  • Fiddler on the Roof was Wonderful

by Miscoucher on 2010-11-30National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

A great date night. Convinced my husband, who really prefers sporting events to musicals, to come and he enjoyed it as much as I did. He promisesd to come to more musicals :)

  • Fantastic!

Great show! I thought the singing, acting and music was superb. My kids sat through the whole thing enthralled, even though they are only seven and four. Bravo!

  • Fiddler was Spectacular

by Palymema on 2010-11-30National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Fiddler on the Roof, the story of a poor Jewish family of 5 in Anatevka was wonderful to see. The musical numbers, many of which we have heard many times, were nevertheless performed flawlessly and with such emotion. The sets, although sparse (it is the old country afterall), were beautifully created and while they added to the production, never overpowered the actors, leaving the focus on the perfomance and not the sets. Tevye, the main character played by John Preece stole the show. His witty one liners, his quotes 'from the Good Book' and especially his facial and body expressions when he was speaking with God throughout the play kept the audience in stitches. The first half of the Fiddler play is very charming and light, it is unfortunate, that the story doesn''t end on a happier note and lacks a final song/dance number like most other theatre performances would.

The whole play was wonderful and I see it any chance I get whether it is Broadway of Highschool. I took my grandchildren who are 6 1/2 and 91/2 and they enjoyed the play very much. This was a great way to introduce them to live theatre. There were times though when I found it hard to hear 'the mother's' speaking voice.

  • Fiddler was a wonderful way to spend a Sat

by leadhand on 2010-11-29National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The play from the opening scene to the final curtain call was so well done. Having age appropriate actors made the play believeable. I have always enjoyed Fiddler. It is a timeless piece of historical teaching.

  • Average performance, incredible play

by JVAL on 2010-11-29National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Had great expectations for my first broadway show in years and came away slightly disappointed. The main actor seemed tired and without energy... Loved the play, just wished for more energy. And apparently I wasn't alone in my thoughts as there was no standing ovation. I'd love to go see it again when the energy level was higher.

  • Timeless and entertaining.

by Mashigene on 2010-11-29National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Classic works of art are timeless. Fiddler on the roof falls into this category and this touring production does not disappoint in maintaining the elements of timelessness and entertainment. The production values are of high order and the pacing is superb. John Preece relays Tevye's (and most Jews' existential angst) in a well-oiled, although at times mechanical manner (he has after all performed the role over 1500 times). Nevertheless, he succeeds in drawing us into the world of the shtetl of those times in keeping with the musical's perfect melding of libretto, lyrics, and music. There are however some week spots in terms of the cast. This however is a matter of what threshold in acting a touring company with diverse experience and skill must meet. Overall an entertaining interpretation of this classic work of art whose music and production delivers on value.

  • A unique musical

by etheca on 2010-11-29National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was not exactly what I was expecting. It was great to see this "classic" musical. My 15 year old daughter agreed that the show had a sad ending and it ended quite abruptly. It was worthwhile and I recommend it. I would also recommend that you know the story line before attending.

  • Tevye was worth the price of admission

Fiddler On The Roof was Fantastic from the Performers right down to the settings and how they were changed. I rank it in the same catagory as Mama Mia! I loved every minute of it. I would Go again and again to see it.

  • Needs some fiddling with

by Anonymous on 2010-11-29National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

While the lead actor was brilliant, other cast members fell short. The sound quality at times made me feel like I was watching a foreign film with voice-overs. The use of the spotlight was strange and distracting; the production should work around its use.

  • Excellent presentation

Just loved every minute of it. Found it a bit too long - but still enjoyed it all. The cast were just fantasic.

This production was first class and a very enjoyable show, although the story line left me a bit depressed - no happy ending.
