About

IAN ANDERSON IN CONCERT:

Progressive rock icon Ian Anderson rose to fame in the late '60's as the frontman of legendary prog outfit Jethro Tull, and he continues to carry on the band's legacy today. The eccentric singer and all-around musical talent elevated the flute to rock and roll prominence with his prodigious playing on classic hits like "The Witch's Promise" and "Living in the Past", and he continues to delight fans with virtuosic flute-playing at his mesmerizing live shows. Although Jethro Tull officially retired their name in 2011, fans can still catch Anderson on a highly anticipated tour that features the late great band's biggest hits as well as cuts from his 2014 album Homo Erraticus.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Scottish-born, British-raised Ian Anderson was exposed to music at an early age through his father's big band and jazz records. He formed his first band Blades in 1962, and a few years later he took up the flute as a way to set his sound apart from a musical landscape already saturated with hallowed guitarists. In 1967 he moved to London with the band, which underwent numerous name changes before finally settling on the name Jethro Tull, which had been suggested by a booking agent. The band's 1968 debut album This Was fared relatively well, but their 1969 sophomore album Stand Up launched them to international superstardom, topping the UK Albums Chart and establishing them as pioneers of the budding progressive rock movement. A string of critically and commercially successful albums followed over the next three decades, including a number of popular solo albums by Anderson. In 2012 Anderson released TAAB2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock, a sequel to Jethro Tull's epochal 1972 album Thick as a Brick, and in 2014 he thrilled fans with the announcement of a tour featuring the legendary band's greatest hits performed alongside his album Homo Erraticus.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

" Great show. Being a Jethro Tull fan this was a real treat to see. Brought me back in time. This was a show all would enjoy.

" This was a great show. Ian Anderson is a world class musician who's showmanship is on full display. Ian is agile and puts on the full show!"

" I wasn't sure what to expect at his age. But dang this show was such an unexpected surprise. I could not get enough of Ian's flute playing. It gave me goose bumps. The show lasted at least 2 hours with one encore, another unexpected surprise."

    Hmmmm

by Lisaiz on 2013-10-20Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

My husband and I went to see this group. It is the first time we ever left a concert early. Ian Anderson hardly sings. It was almost like they had no plans whatsoever as to what they were going to do onstage and just said ' let's wing it' . We did not enjoy it at all. At the intermission, we decided to just leave. The price for parking at Copps or Hamilton Place was 25.00.!!!! Ridiculous !!! It was pouring rain out so we did not want to go looking for cheaper parking, so had to bite the bullet and pay the 25.00.

    time to retire?

by juiceman on 2013-10-20Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

I have been a HUGE fan of Ian Anderson and Jethro tull since the early '70's, in fact the very first concert of my life was of them at Maple Leaf Gardens. I've seen them probably 10 times since. That being said and with the greatest respect, I must say that if he expects to continue recording and touring , Ian has got to allow an alternate singer to take over 100% of those duties. While you're at it, hire a singer who can also add musically to the line-up.

and now for something completely different ...

by cyberjet123 on 2013-10-20Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

This was my first experience seeing Ian Anderson perform live. I was also unfamiliar with the music from the Thick as a Brick albums. I went because my son is a flutist and he wanted to see it. I have to say I came away a fan. Anderson has lost some of the punch that his voice had back in the day when JT was recording but he still knows how to put on a show. It was mostly a musical performance with a little theatre thrown in. It's clearly Anderson's forte. He has put together a terrific group of supporting musicians and the young Irish singer who shared the vocals was a nice compliment to Anderson. My only complaint has nothing to do with the performance, just with some members of the crowd. Why some feel the need to take pictures and videos is beyond me. It's really annoying to others. Also, if you're going to buy tickets for a show, then show up on time! It's rude to crawl through the rest of the crowd to your centre seats 20 minutes after the show starts. If I ran a theatre, no latecomers would be allowed to go to their seats until intermission.

3rd time experiencing "Tull" with mixed feelings.

by LCaroleF on 2013-10-20Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

I saw Jethro Tull many years ago at Maple Leaf Gardens. And again about 8 years ago at Tanglewood. I was excited to experience Thick As a Brick in Hamilton at this acoustically superior venue. Anderson is very theatrical, and works the stage the full length of the concert. Always fun to watch (although I could have done without the prostrate exam commercial). Band was very strong...I very much enjoyed them all..especially the excellent drum solo. HOWEVER, Ian's voice is not adequate to perform on stage anymore. Very disappointing. It was truly a relief when his vocalist (who was terrific) took over, as he usually did after the first few lines of each song. Nostalgia alone did not carry Ian Anderson's lack of ability to sing anymore.

    Indecipherable

by Sheilabbbbb on 2013-10-20Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

I had no idea what the lyrics were. The voices were drowned out by the music. I had no idea what the story was, and how they blended with the visuals. The Skype phone call was bizarre, and the pictures of the diver totally incomprehensible. I've been listening to Jethro Tull for many years, but I was disappointed here. The music all sounded the same, as did what the voices were trying to do. Anderson's "understudy" was equally incomprehensible, although I accept he was their to support Andersen's voice. I would not recommend this to anyone. Very disappointing.

    Ian Anderson rejuvenated!

by Zot123 on 2013-10-20Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

I have enjoyed Jethro Tull many MANY times in the past and thought Ian's voice and yes, his passion has seen their day. I was so WRONG! Thick As A Brick is a classic and TAAB 2 is better! Ian caught his second wind and created his 'Godfather TWO' He uses his voice for the critical points and now has a brilliant vocalist from Halifax accompany him both in voice and theatrics. What this allows Ian to excel in his guitar playing ands of course his signature flute. Never has he played or sounded better. A brilliant backup band and a younger inspired Ian makes this concert one of my musical highlights if the year. The perfect entertainer.

    Thick as a Brick

by OldHeadBanger on 2012-11-06Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

The original Thick as a Brick was well done. Ian Anderson has a young protege singing portions of the songs. The music portion was spot on, although it was obvious at his age, Ian Anderson has difficulty performing the vocals. At first it seemed like a rip-off, although the young singer was good and sounded like a young Ian Anderson. This combo was entertaining and allowed Ian Anderson to focus more on the instrumentals. The second half was more of a let down. You expect to hear new music at a concert as the artist wants to promote their newest release. I found it too long and would have appreciated some older songs incorporated into the second set. He knows how to rev up an audience and concludes with a strong performance of Locomotive Breath.

    Anderson Masterpiece

by Detroitjb on 2012-11-05Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Not enough words to describe the show. It's amazing how the talent from these musicians flows out to electrify the audience. Ian Anderson is without a doubt a very creative artist. He hasn't changed from when I saw him 40 years ago when the original TAAB tour was on (accept maybe the hair style ...lol). Well worth seeing. I would go again if I could.

    Ian Anderson was amazing!

by Ddan68 on 2012-11-05Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Wow! Incredible evening of music with impeccable moments and musicianship throughout. Ian and the band were flawless as the music of Thick As A Brick 1 and 2 were performed to perfection. The venue is one of the best theatres to see and hear a concert as you will ever find.

Ian is a true prog hero.

by DoctorProg on 2012-11-05Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Ian Anderson's Thick as a Brick 1 and 2 show was generally a very good musical experience. He is touring with none of the original Jethro Tull members (not even Martin Barre) but there is no shame in that. These musicians were clearly very skilled and demonstrated a thorough mastery of the complex melodies, and signature and tempo changes. The most ostensible disappointment of the show was Ian's voice. It was obvious within moments of the start of the concert that he simply does not have the vocal chops of his younger years. In fact, he required extensive assistance from a supporting vocalist who generally sounded like Ian but did not convey the attitude in his vocal style that is characteristic of Ian's singing. The sound and lightshow were excellent. Overall, I would recommend this show to a person who is a fan of prog rock. However, for fans of Jethro Tull, I might be more cautious in providing an endorsement of this concert.

The master continues to deliver the goods

by soulmoxie on 2010-10-20National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Always a pleasure to check in with one of the original masters of the "rock revolution". In spite of some difficulties with the higher vocal registers, particularly evident as the show opened, Ian has retained most of his capabilities in old age, and has toned down his stage demeanor very little. The phallic flute thrusts are still there! The show was divided into the two now-classic segments, with a 25-minute intermission: mainly acoustic, and mainly electric to close. A bonus was the spotlighting of his wunderkind guitarist Florian Opahle on two numbers not written by Mr. Anderson. Opahle can blend in quite well à la Martin Barre on the standard set list, but he can really shine on his own as well. A very enjoyable evening, which closed as almost always with Aqualung & Locomotive Breath (encore), though significantly reworked (thank god). It was funny to see so many senior citizens in the audience standing, whistling and screaming their appreciation like a bunch of teenagers, especially at the end.

    Ian Anderson was fantastic!

by tullgirl on 2010-10-19National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Saw Ian Anderson a couple days ago. This was the place to be Sunday, Oct 17th. His flute playing and music was amazing. Ian has a wonderful sense of humour. The band was completely supported by Ian and it showed in the choreography of the songs and music. I would go back to see him in a minute. It's two days later and I am still excited about the performance.
