was pleasantly surprised with the number of big name players in the game. Good tempo and lots of scoring opportunities on both sides.

  • by Anonymous on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

Good job oilers! Good luck in the future! Keep your heads held high!

  • Preseason Split Squad Hockey is a waste of $$$$

    by Unknown450 on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 1 out of 5

Preseason Split Squad Hockey is a waste of time and money, very overpriced for the quality of hockey. WHL preseason hockey shows more passion then this. Would not consider again or recommend to anyone, and whats sad is I am a hockey lover.

  • Access/Parking @ CUC - Still TERRIBLE

by BKautious on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

the event was OK, considering most of the players are not likely to skate with the final team. It was nice to see some of the players, but it is very dis-heartening to pay the amount for a ticket and not see MORE of the star players.....or at least the ones that will be on the final roster. the venue was still set to cater to the Blades, which was OK....but would have been nice to ramp it up a bit (NHL style) and give the Blades something to shoot for, as their program during the games is boring and A LOT OF WORK is needed to ramp up the game time atmosphere during games.
