DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana Krall amazing

by CocoLoco on 2009-07-14Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Show was amazing. She played a long set, and her quirky and down-to-earth personality added to the exceptional music she created along with her jazz ensemble and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Unfortunately no intermission (would have liked to stretch my legs). I would definitely see her again.

  • Oh Diana !!!!!

by Luvdabluze on 2009-07-14Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Great stage presence and a terrific relationship with her audience. Made you feel like you were in her living room and just chatting while she sings and plays. Listening to her comments about the great Oscar Peterson was magical. She takes every song and makes it her own. Her phrasing turns each song into an original Diana Krall song. You know what the original is but it sounds different and most of the time, Better. A mix of old favourites and some stuff from her new cd in a perfectly paced evening in an intimate evening. If you have a chance, don't miss her!

  • Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!

What a treat to hear her perform at home. She was beautiful, flawless and a constant entertainer. I hadn't realized before how funny she is. It's a show I would see over and over and over. I hope it will be one of those shows available on dvd. I just can't say enough about her performance.

  • Krall is Kool

by Lookslikeher on 2009-07-14Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Having the VSO back up Ms. oh-so-cool Krall was fabulous! The Orpheum Theatre is elegant and funky enough to provide a great back-drop and Diana is lovely. She is witty and charming and tells excellent stories...and she sings beautifully too. I was hoping for more coverage of the titled concert album, but nonetheless, definitely worth attending. Our third concert with Diana.

  • Diana Krall was fantastic

by quiltmama on 2009-07-14Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana was warm and funny, which is not what I had expected. Her playing was outstanding, and the rapport between her and her band and the symphony was really respectful, and close. I loved having been part of that concert.

  • Professional and talented

by GerryG on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I attended the last concert of the series, in Vancouver, and Diana was obviously grateful to have completed her tour. She has a very attractive way of communicating with the audience -- she conveys an intimacy in her words and music, even though she was in a big theatre. Her music was outstanding. This lady has exceptional talent, and her show is right up there with the top two or three I have seen in my life.

Diana Krall is a wonderful performer. I do think she was exhausted on the Thursday evening performance. She made a couple of slips but handled it like the true professional that she is.

  • Diana Krall was stunning

by Gentleman on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana was geniune, she was herself, no fake showmanship. You felt like she was just talking to you as if you were a guest visiting her. I could go on and on. I go to various concerts all over through the year. I went to see Diana Krall because of my X-wife who worships her and is so...so much like Diana. Warm , caring etc. etc. This may sound untrue but Celion Dion is a cousin of mine and now she's not the only female singer that rocks my world.

  • Intimate night with Diana Krall

by jazzdabbler on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

A lovely and intimate evening spent with Diana Krall while she mesmerized us with her craft. Her "smoke and whiskey infused" voice, as she described it, is perfect for the pieces she covers, and she is starting to become more comfortable with sharing details of her private life with the audience. Simply charming.

  • Diana Krall love the red shoes

by happier on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Diana has a great way about her. from the intimate stories to the way she belts out the tunes she really is an amazing performer. Canada is very lucky to call her our own.

  • Diana Krall

    by NATTERJ4CK on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

PHENOMENAL! Enjoyed her music mixed with just the right amount of antidotes about her family & life. She is humble, charming and funny. Felt like I was sitting in her living room and visiting - she was the perfect hostess! Oh...and did I mention she has a wonderful voice and can play the piano too....?

  • Diana Krall is a 'must see'! A night well spent!

by rachel on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

In her black dress and sparkly red shoes, Diana Krall kicked off her concert with "I Love Being Here With You", reminiscent of her Live in Paris concert. Mixing old favorites with new hits, Krall pulled the audience in by sharing intimate stories of her family, inspirations, and unique tales. Her infectious laugh kept me mesmerized, making me feel as though I was sharing the music with her alone and not a theatre of hundreds. Mixing upbeat songs with sultry vibes, her concert had something for everyone. By far, the most romantic concert I've ever been to.

  • Diana Krall like Tupelo Honey!

by Chaqua on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

There's nothing like coming back home and for Diana, it brought the best out in both the music and conversation. Now, more than ever, sounding comfortable in her skin, her patter was as delightful as the music was heartfelt. She's a born storyteller, whether thorugh her fingers or her words, and an evening listening to her is one well spent -- and unforgettable! The sparkly red heels were icing on the cake!

  • Diana Krall: Hot!!

by AWfan on 2009-07-13Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

DK is at her best when playing the Jazz standards she cut her teeth on, and this performance was full of the classics we've come to expect from her. Her interaction with guitarist Anthony Wilson is what makes it all so special.

  • Wonderfull evening!

by mellowjazz on 2009-07-12Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The jazz was terrific...Diana Krall and her group produce a wonderfull sound: she is a great jazz pianist, and when she adds her voice, the music was enthrawling. I'm not sure why she included the Vancouver Symphony as a backup: thought that was a little over the top and somewhat unnecessary. Her song selection and presentation seemed to be very personal, which gave the show a very intimate feel. However, at times here introductions went on a little too long. But that's a minor quible. She seemed to be playing to a hometown audience, and in that context, she wanted to give it her all---I think she succeeded: it was a wonderful evening, a great performance!!!

  • Ya Gotta love Diana Krall

by kahiko on 2009-07-12Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

We were sensing the tension that the piano tuner was facing having needed to replace a string just minutes before the show started. Thunderous applause when she entered the room. We see her whenever we can. Her voice and pianistic abilities always leave us wanting more. She changes some old songs just slightly to give us a new way to hear her. Her humour fractures us. It is dry westcoast and we understand it. Her stories add a human touch to the performance. She is very much in love with her family; that love radiates from her. Looking forward to the next time.

Really great concert, I had a wonderful time. Excellent!

  • Diana Krall should sing / play piano, talk less

by Charming on 2009-07-12Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I was hoping for an almost constant flow of music...like listening to one of her CD's. She talked too much for me...it was almost like a therapy session for her. The audience paid to hear a concert, not to hear her chat.

  • Classic Diana Krall

by babybluecat on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

May 14th is our wedding anniversary, and I thought, what better way to celebrate than with 4th row seats to see the amazing Diana Krall. The Orpheum might be the best place of all to listen to Diana's superb vocal phrasings, and to enjoy her mastery of jazz piano. Although I prefer the more intimate concerts with just thepiano, bass, guitar and drums, my wife thought the symphony added another dimension.
