  • Too peppy!

by wantedtocry on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

I thought the orchestra and acting was good, but the singing was less than desired/expected. All my favourite wistful songs were sung at a fast pace and it made it difficult to make the emotional connection I craved (after seeing the movie and other stage productions). I was prepared to laugh and cry, and I hardly did either.

It was fantastic - great acting, singing and dancing, and the set was amazing. Well worth the money. My teenage daughter and I both loved the show.

  • Fiddler on the Roof Only Fiddling Around

by dragonlady1 on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

I love the Musical itself, and enjoyed the vocal and instrumental performances very much. In addition, it is a bit of my family history, since my mother's family was driven out of Southern Russia when these events were occurring, and came to Canada, so it rings several bells in my head . In this production, the vocals were powerful, varied and full of character. My training is also stage and costume design, and so I was busy analyzing and admiring the sets, changes, and costuming, for both practicality and innovation, all the way through . The only bit of disappointment was Tevye's rather superficial approach to the issues he faced. Perhaps he was tired or in a hurry on the evening we saw the performance, but the flavour of his discussions with God and his arguments with himself were not nearly as amusing, thought provoking or even as suspenseful as many performances I have participated in or seen. Tevye is a skeptic who has cautious value for the past, but is willing to entertain the future, no matter what kind of adjustment it may force him to make. In this day and age, he is an Everyman to philosophers or even thinkers and open-eyed observers. Theodore Bickel didn't seem conflicted OR progressive, he just seemed to want to get it all over with.

The best portrayal of Tevye I have seen to date. There was nothing I didn't like about the show; I wish I could go again.

  • Fiddler on the Roof was wonderful!!!

by LornaBL on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

What a show!!! The cast was incredible. They definitely deserved the standing ovation that they received that night. I am still humming the tunes...2 days later. Theodore Bikel made the character his own...he was simply amazing. The storyline was so funny, given it is set in a war era. What a great show...I have seen it once before and would see it again in a heart-beat!! Abosolutely, loved it!!!

  • FOTR was an incredible experience

by mandpda on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This show had lost nothing over the years. The story was as relevant today as it was when it opened. Many travelling shows have lost their sparkle by the time they get to Alberta. Bikel and his company gave us the complete experience in our Jubilee Auditorium. 100% unforgettable! Truly every eye cried and hands clapped till they were sore.

  • Fiddler on the Roof - Calgary

by SteponMe on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Fiddler on the Roof was amazing, but what happened to Topol?? On ticketmaster it said this was his "farewell" tour? Theodore was still good, but he didn't seem to have the same energy....I was really looking forward to the whole Rich Man dance! The body shaking...strong and loud voice... the sound could of been way louder as well! Other than that it was really well done! the movement of the set designs was well done!

  • Great show Fiddler on the roof

by importedcalgarian on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The show was wonderful and very entertaining. My sons enjoyed it who are in their twenties. The only problem was the sound quality was not very good. We had good seats first balcony first row center how ever the the sound was not very clear. The costumes and acting were very good as well as the scenery. I would just like the quality of sound better.

My wife and I went to the Sunday matinee and we were wowed at the fantastic performance of the entire cast, and the orchestra as well. It was an entertaining funny and wonderful experience. It was an anniversary I think neither of us will forget!!!

Wonderful story, but the music can feel a bit old-fashioned to younger audience members. Does a fantastic job of conveying the culture & people of the times, but not nearly as "showy" as other show that have come through Calgary.

  • Amazing Fiddler!

I had forgotten that there were so many great songs associated with this story. This was such a great play and the characters were wonderful. Theodore Bikel is truly amazong in his role as Tevye espically since he is 85 years old.
