Detroit Red Wings History

Founded in 1926, the Red Wings are one of the NHL's Original Six franchises. The team has captured 11 Stanley Cup Championships, most recently in 2008, as well as six conference championships and 19 division titles. As of 2023, the Red Wings have the most Stanley Cup trophies of any U.S.-based NHL franchise. Eight Red Wings players have their jersey numbers hanging from the Little Caesars Arena rafters: Leonard Patrick “Red” Kelly, Terry Sawchuk, Nicklas Lidström, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel, and Steve Yzerman.

The Red Wings were purchased in 1982 by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who invested their family savings in 1959 to open the first Little Caesars store in a Detroit suburb.

Little Caesars Arena is an anchor of a world-class sports and entertainment district known as The District Detroit and received the prestigious Sports Facility of the Year award at the 2018 Sports Business Awards Ceremony. The arena's construction also gave the city of Detroit the unique distinction of having the greatest density of professional sports teams—the Red Wings, Tigers (MLB), Pistons (NBA), and Lions (NFL)—in one downtown core in the country.

  • Thrilled when seeing Little Caesar's.

    by jingles6 on 2017-09-27Little Caesars Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I was amazed with a open mouth when I walked in and later saw other fans doing the same thing. It has a open type of concept as when your IN you still feel like your OUT. Being outside. It has a similar feel to another rink I was in but is more updated. Lots of places to eat. Stores to shop in. Things to see and do. A area outside for the fans to chat. The security check is outside for now. What happens when the winter gets here or rainy weather? The rink area is a sea of red. The Wings uniforms, the seats and the new Emblems they put on the Ice. Great place for a game. Not a bad seat and I sat in the corner for the first time. If you loved the Joe and are looking for any memories of it here, you wont find them. This is a new arena and a new beginning for the Wings. So nice to see them play in a new building. It felt strange at first. I thought I was on the road with them in another rink. Ticket prices have gone up but that was pretty much expected. The hockey game is the reason your here but you have to explore the entire arena itself as well. Just fantastic. We are now the newest and best in the league and other fans can come and gloat at our wonderful rink.

  • Went to see the Joe for the last time.

by BuAndDa on 2017-02-25Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Do NOT get tickets in the last 3 rows of section 227B; they're obstructed. The rise between the rows is not high enough to enable you to see about half the rink. The last row or two in the upper bowl at centre ice are obstructed, too, I recall from attending a game years ago. With luck, this problem won't exist in the new arena.

  • Awesome game

Besides the Red Wings winning, it was a great time at The Joe. I thought I would go to a game one last time at this venue and I was not disappointed! :) The fans know how to have a good time as well!

great game, great atmosphere, great service.. seats were pretty good ... but the railings blocked the view quite a bit.. this should be made very clear when the tickets are sold .. I probably would have looked for different seats

The Joe is the best atmosphere. Almost over though so get there before it is gone.

  • Have seen better games.

by JoeAnonymous on 2016-11-01Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

The ebb and flow of the game was lacking. Disappointed with the performance of two Original Six teams. As always, the fan experience at The Joe is excellent! Staff go over and above for fans.

  • Final Montreal game @ the Joe

    by electron58 on 2016-03-27Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Game was sloppily played, as only one team, the Red Wings, were the only team that had something to play for. That being said, the wifi really sucked. Made for a fairly long night.

  • by Wardy19 on 2016-03-16Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Good game love The Joe great historical place to see a game!

  • Opening Night Success.

    by jingles6 on 2015-10-12Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

This night at the Joe was one like I have never seen from the opening ceremonies which I never thought they were capable of at this rink, to the dominance of the Wings over the Leafs. The great saves of Jimmy Howard to the pressure put on by the Wings. Detroit had control of this game from the start.
