  • Fiddler on the Roof was absolutely OUTSTANDING!

by hypermama on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

I grew up with my Grandmother singing the tunes - the instant the show started I could hear her singing along with them. I could watch the performance over and over and not be bored or disappointed. The humour injected to keep the audience interested and amused was fabulous.

The performance was wonderful and thank you to the Jube for having fm systems to borrow. I am hard of hearing but using the listening device from the Production Services, I could every word from the stage.

  • Great to get reacquainted with Fiddler on the Roof

by bestdancer46 on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Even though my husband and I were not able to get the greatest seats, we quite enjoyed ourselves at the Sunday matinee performance. The sets were amazing. The costumes very realistic and the company's singing talent as a whole was quite stellar! We found it to be a bit long with only one break and it was quite warm. Other than that it was a great afternoon spent with an old friend!

  • Great Production, but seemed small

by Empher on 2010-01-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyed the production Fiddler on the Roof, but I was a little taken a back by the lack of sound and what seemed like a small stage. The singing and dialogue were hard to hear at times and the slightest movement from people around us would drown out the stage. The lighting was low but understandable given the nature of the story line. What did surprise me though was what seemed like a small stage - this was my first "Broadway" type production and I expected it to be full and large - maybe it was the sound more than anything. The story was unforgettable and the talent was extraordinary and I was moved by the players on more than one occasion. Excellent production, just a little low on the sound.

A timeless musical that is entertaining for the whole family. This was our first time and I would definitely see it again without hesitation. The main character's role (Tevye the father) was the anchor role and he played it marvelously. Well done!!

I love everything about Fiddler on the Roof, the story, the characters, the setting. I grew up listening to the LP and even saw Fiddler on Broadway as a child. This performance was very well done, the singing, the performers and the set were great; all in all I really enjoyed this production.

Attended the o1/16/10[evening performance ] and was totally blown away. Tevye did an amazing job of captivating the audience. His one liners had us in stitches for the whole show. Kudos to the performers,as everyone of them did an absolutely incredible job of putting the story across to the audience. Kudos also to the crew involved in the production as the changing of scenes was awesome. VERY WELL DONE.

  • Fiddler On The Roof.....A Wonderful Evening!

This was my first time seeing Fiddler live on stage. I was not sure if it would have the same impact that I experienced with the Movie. I was not disappointed. It is one of those timeless stories . My daughter who is 24 thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great Play.........fabulous actors. I would have liked the sound to be a little louder. Hard to hear the speaking at times. You shouldn't have to strain at all to listen. Other than that it was alot of fun.

  • Fiddler on the Roof seemed fiddled with

by yturnips on 2010-01-17Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Overall, the Fiddler on the Roof was very good and is a play that tugs at so many emotions. It is one that captures what life was like for Jewish cultures throughout the world in 1917 - before Israel was reinstated as a nation in 1948. They were always going through some kind of hardship and leaned on traditions within the family and village to maintain some sort of normalcy within their lives - this was displayed throughout most of the play. What was missing in this rendition was the passion of Tevye (played by Theodore Bikel), the emotion of having his whole world changed in such a short time - all that he knew of the social structure was ripped from him in just a few months. He had his traditions, his way of life and family torn apart and that just did not seem to come across to the audience. He was saying all the right lines but his delivery was just not passionate enough. He just did not seem to understand the man he was portraying - just didn't seem to "get it". While there were a lot of moments that were good during the play we also noted that the songs and delivery of a lot of lines were rushed, missing some of the essence of the emotion of the play. This is still one of my favorite plays and there were many bright spots. Golde (Susan Cella) was terrific in playing the role of the Mama, who really holds the family together. Yente, (Rebecca Hoodwin) the matchmaker, brought great wit and good comedic timing to the role. The orchestra, conducted by David Andrews Rogers, was excellent. I would definitely recommend the play but would like to see someone else play the role of Tevye, someone who captures the essence of the character as close as Topol did.

Theodore Bikel was absolutely tremendous - voice, timing, presence - everything. The next most impressive thing was the set changes - really clever and artfully done. Thank you for a great experience.

Tevye was good - we were worried that the 3 hr show would be too long, but it flew by. Very enjoyable evening!

  • Fiddler on the Roof

Great Show, fantastic music, lots of humor. Wished Mr. Topol played Tevie, although Mr. Bikel was also great, I was hoping to see the Actor from the movie. Mr. Bikel has played this role over 2000 times and was excellent in it and so were the others. Started right on time, so make sure you are there at least 20 minutes before to park the car.

  • Amazing Show!
