Detroit Red Wings History

Founded in 1926, the Red Wings are one of the NHL's Original Six franchises. The team has captured 11 Stanley Cup Championships, most recently in 2008, as well as six conference championships and 19 division titles. As of 2023, the Red Wings have the most Stanley Cup trophies of any U.S.-based NHL franchise. Eight Red Wings players have their jersey numbers hanging from the Little Caesars Arena rafters: Leonard Patrick “Red” Kelly, Terry Sawchuk, Nicklas Lidström, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel, and Steve Yzerman.

The Red Wings were purchased in 1982 by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who invested their family savings in 1959 to open the first Little Caesars store in a Detroit suburb.

Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena

The Detroit Red Wings have played their home games at Little Caesars Arena in the heart of downtown Detroit since the 2017–2018 season. Little Caesars Arena is an anchor of a world-class sports and entertainment district known as The District Detroit and received the prestigious Sports Facility of the Year award at the 2018 Sports Business Awards Ceremony. The arena's construction also gave the city of Detroit the unique distinction of having the greatest density of professional sports teams — the Red Wings, Tigers (MLB), Pistons (NBA), and Lions (NFL) — in one downtown core in the country.

    REd Wings Bruins game

by laxguy787901 on 2014-10-21Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Easy to access tickets at will call and excellent assistance from attendants throughout the venue. Very happy with the view from the seats despite upper bowl. No drink cup holders is a pain. Liked the bargain with the tickets -- hotdog and soda combo. Hot dog was awful. Cold and funny taste.

Joe Louis Great, Game Great,Leaf Fans Boorish/Rude

by warwiac on 2014-10-21Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Sat in the nosebleeds, but the view was still good, as you could read the names on the jerseys. The stadium is older so it was built before corporate boxes were the main priority, so your view is good. The concessions were also very adequate and the washrooms were also. There was a new huge washroom above the Timmy's concession that for some reason the drunks couldn't locate, so it was a quick trip for the sober. The worst part of the experience were my fellow Canadians who boo-ed and talked smack thru the american anthem. They were an embarrassment, but other than that it was a great experience. They do gouge you for leaf games however as the ticket price is double that for other opponents.

    Excellent Playoff Game

by jdunbar on 2014-04-29Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

The environment in Joe Louis is great. The fans are loud and make the game all that much better. Seeing a playoff game live is always a great experience, especially when the team I was cheering for wins. The overtime was a bonus as well. There are plenty of available food and drink areas, and the lineups for the bathrooms are long during intermissions, but over over all it's a great place to see a game.

    Great Barn!

by mckie on 2014-03-23Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

That is what an NHL arena should be like. Joe Louis Arena had the feel of an old time hockey rink, which you just don't see anymore. I'd highly recommend heading to a game there!

We had a great time. There were a few too many loud hammerhead Leaf fans but most of them were fun and respectful. Traffic was terrible after, but worth it, the game was awesome!

    Injury Riddled Wings.

by jingles6 on 2014-03-17Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

Tough game for the Wings. Many are out hurt. They held the lead until the Oilers pushed through with a goal. Then in OT a few shots but the suspense would begin with the ending of OT and the beginning of the shoot out. Wings win in the shoot out.

Wings put the Devils in their place.

by jingles6 on 2014-03-10Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

The Wings started out controlling this game. Then the Devils came back with much force. The Wings of Detroit did not want this go get away from them, as it almost did. They came back and put the fire out of the Devils and sprayed them with the heavenly Gods of hockey power.

    Venue is prepared for families

by hockeymom15 on 2014-01-21Joe Louis Arena - Detroit

The tickets we bought for 9 dollars. We were warned ahead of time that we had an obstructed view. They warned and we went anyhow. It was an obstructed view. IMO, these tickets shouldn't even be sold. Did not come across one person that worked for the red wings that was rude. Water and popcorn was less than other venues. Great time for a family. Not great seats even for 9.00. But we had fun.
