Down tore up the Kool Haus!

by MetalJessy on 2009-09-19Kool Haus - Toronto

What a show! By the time Weedeater was done their set the entire crowd was already licked and raring to go. Voivod tore up the place, and thanks to a wonderfully persistent girl who convinced two rather tall gentlemen to move from their spot on the bar I got a front row seat for the entire show. I was only there for Down, but I enjoyed the other two sets, especially the Voivod ft. Phil Anselmo songs which made the crowd go absolutely nuts chanting his name. And what a gentleman, instead of lapping up the praise during another band's set, Phil started a chant for Voivod which the crowd ate up. How humble of him. The venue was only about a quarter full at the beginning of the night, but quickly filled up between Voidvoid and Down and the push was incredible as soon as Down took the stage. People seem to forget that you can't force your way forward if there's no where to go. I had a few terrifying moments when I thought the front barricade was going to give way, but to my relief it held up. As far as the set? Absolutely wonderful, they played everything I wanted to hear. And the stage antics were hilarious. I think I saw everything fly on stage - two really awesome banners were thrown and both held up. One had the phrase "Being Down has become a part of my life!" drawn on a Canadian flag which Phil wrapped around his shoulders and wore until it fell off. Phil received a few joints (and some lighters) as well as a hat, a few t-shirts and even underwear! And during the last stretch of their set, i'm not sure how, but a random chick managed to climb up on stage. She was quickly hauled off by security, but it was funny to watch all the same. During their encore (Bury me in smoke) we got to witness a small changeup and Weedeater's bass player joined Down on stage. There were more people up there as well, but I had since abandoned my centre post in favour of the pit and wasn't much paying attention. After thanking the crowd and telling everyone that other venues and countries have a lot to learn from Canada, Phil got everyone to join in with a rousing rendition of "Stairway to Heaven", blew a kiss and left the stage. Totally awesome night. The Kool Haus was absolutely filled to the roof with rabid Down fans. Couldn't have asked for a better show. Thank you!

    Hail the Leaf

by Megawatt on 2009-09-19Kool Haus - Toronto

I almost didn't go to this show, having seen Down twice before, but I'm glad I decided otherwise. The band was in top form and high spirits, a relatively sober Phil Anselmo singing better and rambling less than he has in recent years, Great mix of material, weighted to the first album. The crowd loved them and they loved the crowd. Voivod was okay, but their singer was pretty hokey, almost a heavy metal parody and not someone I could take seriously. Weedeater was heavy but fairly monotonous.

    Now that's a metal show.

by Canuckerjay on 2009-09-19Kool Haus - Toronto

Missed Weedeater. Caught the Voivod set -- had never heard their stuff before but they have a great show. Not the most engaging on stage, but songs are nice & heavy. Down went on at 10:10pm, done at 11:30. They played a couple off the third album; more off of 'Down II' compared to when I last saw them in 2007. A Down show is always an awesome show. One of the best frontmen in heavy music at the helm, Anselmo always manages to engage his audience and infuse a lightning bolt of energy into them; even though he's not as agile as he was in the early years of Pantera before his back issues. Pepper Keenan's 'big fat Mack truck' riffs never cease to amaze, though he didn't seem to have the energy on stage compared to two years ago. . .might be the added weight he seems to have packed on. Bower's drum work is spot on as always -- an incredibly under-rated percussionist. Overall, a great show, but I would have liked to have seen a longer set. Down takes 1 hour, 15 min set and has you from the time they start to the time they finish. Last time, my friend had never seen them or heard an album and they kept her fully in the experience all through the show. Same this time, where she told me after that the set felt like it was 45 minutes long. In addition, I've never seen Down play a Pantera song. With respect to the other members' bands, at Down shows, you see Down shirts, but also tons of Pantera shirts. That's the most influential heavy band of the 1990s, and it's a shame to see 5 albums of material that Phil used to bleed out on stage just sitting on the shelf. A couple songs off of 'Vulgar' or 'Driven' albums, in a longer setlist would have been great.

    getting down in to

by unklephil on 2009-09-19Kool Haus - Toronto

great show last night weedeater, who i never heard of, i thought were great, very sabbathy, energetic and entertaining. voivod has been around forever they seemed to really have the crowd going, the guitar player in particular for me was really good. then down the energy and electricity in the room could not be denied, seeing phil in person is always surreal for me. i'm 38 years old but feel like i,m 10. there set was awesome, i was right at the front and left the venue soaked in sweat, definitely worth the trip from nova scotia. last time i saw them in montreal then went to youtube and saw stuff from their toronto show, it looked awesome. This time was the same toronto should be proud of themselves, everyone was going nuts, loving it, cant wait for the new cd to come out, hopefully soon. Dave.

    Down with DOWN!!

by michelle508 on 2009-09-14Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York

I recently became a fan of DOWN when my boyfriend introduced me to their music 6 months ago. I've always loved southern rock and metal so this type of music fits my taste perfectly. My boyfriend and I travelled from Toronto, Canada to NYC to watch DOWN play the Nokia Theater. What a great venue and an amazing band! It was definitely worth the trip. We had VIP tickets and were able to meet the band before the concert started. Very cool and casual - those guys made us feel comfortable. While waiting outside the Nokia Theatre for the meet & greet to start, Pepper Keenan and Jimmy Bower made a few appearances. Jimmy stayed out there with us for about 30 minutes hanging out and smoking a couple of cigarettes. Overall this was a great experience and I would recommend paying the extra money for the VIP Package. It was an experience I will never forget!!

    Phil & Pepper

by dlaff on 2009-08-28Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

I got the VIP package but I don't think it was worth it. They rush you in and out and you have no time to even say anything. Show was great though.

    Down still has it

by grover00 on 2009-08-21House of Blues Las Vegas - Las Vegas

Wow, these boys still have it, Phil can still get a croud that was pretty week to go absolutly crazy. And all the other boys still can really rip up those guitars and drums. alot of bands could learn alot from these boys and I recomend any heavy rock band to see these guys and learn how to please a croud. can't wait till the boys come through town again.

    amazing band, amazing singer

    by jlove999 on 2009-08-12Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

the entire experience from meeting the band to seeing anselmo play guitar for danava and sing along for a voivod song got me pretty pumped up. when down came on they played on the best live shows i have ever seen, after 20 or so years phil anselmo is still one of the greats. pepper keenan's shredding riffs and kick ass solos just added to the effect. and this was all without rex. there last song, in the thrall of it all, was amazing as the end of the show

    Down in top form!!

    by Abomb13 on 2009-08-12Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Down were in top form on Monday as they hit the stage at the Commodore in Vancouver, Phil has put his preaching days behind him and is now concentrateing on spreading the Rawk! Pepper and company seem to be really enjoying themselves up there and it really comes across in the music! Unfortunately Rex didn't make the show which was the only disappointment (if you don't count VoiVod). So in short if you are a Down fan you will not be disappointed! All the hits are played and then some. Watch for Phil to appear on stage with the opening bands!

Incredible show.....Voivod was amazing! Seeing Blacky for the first time was probably the highlight of my life. Down were great as well. What was really surprising was the great quality of the sound. It was loud, yet clear.
