Fiddler was Spectacular
by Palymema on 2010-11-30National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5Fiddler on the Roof, the story of a poor Jewish family of 5 in Anatevka was wonderful to see. The musical numbers, many of which we have heard many times, were nevertheless performed flawlessly and with such emotion. The sets, although sparse (it is the old country afterall), were beautifully created and while they added to the production, never overpowered the actors, leaving the focus on the perfomance and not the sets.
Tevye, the main character played by John Preece stole the show. His witty one liners, his quotes 'from the Good Book' and especially his facial and body expressions when he was speaking with God throughout the play kept the audience in stitches.
The first half of the Fiddler play is very charming and light, it is unfortunate, that the story doesn''t end on a happier note and lacks a final song/dance number like most other theatre performances would.
