About

After more than 30 years of a lifestyle that often required lots of time on the road, country legend George Strait has saddled up for what he says will be his final tour, a two-year outing dubbed The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.

More than 20 farewell concerts take place between January and May of 2014, and the shows -- many of which will feature a big-name special guest such as Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Martina McBride, or Sheryl Crow -- are proving to be hot tickets as fans celebrate the storied career of the country mainstay. He announced his retirement from the road during a September 2012 press conference in Nashville, and played more than 20 farewell shows during early 2013.

Strait doesn't plan to ride into the sunset -- he's just done with long tours. He recently renewed his deal with MCA Records, so he'll keep releasing new music and plans to also play select concert dates in the future. But grueling trips aboard the tour bus are in his rearview mirror.
After the Urban Cowboy ethos dominated country music in the late '70s, Strait emerged in the early '80s with his take on classic country stylings, and is often credited with paving the way for other neo-traditionalist superstars like Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam, and Randy Travis.
Strait's catalog includes timeless hits like "Amarillo by Morning," "All My Ex's Live in Texas," "Love Without End, Amen," and "I've Come to Expect it From You."

A 2006 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait's remarkable career has included a record 60 No. 1 songs on the country chart. He holds many other country sales records, including most No. 1 albums and most gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums. Only Elvis Presley and The Beatles have more combined gold and platinum albums in their catalogs.

A native of Poteet, Texas, south of San Antonio, Strait grew up in neighboring Frio County. He first took up music in high school as a member of a rock garage band. After a stint in the Army, he  earned an Agriculture degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos while playing in a bar band that performed around central and south Texas.

Strait signed with MCA Records in 1981, after Erv Woolsey, who ran one of the bars Strait's band played, urged Nashville talent scouts to check him out. Woolsey went on to become Strait's manager.

    very appropriate

by portbmc on 2014-06-04Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

From the time we left home until we returned home was a great experience. The show was awesome starting at 6 with Kassidy Pope, great performer, followed by Tim McGraw as many times as I have seen him, he only gets better! My first time to see Faith Hill was not a disappointment for sure, this was followed by the King himself George Strait, it was an awesome show well worth the effort and money! Event staff were friendly and effective I even saw a staffer ask a young fellow to put out a cigarette and he did it so the person smoking was not offended, most staffers just ignore smokers which ticks me off because I hate to see people smoking in and around others in public when they are not suppose to be smoking! Another thing that I found strange was the number of people who were moving up and down stairs constantly probably going for beer, if you pay the bucks to enjoy the show sit down and enjoy the show they were delivering the beer right to the seats! It was easy to get out of the parking lot as well!

I'm so glad I got to see George Strait this one last time! He is such a genuine person and it really shines through on stage. He has such an amazing voice and with all his number one hits how could his setlist be anything but incredible!? Love the part of his show where he gives away new homes to the soldiers who have fought for their country, such a fantastic way to show his support and love! Unforgettable show!

    George remains King!

by KathyCanuck on 2014-06-03Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Great show! Wish George could have sung all 72 of his 'greatest hits', but he hit some of the best ones. Quite a venue and who knew there were so many East Coast fans. Gracious as always, I hope that the cowboy won't ride away for ever! Just wish I could be there at the final show in Arlington too!

    George Strait did not disappoint!

by drlorna on 2014-06-03Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Played for 2.5 hours strait! This concert was one of the best! He didn't play some of the songs that we loved the most but that is only because he has so many hits, otherwise it was phenomenal! Exceptional show

George Strait and Chris Young were unbeilivable

by Aula on 2014-04-26Tacoma Dome - Tacoma

The crowd went wild when George came out strutting his stuff. When George left the first time the crowd stomped their feet so loud and so long that I thought the building was going to cave in. I have always been a big George Strait fan. I'm so glad that my husband and I finally got to see him. We travel from British Columbia, Canada and it was well worth it. He played his heart out and everyone in the Tacoma Dome left with a feeling of gratitude towards a man that has given so much of his life to music so that we may enjoy it for years to come. Thanks George From one of your many, many fans

    George Strait was amazing!!!!

    by Charlene974 on 2014-03-04Prudential Center - Newark

We travelled from Newfoundland Canada to Newark New Jersey just to see George Strait. We purchased VIP tickets. It was an amazing experience. The food, gifts, seating, etc was all excellent but the king himself was out of this world. Both him and Martina Mcbride were awesome.

George Strait is a consummate professional! He has his stage set up so that everyone has an equal amount of time in his presence. I travelled over 2000 miles to attend this concert with my husband and we were not disappointed. He is an amazing performer!! Martina McBride also blew us out of the water! She is an awIesome performer. It was like a two for one concert from 730 - 1130!!! Wish he wasn;t retiring!!

KING OF COUNTRY - totally worth it !!

by Debassige on 2014-02-18The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

Well, I just love George Strait, he's been my all time country favourite, since I first heard his first songs. I just can't believe he still singing off big hit, let alone Number One Hits. This valentines day was one of the best. My husband bid on the meet and greet and won, so I could meet George Strait. What an emotional evening when they said, "you won the meet and greet". He sang all his hits and more and sang to all his fans, at four corners of his stage. His Band - Wow, they are amazing as well. If i could I would go again before "The Cowboy Rides Away 2014"

    George is a class act!

by DNLRichard on 2014-02-17The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

The show was amazing, this is the third George Strait show we have seen, and the show itself is amazing ... The venue was good to a point, much more organized than the HSBC centre in Buffalo. We got in the doors and we were able to go right to our seats. The seats however were tiny and had no foot room whatsoever. Also, people didn't come on time to see the opening act and it was very distracting to be getting up an down in our seats to let people through. Little Big Town did not play their most favourite song of mine, so that was a little bit disappointing. Overall great show, just need better seating.

George Strait is the best ever.

by Toogie on 2014-02-17The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

From the moment that he steps on that stage until the lites go out in whatever venue he is playing and I am there to see him, he just captures my heart. And this time he literally stole it because this is the last time that I will be seeing him...........KING GEORGE did not stop giving to the audience at the Palace in Auburn Hills...........as he walked off stage taking my heart with him, I left the Palace taking wonderful memories of him with me......... My husband was with me and for me it was absolutely wonderful to spend Valentine's Day / Evening with my 2 favourite men.................

I bought tickets to a country music show and got the best show ever! My wife turned me on to country music 7 years ago and love it! I have been to many shows where the rock music portion turned me off! Not friday night. George Strait is a class act and will be missed!
