Floyd the Barber didn't stand a chance!

by zulubanjo on 2011-07-27The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

What have they been doin for 8 yrs? Getting amazingly better thats what. WOW! Whole show was heart on sleeve top drawer-while the crowd dug it the only drawback 4 me- could have done without white rabbit finale. Stuck out like a flawed piece of residual lineoleum crustatious novelty matter on open mic nite. (What next stairway to heaven?) Sorry I digress-anyways Rawlings spent the evening unhinging jaws, while the woman with a coal miner's soul showed how deep she can go. Scarlet to Fly Away- the best show I have ever seen, ( better than Emmylou, Buddy, Patty, U2, Black Keys, Sound Garden, Springsteen and dare I say it, even Jerry Douglas...)

    Splendid Sam and Gleeful Gillian

by dolphinwink on 2009-07-17Concerts At Marymoor - Redmond

Although we didn't arrive early enough to see the whole concert, Patterson Hood & the Screwtopians were a very enjoyable, with surprisingly thoughtful lyrics and unforced rock riffs. In the audience's eyes, the tiny chord and lyric slip-ups in Iron & Wine's set were mere freckles, and Sam Beam's self deprecation added to the intimacy of the large-crowd event. Those who stood closer to the stage may have had more fun because they were in earshot of Beam's quiet, offhand remarks. His performance was lovely. Delivering a slightly less earthy performance, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings satisfied the easygoing audience with hits like "I'll Fly Away," and my personal favourite from their set, "My First Lover." Concert organizers and performers were quite considerate about adhering to the schedule, and the alcohol consumption did not escalate to rowdiness, which often plagues other summer festivals. Next year, it would be wonderful to encourage collaborations between performers (imagine Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings, and Sam Beam jamming on a banjo tune!). Thank you!
