  • Disappointing

by Microlass on 2011-05-02The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Fiddler on the Roof is a classic play. Unfortunately this version takes too many liberties with the original script, and alters the depth of the play. Efforts for comedic relief by the cast, especially Tevye, were overstated. Golde was miscast, difficult to hear and understand - her singing was screechy and atrocious. The characterization of Golde was an affront to women of that time and the hardships they endured. She was portrayed as a whining, nagging, unhappy woman - instead of the warm and loving mother in the original script. Equally disappointing was the omission of the song "Sunrise Sunset", a meaningful song and integral to the original Broadway classic. If you love the original Broadway classic, do not go see this version.

I saw the Fiddler on the roof this Saturday afternoon and I absolutely loved the performance. The cast was fantastic and my wife and I were tempted to book seats again for the evening show!

Thought we would like it and ended up loving it! Songs were all sing a long worthy. Dance numbers were all fun. Only room for improvement was the sound system in the theatre was not very clear.

  • Not bad but not great

The actor playing the lead was superb. However, the show didnt set the house on fire. The sets were average and the show just seemed to drag on too long.

FABULOUS! There really isn't much more to be said. Everything was FABULOUS. One thing that I really appreciated was that it really followed the story line of the movie unlike musicals like Grease whcih made totally unneccesary changes.

  • Fiddler was humorous, and enjoyable.

Fiddler was humorous, and enjoyable. The first act had the audience in stitches and the singing and acting was very well done. Act 2 was not as entertaining, but was nevertheless a great performance.

Loved the music, the story and the whole production.

  • Great performance, great message :)

It was my first time seeing the Fiddler on the Roof. I was happily impressed with the production, story and music. I'd totally recommend it. The performance of all the actors is great, but the performance of John Preece as Tevye (the main character) is AMAZING! The story is a classic, with a great message about acceptance, love and forgiveness. I'd watch it again anytime :)

The actors, sets, songs and dances were great. To me, right from trying to park for 45 minutes to the difficulty in seeing the actors faces almost guarantees that I will not attend this theater again. We were in the 23rd row and too bad no binoculars because all we saw were images. My wife and I agreed that the production of Fiddler On The Roof at the Hale Theater a few years ago was absolutely more enjoyable then at ASU Gammage. I know there is nothing anyone can do about the size of the Gammage but it is just too much.

  • Fiddler on the Roof was the bomb!!

Loved it, loved it, loved it! From the very first song and dance number "Tradition" to the end it was fabulous. The actors were wonderful and the character Teyve was a delight. I took my 82 year old mother and my husband (who I was worried about) and they both thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great night.

I am not an avid theatre goer; however, I have viewed about 30 Broadway plays, some of them 2 or three times. Whenever I see a show a second time I try to keep an open mind as we tend to appreciate and/or expect identical performances on subsequent visits. I felt this overall presentation was rather weak. Initially I felt that the actors were rushing through the songs, especially at the start of the first act, namely the first two scenes Tradition and Matchmaker. I was especially disappointed by the performance of John Preece. I felt his voice was weak during – If I Were a Rich Man. I believe that that song alone damaged the remainder of the performance. The voice of Golda was somewhat feeble and disappointing. The most electrifying scene of the whole play should have been The Dream. Fruma-Sarah was difficult to listen to, as there was little emotion in her voice, besides that fact that she looked more like a clown than a ghost. Generally, I understand that because this is a travelling group, the set would not be as elaborate as a show on Broadway, but I did expect the caliber of the acting to be much better than what was delivered.

  • Excellent show! Loud distracting light technicians

by Anonymous on 2010-12-01Hamilton Place Theatre - HamiltonRating: 4 out of 5

The show was excellent! Smooth transitions. Great script, characters played the humour very well. Wonderful voices on most of the leads. Unfortunately, we were at the back of the theatre and the lighting technicians behind us spoke loudly through most of the show and they were very distracting during all of the quiet moments on stage.

Wonderful live theatre. It was everything we expected. Music made you tap your feet. Set was beautifully done and costumes fitting for the era. This is the third time we have seen this musical and would go again.

For the 2nd time as well as seeing the movie, the performance still leaves us wishing for more. An amazing show and one well worth the money

  • Tradition!

by Hugh on 2010-11-30National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

This current revival of Fiddler on the Roof is well worth seeing and captures all the vitality of the only previous production I ever saw - London 1967 with Topol - and of the Norman Jewison film. Tevye played by Jan Preece is strong and solidly anchors the story - as he must. The cast, sets, musicians and choreography are all strong - it's not top of the line but for a touring production it is one of the best. What is crucial to the production is Tevye's great strength of character and his capacity to allow his love for his family and his people to help him through events over which he has little or no control. He represents the strength of human endurance, of capacity to change without surrendering core principles and of hope for a better future in the midst of great adversity. The three oldest daughters are also well cast - for it is they who must challenge Tevye to accept a changing world - but not at any cost.

  • Fiddler on the Roof November 28.

    by MarkW123 on 2010-11-30National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

For the most part good, but: - Orchestra was VERY loud, using almost twice the power it really needed to fill Southam Hall. Whether it was an over-exuberant conductor and/or musicians, or the sound board was set too loud I don't know. - Throughout "Tradition", both the main number and the reprises, a drum cut in, again very loudly. The drummer must have been using a motorized beater to keep tempo and volume, both preset ahead of time. - "The Dream" was a bust; their Fruma-Sarah was nowhere near as intimidating as others I have seen, notably Ruth Madoc in t he 1971 movie, who had a blood-curdling scream. - A good Motel, much better than his movie counterpart Leonard Frey, who had a nervous laugh that he never shook free of long after the character should have shed it. Also a very menacing Constable, more so than his movie counterpart Louis Zorich. - "The Rumor" was dropped altogether, as it was from the movie.
