Dallas Stars History
The Dallas Stars began play in 1967 as the Minnesota North Stars, earning two trips to the Stanley Cup Final. They relocated to Dallas after the 1992-1993 season and dropped "North" from their name.
The team immediately brought a winning tradition to Dallas, making the playoffs four of its first five seasons. Then came the back-to-back seasons that Stars fans will remember forever. In 1998-1999, sparked by center Mike Modano (the franchise's all-time leading scorer), off-season addition Brett Hull, and goaltender Ed Belfour, the Stars swept through the playoffs to defeat the Buffalo Sabres and clinch their first Stanley Cup Championship. The following season, the Stars again made the Stanley Cup Final, but lost to the New Jersey Devils in six games.
The Stars made it to the playoffs six more times over the next seven seasons, and went on to clinch additional playoff berths in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. They made it to the Final again in 2020, but lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game Six.
Since their arrival in 1993, the Stars have become one of the most successful sports franchises in Dallas, making 20 postseason appearances and capturing nine division championships and two Presidents' Trophies.
